(Friday Church News Notes, March 6, 2015, www.wayoflife.orgfbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - The following is excerpted from “Flower Power,” Todd Starnes, Fox News, Feb. 23, 2015: “Barronelle Stutzman, a Washington State florist who declined to provide flowers for a gay wedding, has rejected a deal by the attorney general’s office that would’ve forced her to betray her religious beliefs--much like Judas betrayed Jesus. “You are asking me to walk in the way of a well-known betrayer, one who sold something of infinite worth for 30 pieces of silver,” Stutzman wrote in a letter to state Attorney General Bob Ferguson. ‘That is something I will not do.’ Ferguson had offered to settle the case if she paid a $2,000 penalty for violating the Consumer Protection Act, a $1 payment for costs and fees, and agreed not to discriminate in the future. ‘My primary goal has always been to bring about an end to the defendant’s unlawful conduct and to make clear that I will not tolerate discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation,’ Ferguson said in a prepared statement. On Feb. 18 a judge ruled Stutzman had violated the law by refusing to provide flowers for the same-sex wedding of a longtime customer. The state had not only gone after the flower shop but also Stutzman personally. Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), the religious liberty law firm representing Stutzman, said legal bills could be as high as seven figures. ‘He’s using the full power of his office to personally and professionally destroy her,’ ADF attorney Kristen Waggoner told me. But the 70-year-old Southern Baptist grandmother said she will not violate her religious beliefs--no matter what. If that means losing her house – so be it. ‘I certainly don’t relish the idea of losing my business, my homes and everything else that your lawsuit threatens to take from my family, but my freedom to honor God in doing what I do best is more important,’ Stutzman wrote in a letter to the attorney general. She said the attorney general simply does not understand her or what the conflict is all about. ‘It’s about freedom, not money,’ she said. ‘You chose to attack my faith and pursue this not simply as a matter of law, but to threaten my very means of working, eating and having a home.’”

Statement of Attorney General Bob Ferguson concerning Arlene’s Flowers same-sex marriage discrimination case

OLYMPIA — In light of yesterday’s Benton County Superior Court ruling that a Richland florist violated Washington’s Consumer Protection Act by refusing to serve a same-sex couple seeking to buy wedding flowers in 2013, Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson today released the following statement:

“My primary goal has always been to bring about an end to the Defendants’ unlawful conduct and to make clear that I will not tolerate discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation,” said Ferguson. 

“Before this case began, my office wrote to Ms. Stutzman, asking her to comply with state law.  Had she agreed to no longer discriminate, my office would not have filed suit, and Ms. Stutzman would not have paid any costs, fees or penalties. 

“After lengthy proceedings, the court has ruled, the law is clear, and the state prevailed on all counts.

“Today, I am prepared to settle this matter for a penalty of $2,000 under the Consumer Protection Act, a $1 payment for costs and fees, an agreement not to discriminate in the future, and an end to further litigation.

“I have asked my legal team to craft and present a formal settlement offer to the defendants including these elements.”

Talk of unilateral executive action for raising taxes ensued after Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) asked Obama to raise over $100 billion in taxes through IRS executive action by eliminating corporate tax breaks.

"Back in 2012 I stated that a reelection of President Obama would be the greatest Pavlovian experiment the world has ever known. In other words this great nation would be rewarding bad behavior and failure and would therefore receive more of same.

And so it was — but it was truly manifested the day after the midterm elections last year when we were told the referendum of the people meant nothing to President Obama because he hears the voices of the two-thirds of Americans who did not vote. Not long after that, President Obama decided to do that which he had stated he could not — issue an executive order suspending actions against illegal immigration.

Now there are rumblings that President Obama is feeling his oats and has set his sights on yet another tyrannical use of executive action.

As reported by Forbes.com, “In another sign that the gloves have come off for the last 2 years of his term, President Obama suggests he can raise taxes by executive action. That’s the same method he used for his controversial immigration ‘reform.’ The Congressional Budget Office says Mr. Obama’s executive immigration action will increase federal deficits by $8.8 billion over the next ten years. Now, we may see unilateral tax hikes too. The tax gauntlet was tossed down by his White House Press Secretary, Josh Earnest, who said the President was “very interested” in raising taxes through executive action. Some of the blame goes to Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), who called upon the President to raise over $100 billion in taxes through IRS executive action. Sen. Sanders dispatched this letter to Mr. Obama’s Treasury Secretary identifying actions the IRS can take without asking Congress.”

Ok, let me explain. In the Constitution (like who reads THAT anymore), the Origination Clause, Article 1, Section 7, Clause 1, states “All Bills for raising Revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives; but the Senate may propose or concur with Amendments as on other Bills.”

Here we go again with the executive usurpation of Congressional enumerated power. Congress has rolled over on unconstitutional release of GITMO detainees (violation of Article I, Section 8, Clause 11) and executive action on illegal immigration (violation of Article I, Section 8, Clause 4).

But you have to give it to President Obama, because he feels no one will stand in his way — you saw the treatment given to Prime Minister Netanyahu and we know Obama has dispatched campaign operatives to defeat Netanyahu in his reelection. So where does this end? Obama is shrewd enough not to use another violation of our Constitution to raise taxes on the individual Americans — nope, he’s going after corporate taxation.

“Sen. Sanders wants the President to fix “check the box” rules that allow multinational corporations to shield profits from taxation. He also wants to end the tax break for carried interests. But as long as executive action may expand to tax, it is worth asking what else from President Obama’s budget might be considered. For example, of the many tax proposals in his budget, the President wants to increase taxes on retirement savings. ”"

The Obama administration released a plan to expand federal control over state and local law enforcement.

The plan released Monday, entitled Task Force on 21st Century Policing, advocates the federalization of police agencies across the country by forcing them to adhere to stricter requirements when they receive federal funding.

“The U.S. Department of Justice, through the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services [COPS] and Office of Justice Programs, should provide technical assistance and incentive funding to jurisdictions with small police agencies that take steps towards shared services, regional training, and consolidation,” one of the numerous recommendations in the plan stated.

The plan also calls for the feds to collect more law enforcement data.

“…There is a lack of uniformity in data collection throughout law enforcement, and only patchwork methods of near real-time information sharing exist,” the plan stated in a section advocating “national standards” for law enforcement technologies. “These problems are especially critical in light of the threats from terrorism and cybercrime.”

President Obama said that most of the plan’s recommendations “are directed at the 18,000 law enforcement jurisdictions that are out there.”

“I’m going to be asking Eric Holder and the Justice Department and his successor to go through all these recommendations so that we can start implementing them,” he said Monday. “I know that one area that’s going to be of great interest is whether we can expand the COPS program that in the past has been very effective, continues to be effective, but is largely underfunded — to see if we can get more incentives for local communities to apply some of the best practices and lessons that are embodied in this report.”

“But a lot of our work is going to involve local police chiefs, local elected officials, states recognizing that the moment is now for us to make these changes.”

The plan follows the same strategy laid out by Common Core: expand federal power on the state and local level by adding more conditions to federal funding.

"The White House said those are the types of concerns that could be addressed by Obama's newly created Task Force on 21st Century Policing, which will include law enforcement and community leaders. The White House review shows the wide scope of the programs — $18 billion in the past five years from five federal agencies, including the departments of Defense, Justice, Homeland Security and Treasury, plus the Office of National Drug Control Policy.
