The British government has posted on an official website a citizens’ petition calling to ban Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump from entering the United Kingdom.
After completing a review by the government and going live Tuesday, the petition quickly surpassed the 10,000-signature threshold, which means Prime Minister David Cameron’s government will be required to issue a response.
And now, with more than 200,000 signatures, it has surpassed the 100,000 mark, which requires the full Parliament to officially consider the idea.
Noting that the U.K. “has banned entry to many individuals for hate speech,” the petition argues the “same principles should apply to everyone who wishes to enter the U.K.”
“If the United Kingdom is to continue applying the ‘unacceptable behaviour’ criteria to those who wish to enter its borders, it must be fairly applied to the rich as well as poor, and the weak as well as powerful,” the petition states.
In 2009, popular nationally syndicated talk-radio host Michael Savage was banned from entering the U.K. by Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s government, which lumped him together with Muslim jihadists and leaders of racist groups for “seeking to provoke others to serious criminal acts and fostering hatred,” as WND reported.
The British government, however, has never specified what Savage has said that might threaten the nation’s security.
Savage favors Trump, a frequent guest on his “Savage Nation” show, for the Republican presidential nomination.
‘Trumpless Britannia’
The campaign for a “Trumpless Britannia” is led by American-born Irish citizen Suzanne Kelly, who said Trump’s proposal to ban Muslims from entering the United States until security issues can be sorted out will bolster the petition, reported the news website Mic.com.
“After [that] particularly hateful speech, I think it’s going to have an awful lot of backing,” she said.
“These are very inflammatory times that we’re living in,” Kelly continued. “The last thing that we need is somebody pouring fuel on a fire. What we need is more tolerance and more cultural understanding.”
Mic.com also cited Trump’s concern about the large number of rapists and drug dealers among illegal aliens and his call for increased surveillance of mosques, potentially requiring Muslim Americans to register with official government databases.
“People jump on board [for] celebrities they see on television,” Kelly said of Trump’s popularity.
“I do think he could win; this frightens me greatly.”
As WND reported in May 2009, then-British Home Secretary Jacqui Smith announced that Savage was on a list of 16 people banned from entry because the government believed their views might provoke violence.
Smith said it was “important that people understand the sorts of values and sorts of standards that we have here, the fact that it’s a privilege to come and the sort of things that mean you won’t be welcome in this country.”
A year later, Cameron’s new government informed Savage it would continue the ban unless he repudiated statements made on his broadcasts that were deemed a threat to public security.
Again, the government didn’t cite any statements.
