NEW YORK — Fearing potential ramifications of the retirement of Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, liberal New York governor Andrew Cuomo signed an executive order on Monday ensuring that contraceptives are free under all insurance plans in the state. He also decried in speeches what he called “extreme conservative” politicians, describing them as those who “have their views about what religion is right and wrong, what lifestyle is right and wrong, what sexuality is right and wrong,” and impose on the people by law “their view of what God says should be done.”
“Whereas, with the retirement of Justice Anthony Kennedy from the United States Supreme Court and the growth of attacks by the federal government on access to comprehensive reproductive health, it is more critical than ever to protect access to reproductive rights,” the order reads.
It suggests that the State will defy any federal acts it opposes surrounding the issue, and will codify provisions within its own laws.
“New York is committed to not only protecting, but expanding full, affordable, and timely access to contraceptives, including emergency contraceptives, regardless of federal actions,” the order outlines.
According to a press release from Cuomo’s office, the executive order will ensure that there are no co-pays for contraceptive drugs and devices, and that one year’s worth of contraceptives are dispensed at a time.
“In the face of this federal assault, New York is going to protect itself because this state has always been the progressive capital of the nation,” Cuomo remarked in a statement. “This is the time where every New Yorker has to say, you’re not taking women’s … reproductive rights away. We’re going to protect ourselves because this is the state that has always stood up for what’s right.”
The governor signed the order after delivering a speech at the Manny Cantor Center, in which he lamented that overturning Roe v. Wade is on the conservative agenda. He spoke to crowds both Monday and Tuesday, decrying what he called “extreme conservatives” in the government.
“This is their view of the world. This is their view of religion. This is their view of what God says should be done. And their view of what God says should be done is the view they’re going to impose on you by law,” he stated prior to signing the order.
“What a great act of hypocrisy … Conservatives always argued limited government; states’ rights. Pull pack the federal government …. until they took control of the federal government,” Cuomo asserted. “Then, the federal government is omniscient and omnipresent, (and) the federal government should dictate the law of the land to everyone. Not in New York state.”
“They have their views and they’re going to impose their views on you,” he similarly said on Tuesday. “They have their views about what religion is right and wrong, what lifestyle is right and wrong, what sexuality is right and wrong, who should be an immigrant and who’s right and who’s wrong. They have their views, and in a great act of hypocrisy, they are going to use the federal government to impose those views on you.”
He told those gathered that elections matter, as they affect the “fundamental values of who we are and what we believe and how we live.” Cuomo also remarked that the actions of those in power are a “daily shock to our system … because it is totally repugnant to everything we are and what we believe,” and called upon those gathered to push back and rebel.
“New York has to pass a law that codifies Roe v. Wade before they overrule it,” Cuomo stated, opining that the world has become a “crazier place” in that it is now possible that the 1973 ruling could be overturned.
He called upon Republicans in the New York legislature to join Democrats in passing the Reproductive Health Act, which would codify Roe into state law.
“Come back and pass Roe v. Wade for New York. There are no excuses,” Cuomo stated. “And if you do not come back and vote, that is your answer. You are telling the women and men of this state you are anti-choice. … No one gets a pass. There is no amnesty. You are either with us, or you’re against us. And in the words of President Trump, if you are against a woman’s right to choose, ‘you’re fired!'”
As previously reported, while many argue that abortion is the right of a mother to do what she wants with “her body”—or the child in her womb—Scripture teaches that men and women are to glorify God with their bodies, and no longer live in autonomy unto themselves, but to give their all to Him.
2 Corinthians 5:15 reads, “He died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto Him which died for them and rose again.”
1 Corinthians 6:20 also states, “For ye are bought with a price: therefore, glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”
Romans 6:13 and 19 instruct, “Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. … [F]or as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity, even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.”
1 Thessalonians 4 3:-8 likewise teaches, “For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication—that every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honor, not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God. … For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness. He therefore that despiseth, despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us His Holy Spirit.”
