(Friday Church News Notes, March 6, 2015, www.wayoflife.orgfbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - The following is excerpted from “Flower Power,” Todd Starnes, Fox News, Feb. 23, 2015: “Barronelle Stutzman, a Washington State florist who declined to provide flowers for a gay wedding, has rejected a deal by the attorney general’s office that would’ve forced her to betray her religious beliefs--much like Judas betrayed Jesus. “You are asking me to walk in the way of a well-known betrayer, one who sold something of infinite worth for 30 pieces of silver,” Stutzman wrote in a letter to state Attorney General Bob Ferguson. ‘That is something I will not do.’ Ferguson had offered to settle the case if she paid a $2,000 penalty for violating the Consumer Protection Act, a $1 payment for costs and fees, and agreed not to discriminate in the future. ‘My primary goal has always been to bring about an end to the defendant’s unlawful conduct and to make clear that I will not tolerate discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation,’ Ferguson said in a prepared statement. On Feb. 18 a judge ruled Stutzman had violated the law by refusing to provide flowers for the same-sex wedding of a longtime customer. The state had not only gone after the flower shop but also Stutzman personally. Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), the religious liberty law firm representing Stutzman, said legal bills could be as high as seven figures. ‘He’s using the full power of his office to personally and professionally destroy her,’ ADF attorney Kristen Waggoner told me. But the 70-year-old Southern Baptist grandmother said she will not violate her religious beliefs--no matter what. If that means losing her house – so be it. ‘I certainly don’t relish the idea of losing my business, my homes and everything else that your lawsuit threatens to take from my family, but my freedom to honor God in doing what I do best is more important,’ Stutzman wrote in a letter to the attorney general. She said the attorney general simply does not understand her or what the conflict is all about. ‘It’s about freedom, not money,’ she said. ‘You chose to attack my faith and pursue this not simply as a matter of law, but to threaten my very means of working, eating and having a home.’”

STATEMENT OF ATTORNEY GENERAL BOB FERGUSON CONCERNING

ARLENE’S FLOWERS SAME-SEX MARRIAGE DISCRIMINATION CASE:

republished below in full unedited:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Feb 19 2015
Statement of Attorney General Bob Ferguson concerning Arlene’s Flowers same-sex marriage discrimination case
OLYMPIA — In light of yesterday’s Benton County Superior Court ruling that a Richland florist violated Washington’s Consumer Protection Act by refusing to serve a same-sex couple seeking to buy wedding flowers in 2013, Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson today released the following statement:
“My primary goal has always been to bring about an end to the Defendants’ unlawful conduct and to make clear that I will not tolerate discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation,” said Ferguson.
“Before this case began, my office wrote to Ms. Stutzman, asking her to comply with state law.  Had she agreed to no longer discriminate, my office would not have filed suit, and Ms. Stutzman would not have paid any costs, fees or penalties.
“After lengthy proceedings, the court has ruled, the law is clear, and the state prevailed on all counts.
“Today, I am prepared to settle this matter for a penalty of $2,000 under the Consumer Protection Act, a $1 payment for costs and fees, an agreement not to discriminate in the future, and an end to further litigation.
“I have asked my legal team to craft and present a formal settlement offer to the defendants including these elements.”

QUOTE:
Welcome to the Attorney General's Office Diversity Web site. We are proud of our efforts to promote diversity/inclusion and hope this information is helpful to you.
In a nutshell, honoring diversity means that as an agency, we strive to ensure that all employees enjoy a respectful working environment.  More specifically, our Diversity/Inclusion policy (AGO Policy 1.08) defines our responsibility to recognize, respect, and appreciate all cultures and backgrounds-- and to foster the inclusion of differences between people.
These differences include age, race, creed, color, sex, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, marital status, disability or veteran’s status and all other differences, including differences in philosophy.  Our policy sets the bar higher than “tolerance.”  It calls for the “acceptance” of such differences, by all staff, in all settings, all of the time.
With this in mind, the Attorney General's Office has:
  • Created a Diversity Advisory Committee to promote diversity and inclusion within the AGO by serving as a resource to management and others on diversity issues, providing assistance on recruitment and retention efforts and providing education, training and programs to promote awareness;
  • Planned and publicized regular diversity programs in our offices across the state; and
  • Conducted outreach to diverse communities to improve recruiting and retention.

ALLIANCE DEFENDING FREEDOM:

Kristen Waggoner, ADF Attorney; Quote from:

“President Obama’s overreaching executive order is the latest example illustrating that the very government that the Constitution charges with protecting religious freedom is now the primary threat to religious freedom. The administration has brazenly bypassed Congress and declared that the only religious non-profit organizations it will do business with are those willing to line up with the administration’s doctrine and theology on sexual behavior. That’s the kind of government entanglement with religion that the Founders sought to prevent and that the First Amendment prohibits.”

Kristen K. Waggoner, Esq., serves as senior vice president of legal services with Alliance Defending Freedom, leading the organization’s litigation, legal advocacy and attorney training efforts. Waggoner joined Alliance Defending Freedom in 2013 to support the more than 2,400 allied attorneys in their efforts to preserve religious freedom. She has trained allied attorneys and organizations on religious liberty issues and rights of conscience. She has also provided allies with legal support on cases pertaining to life, marriage, and family. Waggoner was previously an accomplished attorney at Ellis, Li & McKinstry, where she was promoted to partner. She participated as counsel and prevailed in several high-profile constitutional cases, including Andersen v. King County (same-sex marriage), Stormans v. Selecky (pharmacist conscience rights), and State v. Hamlin (clergy-penitent privilege). Waggoner served as outside general counsel to private schools and universities, churches, and other non-profit organizations. She has also defended individuals in a variety of areas, including breach of contract, negligence, wrongful termination, statutory claims, and family disputes. Waggoner is a Martindale-Hubbell AV© peer-review rated attorney. She earned her J.D. from Regent University School of Law, graduating cum laude. Waggoner is admitted to practice in Washington, Oregon, and Florida, the U.S. Supreme Court, and many federal courts.

EXCERPT:
"BREAKING NEWS:
A Washington court has ruled against Barronelle Stutzman, the lovable grandmother and long-time florist, for acting consistent with her Christian faith. Barronelle referred a longstanding customer to nearby florists because she could not in good conscience create custom arrangements and provide wedding support for his same-sex wedding. This ruling prevents Barronelle's case from going to trial and makes her personally responsible for paying any damages and attorney's fees incurred by the same-sex couple and the State of Washington. Everything she's worked to build, including her home, her family business, and her life savings are now at risk. Alliance Defending Freedom attorneys will appeal."

Stutzman wrote in her letter to Ferguson. “I never imagined that using my God-given talents and abilities, and doing what I love to do for over three decades, would become illegal.
“It’s about freedom, not money. I certainly don’t relish the idea of losing my business, my home, and everything else that your lawsuit threatens to take from my family, but my freedom to honor God in doing what I do best is more important…. You chose to attack my faith and pursue this not simply as a matter of law, but to threaten my very means of working, eating, and having a home. If you are serious about clarifying the law, then I urge you to drop your claims against my home, business, and other assets….”
