As Christmas Day approaches, the familiar sight of the Salvation
Army’s red kettles has once again appeared outside of retail outlets all
over the United States. As Shoppers approach these stores to make
their holiday purchases, Christmas gifts and Christmas dinners, the
sound of ringing bells reminds them to share their blessings with the
poor by donating to the Salvation Army. Accompany each Kettle bell is a
representative of the Salvation Army: sometimes a hired worker and
sometimes a volunteer
donating his or her time. It is not uncommon to find an entire family
giving up its time and standing out in the cold to help the Salvation
Army raise money. Local churches often partner with the Salvation Army
to provide a force of volunteer labor. Perhaps your church has led you
to volunteer to serve the Salvation Army at Christmastime as an act of
Christian charity. If so, it should stop. The Salvation Army is outwardly and
purposefully disobedient to Jesus Christ. Many people are unaware that
the Salvation Army is not a secular charity (such as the United Way or Goodwill Industries) but an institutional church which
claims to be part of the body of Christ. Not only does it offer
charity to the poor but it offers membership in the body of Christ to
whomever would profess faith and agree to live by its “soldier’s covenant“.
The Salvation Army does not, however, offer the professing Christians
who join its ranks the opportunity to identify with Christ in baptism or
remember the sacrifice of Christ through the Lord’s supper. The
Salvation Army has issued the following statement in its handbook, which it defends on its website:
“Early in our history, The
Salvation Army was led of God not to observe specific sacraments, that
is baptism and the Lord’s Supper, or Holy Communion, as prescribed
rituals.”
Before he left this earth, Jesus Christ commanded his church to baptize all those who come to faith:
Go therefore and make disciples
of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son
and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you;
and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.
Jesus also instituted the Lord’s supper as a remembrance of his sacrifice for his church. As recorded in the gospel of Mark:
While they were eating, He took some bread, and after a blessing He broke it, and gave it to them, and said, “Take it; this is My body.” 23 And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. 24 And He said to them, “This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. 25 Truly
I say to you, I will never again drink of the fruit of the vine until
that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.” Mark 14:22-25
The Salvation Army, in direct disobedience of the Lord Jesus Christ,
leads its converts and members away from experiencing the fullness of
Christian life. Bible-believing Christians should not stand in
partnership with any “church” who so blatantly disregards the
instruction of the Lord. The various good works performed by the
Salvation Army do not make up for their aberrant doctrines (which are
not limited its stances of the Ordinances of the Church), rather they
obfuscate them. Christians who are thinking about partnering with the
Salvation Army should consider how their own churches could take local
action to alleviate material and spiritual poverty, serving the Lord
within the bounds of orthodoxy instead of in partnership with an
aberrant sect. It’s time for Christians to unring the red kettle bell
and stop partnering, in the form of volunteer labor, with the Salvation
Army.
Other erroneous Salvation Army practices include teaching that saints
can lose their salvation, the ordination of women to the pastorate, and
the permissiveness of aborting viable pregnancies in emotionally

Doctor: State health chief tried to conceal Flint data

Eden V. Wells, MD, MPH, FACPM, was appointed as the Chief Medical Executive for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services in May 2015, and serves Michigan citizens by providing professional medical leadership, expertise and coordination in addressing public health issues, workforce issues, and health policy development to the MDHHS. In September, 2016, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder appointed Dr. Wells to serve as a member of the Governor’s Cabinet in her role as Chief Medical Executive. Dr. Wells was formerly with the Bureau of Epidemiology, Michigan Department of Community Health, serving as a medical consultant to the Bureau and as a medical epidemiologist from 2004-2011. MDCH activities included investigation of, and response to, public health incidents and outbreaks, as well as preparedness planning for potential bioterrorism and pandemic influenza events.
Dr. Wells was also Clinical Associate Professor, Epidemiology, and the Director for the Preventive Medicine Residency at the University of Michigan School of Public Health, Ann Arbor, Michigan. Board-certified in both Internal Medicine and Preventive Medicine, her activities involved curriculum development, teaching, and applied public health practice training within the preventive medicine program; her research and practice activities included work in disaster epidemiology, and development and evaluation of surveillance for emerging infectious disease threats. She completed medical school at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, internal medicine training at Vanderbilt University Hospitals, and a preventive medicine residency at the University of Michigan School of Public Health.
Nick Lyon brings a wealth of policy, budget, and department operations expertise to his role as director of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS).
Lyon was named to the position effective April 10, 2015 by Gov. Rick Snyder when he created the new agency in February of 2015 by Executive Order. MDHHS is a merger of the former Michigan Departments of Human Services (DHS) and Community Health (MDCH).
Previously, Lyon had served as MDCH director beginning in September 2014, when Gov. Snyder selected him to succeed James K. Haveman. The governor also appointed Lyon as interim DHS director to succeed Maura Corrigan, who retired Dec. 31, 2014.
Prior to becoming MDCH director, Lyon served as the agency’s chief deputy director beginning in 2011. In this role, he upheld the mission of the MDCH by overseeing the day-to-day operations of all of the department’s administrations including Medical Services, which oversees the Michigan Medicaid program; Public Health; Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities; Policy and Planning; and Operations.
Lyon brings leadership experience overseeing daily departmental operations, as well as representing the department with various stakeholders, the Michigan legislature, and community partners to his role as Director. He also oversees the department’s interactions with the Office of Recipient Rights, the Michigan Developmental Disabilities Council, the Health and Human Service Office of Inspector General, the Autism Council, the State Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Board, and the Human Trafficking Health Advisory Board.
During his time at MDCH, Lyon has been involved in a number of key health initiatives including the successful implementation and management of the Healthy Michigan Plan, as well as the advancement of Health Information Technology in the state of Michigan.
Previously, Lyon served as Deputy Director of the MDCH Operations Administration as well as the Deputy Director of the MDCH Health Policy and Regulation Administration. Prior to joining the MDCH, Nick served as the Director of the Office of Budget Development and General Government within the State Budget Office and as the Finance Officer for the Department of Attorney General. Through his previous experience, Lyon has a distinguished track record of success overseeing and crafting health policy and operations, finance and human resource, and budget development.
Lyon is a 1990 graduate of Yale University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Political Science.
Nancy Vreibel is chief deputy director for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
Vreibel has 40 years of experience in state government. She is a former budget division director for the Michigan Department of Community Health and served as director of appropriations for the chairpersons of the Michigan Senate Appropriations Committee between 2007 and 2016.
Prior to that, she held a variety of positions in the State House, including chief budget analyst and House Republican Majority policy director.
Vreibel has a bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University’s School of Social Science, with majors in political science, social science and economics.

LANSING, Mich. —Lawmakers in Michigan have passed a package of bills
that authorize emergency workers to install baby boxes at fire stations
and other locations in an effort to save newborns that might otherwise
be abandoned in dumpsters or killed by their mothers.
“The purpose is so that children are not dumped in dumpsters or
places where young parents are just scared [and] don’t know what else to
do,” Oshtemo Township Fire Department Chief Mark Barnes told WOOD-TV. “We want to give them a safe place to turn to.” The bills work in concert with the state’s Safe Delivery of Newborns Law,
which states that women may surrender their newborns at a hospital,
fire station or police station without penalty within 72 hours of the
child’s birth.
The newly-passed legislation now extends the time that mothers may
leave their baby at safe haven locations to 30 days, and allows the
installment of baby boxes at the sites.
As previously reported, the boxes are similar to incubators in that
they are padded, heated enclosures, but also feature a device that
notifies workers whenever a baby is placed inside. Emergency personnel
are to remove the baby from the box within five minutes of the
notification, and the child is then cared for and placed into the hands
of Child Protective Services.
Monica Kelsey of the organization Safe Haven Baby Boxes
believes the boxes are beneficial because mothers who give up their
newborn often don’t want their face to be seen, and sometimes they might
leave the baby and run without anyone knowing the child is there. With
the baby box law, emergency medical service (EMS) workers are notified
immediately and arrive within minutes.
“Our research found that some women want complete anonymity and are
dropping off their newborns at the doors of fire stations and hospitals
without doing the face to face interaction,” the Safe Haven Baby Boxes
website outlines. “In one situation, a newborn baby boy was placed at
the entrance of a hospital in a cardboard box, and when the child was
finally found, the child had frozen to death and was deceased.”
The cause is near and dear to Kelsey as she herself was abandoned as a
baby, and now serves as a firefighter. Her mother, who was 17 and had
been raped, had initially sought an abortion, but could not bring
herself to end her child’s life. She instead decided to leave the baby
at a local hospital, and Kelsey was soon adopted into a loving family.
“I just praise God that my birth mother was strong enough to walk out of the abortion clinic,” Kelsey told reporters in 2013.
As previously reported, earlier this year, the Coolspring Township Volunteer Fire Department
in Indiana received an alert that an infant had been left in its safe
haven box, and firefighters arrived within minutes to find a baby girl
inside, umbilical cord still attached.
“We don’t know the situation, but to be strong enough to make this
choice is wonderful. They had to choose something very hard and they
chose right,” Lt. Chuck Kohler told reporters.
A baby was also left at the fire station in 2017, and was named baby
Hope by those who arrived on the scene. She was placed with a family one
month later and was soon adopted.
According to Safe Haven Baby Boxes, 3,543 babies were surrendered in
baby boxes nationwide in 2017. Over 200 babies have been safely left at
Michigan hospitals and other locations since 2001 through its Safe
Delivery of Newborns Law.

In a video released on Sunday, Roman Catholic bishop Robert Barron of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles told popular conservative commentator Ben Shapiro, who identifies with Orthodox Judaism, that those “outside of the explicit Christian faith can be saved” by following their conscience, or in Shapiro’s case, “following the commandments of the Law sincerely.” He pointed to the teachings of the Second Vatican Council as his basis.
“I feel like I lead a pretty good life, a very religiously-based life, in which I try to keep not just the 10 Commandments, but a solid 603 other commandments as well. And I spend an awful lot of my time promulgating what I would consider Judeo-Christian virtues, particularly in western societies,” Shapiro told Barron during a “Sunday Special” episode.
“So, what’s the Catholic view of me? Am I basically [in trouble] here?” he asked.
“No,” Barron replied, stating that while “Christ is the privileged route” as per John 3:16, the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) “clearly teaches that someone outside of the explicit Christian faith can be saved.”
“[T]hey’re saved through the grace of Christ indirectly received,” he stated. “So, I mean, the grace is coming from Christ, but it might be received according to your conscience—if you’re following your conscience sincerely, or in your case, you’re following the commandments of the Law sincerely.”
The Lumen Gentium of 1964 as published by the Vatican reads, “Those also can attain to salvation who through no fault of their own do not know the Gospel of Christ or His Church, yet sincerely seek God and moved by grace strive by their deeds to do His will as it is known to them through the dictates of conscience. Nor does Divine Providence deny the helps necessary for salvation to those who, without blame on their part, have not yet arrived at an explicit knowledge of God and with His grace strive to live a good life.”
“Yeah, you can be saved,” Barron again affirmed, stating that even atheists “of good will” can go to Heaven.
“John Henry Newman said that the conscience is the aboriginal vicar of Christ in the soul. It’s a very interesting characterization, that it is, in fact, the voice of Christ—if He’s the logos made flesh, He’s the divine mind or reason made flesh—that when I follow my conscience, I’m following Him, whether I know it explicitly or not,” he explained.
Shapiro then asked Barron if Roman Catholicism is “act-based or faith-based,” noting that Judaism is “all about what you do in this life and that earns you points in Heaven,” while Christianity is about believing in “the Way, the Truth and the Life.”
“I would say that it’s love-based. God is love. God so loved the world that He sent His only Son. We’re being drawn into the divine love,” Barron responded. “Now, do we have to accept that love as an act of faith? Of course. So, God makes this great offer in Christ. Is it accepted in faith? Yeah. Aquinas said faith is the door of the spiritual life; without faith you can’t get into the spiritual life. That means a trust in the divine love.”
He said that men are to be fully engaged in response to the love, which begins with grace.
“God invites us now to respond body and soul—everything we’ve got—in love to the love that He’s offered us,” Barron stated. “So, I’d put it that way. It’s grace, and then cooperation with grace, which manifests itself in a life of love.”
Barron continued by presenting the questions “What gets me to Heaven?” and “What is Heaven?” He answered his question by stating that Heaven is love.
“Paul says that three things that last: faith, hope, and love, but the greatest of these is love. Because in Heaven, faith fades away. I don’t need faith anymore; I’m seeing. In Heaven, hope fades away. Who needs to hope? You’ve got it. But love endures, because love is what Heaven is,” he said. “What are you going to do all day in Heaven? That’s what Heaven is, is the act of love.”

Mike Gendron of Proclaiming the Gospel Ministries, a former longtime Roman Catholic, lamented Barron’s response to Shapiro’s question about salvation.
“This Catholic bishop is deceiving people,” he told Christian News Network on Wednesday. “It’s tragic that people like him are in a place of authority in the Catholic Church and they are misleading Roman Catholics about life’s most important issue, and that is, ‘What must I do to be saved?’”
“[I]n Galatians 3, we read that anyone attempts to be saved by following the Law places himself under a curse because no one can obey the Law perfectly,” he said. “In fact, in James 2:10, it says that if you obey the whole Law and yet stumble at one part, you are guilty of breaking the entire Law.”
Gendron noted that the Bible is also clear in regard to atheism, as he pointed to 2 Thessalonians 1:8-9, which says that those who “know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ … shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord.”
When asked what Barron should have told Shapiro, Gendron explained that the Bible teaches that God demands perfection for entrance into Heaven, but all have sinned, or violated the Law of God. Christ’s substitutionary death for sinners is the only means by which men can be forgiven of their transgressions and saved from the wrath of God.
“In 2 Corinthians 5:21 we read, that Jesus, who knew no sin, became sin for us so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him,” Gendron outlined. “He (Barron) should have told Ben that the only way anyone can enter Heaven is to have their sins completely forgiven through the substitutionary death of Christ, and the only way into Heaven is through the righteousness of Christ because God’s righteousness demands perfect righteousness to enter into Heaven.”
“But not once did he mention that,” Gendron sorrowed. “It was all about this nebulous ‘love.’ He mentioned that God is love, but He never once said that God is holy and righteous and just, and that He must punish sin. … [His words] leave the listener woefully deceived that his sins can be forgiven by following his conscience and believing that God is love.”
He said that the words of every man should be tested against the Scriptures, and that includes those who listened to the interview with Barron.
“God has given us one infallible source for absolute truth, and that is His inspired, authoritative Word. We are to use His Word to test every man’s teaching,” Gendron outlined. “And that’s the principle given in Acts 17:11 when the apostle Paul was preaching in the synagogues in Berea. And as he was preaching, he noticed that the listeners were testing his teaching by studying the Scriptures daily.”
“And that’s my exhortation for all Roman Catholics,” he said. “Don’t believe any religious teaching unless it conforms to the authority of God’s Word.”
“Jesus Christ said, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.’ He is the way for those who are lost. He is the truth for those who are deceived. And He is the life for those who are dead in their sin,” Gendron declared. “If anyone wants to be saved, they must look to Christ, and trust Him alone for their salvation.”
