The Lee County, Virginia, school board has unanimously approved a proposal that would pay for the arming and training of school teachers in the county.
"The only way to fight a gun if somebody comes through these doors with a gun to shoot our students, is with another gun," says Michael Kidwell, Lee County School Board chairman.
The vote, which took place Thursday night, makes Lee the first of the Old Dominion’s 95 counties to pursue this path toward protecting its students from armed violence.
According to reports in the local media, teachers will begin receiving their weapons and their training in their use as early as this fall.
The measure met with the approval of the public, as well, according to WJHL TV in Johnson City, Tennessee, a town on the border of Tennessee and Virginia.
"At least it gives us a chance. If we sat there and did nothing, I couldn't sleep at night. At least we're trying to do something," says school board member Rob Hines, the TV news station reports.
There are some in the school district who worry that an increase in the number of weapons will result in an increase in the number of gun-related incidents.
For their part, the school board responds that arming teachers is a fiscally sound plan, cheaper than alternatives such as on-campus resource officers or metal detectors.
Not surprisingly, several teachers have stepped forward, volunteering to be the first to carry a gun at school.
Here’s the story from WJHL:
Many Lee County teachers have already volunteered to be considered for the role of being armed at their school. One former teacher tells News Channel 11 that most teachers would be willing to go face-to-face with a gunman if it meant saving one of their students.
"Sooner or later, it could happen. And like some of the board members said tonight, we need to be prepared if it does," says Ronald Earley, former Lee County schools teacher and principal.
While there is, as indicated above, widespread support for training and arming teachers, the solution is statist, at the end of the day.
Why must the answer to the tragedy of school shootings be planned and executed by government? Why can’t the people, exercising their natural right of self-defense, choose to carry or not to carry arms? Why must government insinuate itself into every problem, promoting itself as the source of all solutions?
This is the precise point made by Tom Mullen writing for Foundation for Economic Education (FEE):
The conservative answer to liberal prohibition (oxymoron?) is to “arm and train the teachers.” While no one has come out and suggested mandating teachers carry firearms or be trained in using them, every suggestion seems to suggest “we” (i.e., the government) need to do the arming and training.
Here’s a little newsflash for both sides: the teachers are already armed.
It’s not a matter of arming teachers, but rather to cease disarming them when they report to work.
No, not every teacher carries firearms and perhaps not as high a percentage of teachers do so as the percentage of the general population that carries. But there are over three million teachers in public schools and some percentage of them have concealed carry permits. It would be unlikely that there aren’t at least some members of every faculty in America that have a concealed carry permit.
And there we have it. As “conservatives” and certainly as constitutionalists, we believe the answer to all of society’s ills — economic and social — lies in the power of the people to act in ways conducive to their own safety and their own liberty.
Arming teachers is better than nothing, but removing government from the equation is the only constitutional and free-market solution.

New Jersey – -(Ammoland.com)- July 11, 2018. ANJRPC’s federal lawsuit to overturn Governor Murphy’s firearms magazine ban is starting to pick up speed. There has been a flurry of activity since the court scheduled an expedited hearing on Association of New Jersey Rifle and Pistol Clubs’s request for an injunction (to halt enforcement of the ban until the case is decided).
The State of New Jersey was first to oppose the injunction motion, arguing among other things that the newly banned magazines are “dangerous and unusual weapons” not protected by the Second Amendment, which pose a danger to the public even in the hands of law-abiding citizens. The State also argues that the banned magazines are not needed for self-defense, but are “perfectly suited for illicit use.”
“Claiming that banned magazines are not needed for self-defense while simultaneously exempting their use for the protection of lawmakers is outrageous and the height of hypocrisy,” said ANJRPC Executive Director Scott Bach. “This elitist double standard is irrational, indefensible, and shows the utter contempt New Jersey has for its ‘subjects,’” said Bach.
Piling onto the State’s papers, the Giffords Law Center and Everytown For Gun Safety filed their own opposition to the injunction motion, arguing among other things that standard capacity magazines are best suited for military use, that NJ’s prior regulation of magazine capacity for several decades makes the new ban presumptively valid, and that the ban will make mass shooting incidents “less lethal.”
On July 9, Association of New Jersey Rifle and Pistol Clubs ripped all of these arguments to shreds in a reply brief filed in the case.

This case was filed in cooperation with the National Rifle Association. “We thank the NRA for its incredible support and guidance, which made this aggressive lawsuit challenging the magazine ban possible,” said Bach.

The “Wild Goose Festival” is a four-day extravaganza of music, interactive story-telling, “reconciliation yoga,’” and “progressive Christian mysticism.” In other words, is a big, gay, fake-Christian Woodstock.
Taking place July 12-15, the Wild Goose festival boasts a whole gaggle of evangelical and gay-affirming speakers that include Jen Hatmaker, Tony Campolo, Frank Schaeffer, Shane Claiborne, and Brian McLaren. It is being held in Hot Springs, North Carolina as reported by Juicey Ecumenism, The Institute of Religion and Democracy blog.
According to their press release dated July 12, 2018:
This year’s “Wild Goose” festival will feature Jen Hatmaker, an Evangelical author who liberalized her views on same-sex marriage, self-described “Christian-Atheist” Frank Schaeffer, “progressive Christian mystic” and United Methodist pastor Roger Wolsey, among other “spiritually non-traditional” speakers. Breakout sessions will highlight “Queerology,” “Reproductive Justice is…,” and “A Practical Guide to Getting Elected.”“Wild Goose” is loosely patterned on Great Britain’s Greenbelt festival, Burning Man, Lightning in a Bottle, and SXSW.
IRD Evangelical Program Director Chelsen Vicari commented:
Wild Goose is a bizarre attempt to refashion Christianity for disgruntled Progressive Christians attracted to postmodern sexual relativism, mysticism, and New Age. [It] pushes against the boundaries of orthodox Christianity by experimenting with mysticism and vague spirituality. Sadly, some disillusioned young Evangelicals find this distorted version of Christianity alluring.
She continued:
Of all the progressive Christian events I’ve monitored on behalf of the Institute on Religion and Democracy, Wild Goose is the most troubling in my view. But the truth is no matter how modern the meditation practices or interactive the story-telling, progressive Christianity remains unfashionable as its leading denominations continue in decline.

This genuinely prejudiced view – that Trump could provoke the uncouth underbelly of British society to acts of hatred or violence – is now widespread online.Everything about this dash to brand Trump an Islamophobe for criticising the London mayor is worrying. It confirms that the chattering-class concern with Islamophobia is not about protecting Muslims from genuine discrimination or violence (both of these things are already illegal), but rather is about ringfencing Islam and all Muslims from criticism, surrounding this one religion with a blasphemy-deflecting forcefield. So any commentary on Islam or even on influential Muslims can be casually batted aside as ‘phobic’. Even worse, today’s spat shows that now political debate, never mind differences on religion, can be demonised with the Islamophobia brand. Is it Islamophobic to criticise Sadiq? Must we all hold our tongue because he is of Asian and Muslim origin? Isn’t that, erm, a little racist – treating a brown-skinned politician more gently and cautiously than you would a white one?And this is worrying because of what it tells us about the Corbyn-led Labour Party: that it has been swallowed up by the infantile politics of grievance, identity and offence-taking. These are no longer traits limited to the so-called ‘snowflake’ generation or people in academia – rather, political parties themselves now embrace and weaponise overblown identitarian sensitivity and self-pity in order to chill political criticism, silence certain opinions, and exercise greater control over what it is permissible to say in public life. People are using Trump’s visit to talk up the division and crisis he has apparently visited upon the American republic, but right now I am more worried by the insight we are getting into the further drift of British political life into the elitism and censoriousness of identity politics.
