Tech experts boycott AI program analyzing objects from drone footage

About a dozen Google employees have resigned in protest over the company’s involvement in a Pentagon AI program known as Project Maven.

“Project Maven focuses on computer vision — an aspect of machine learning and deep learning — that autonomously extracts objects of interest from moving or still imagery,” according to Marine Corps Col. Drew Cukor.

“There is no ‘black box’ that delivers the AI system the government needs, at least not now,” he said. “Key elements have to be put together…and the only way to do that is with commercial partners alongside us.”

That’s where Google comes in. But some employees have resigned due to ethical concerns of AI in drone warfare as well as worries about Google’s political motivations for participating in a such a project.

“At some point, I realized I could not in good faith recommend anyone join Google, knowing what I knew. I realized if I can’t recommend people join here, then why am I still here?” a resigning Google employee told Gizmodo.

“I tried to remind myself right that Google’s decisions are not my decisions. I’m not personally responsible for everything they do. But I do feel responsibility when I see something that I should escalate it,” another added.

“Actions speak louder than words, and that’s a standard I hold myself to as well,” a third resigning employee said. “I wasn’t happy just voicing my concerns internally. The strongest possible statement I could take against this was to leave.”

In addition to the resignations, an internal Google petition signed by over 4,000 employees asks CEO Sundar Pichai to cancel its contract with the Pentagon on Project Maven’s development.

“We believe that Google should not be in the business of war. Therefore we ask that Project Maven be canceled, and that Google draft, publicize and enforce a clear policy stating that neither Google nor its contractors will ever build warfare technology,” the petition reads.

“This plan will irreparably damage Google’s brand and its ability to compete for talent. Amid growing fears of biased and weaponized AI, Google is already struggling to keep the public’s trust. By entering into this contract, Google will join the ranks of companies like Palantir, Raytheon, and General Dynamics. The argument that other firms, like Microsoft and Amazon, are also participating doesn’t make this any less risky for Google. Google’s unique history, its motto “Don’t Be Evil,” and its direct reach into the lives of billions of users set it apart.”

Google pushed back against its employees, assuring them that the technology it develops won’t be used in lethal military application.

“Maven is a well-publicized DoD project, and Google is working on one part of it—specifically scoped to be for non-offensive purposes and using open-source object-recognition software available to any Google Cloud customer,” a Google spokesperson said last month.

“The technology is used to flag images for human review and is intended to save lives and save people from having to do highly tedious work.”

“Any military use of machine learning naturally raises valid concerns. We’re actively engaged across the company in a comprehensive discussion of this important topic and also with outside experts, as we continue to develop our policies around the development and use of our machine learning technologies.”

Google has not yet responded to the latest resignations.

5. Extension of long-term loans to Russia and Soviet satellites.

they are now doing in the Congo.)

12. Resist any attempt to outlaw the Communist Party.

13. Do away with all loyalty oaths.

14. Continue giving Russia access to the U.S. Patent Office.

15. Capture one or both of the political parties in the United States.

16. Use technical decisions of the courts to weaken basic American institutions by claiming their activities violate civil rights.

Germany: Macron receives Charlemagne Prize in Aachen

French President Emmanuel Macron received the Charlemagne Prize in an award ceremony held in Aachen on Thursday, in recognition of his 'vision for a new Europe.' A ceremony was held in the Aachen Cathedral, where Macron took the time to thank the hosts for the honor and repeated his vision to a common path for the Eurozone. German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Mayor of Aachen Marcel Philipp, President of the European Central Bank Mario Draghi and Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko also attended the ceremony, after Macron held a meeting with his German and Ukrainian counterparts. The leaders are expected to agree on a common position on peacekeeping forces in the Donbass region before Merkel and Macron visit Russian President Vladimir Putin to further negotiations. The Charlemagne Prize has been awarded on an annual basis since 1950 in the city of Aachen, the heart of Charlemagne's Holy Roman Empire. The prize recognizes works done in the service of European unification.

Emmanuel Macron has demanded closer and faster EU integration towards a superstate, in a speech where he vowed to “yield nothing” to conservative eastern members which believe in a Europe of strong nations.

Speaking in Aachen, where he received this year’s pro-EU Charlemagne prize “in recognition of his vision of a new Europe” and his “decisive stance” against nationalism, the French president urged Brussels to move full speed ahead on monetary union and creating a single foreign policy and defence strategy for the whole bloc.

Condemning the “music of nationalism [that] is resounding everywhere in Europe”, Macron called on Europhiles who want to see more power concentrated in Brussels to “move forward with full force and as quickly as possible” with plans for integration so as to drown out the “clear [voices] of nationalists and demagogues”.

“Barbed wire reappears everywhere in Europe, including in the minds,” the French leader cautioned, declaring that he would “yield nothing” in the fight with Hungary and Poland over so-called EU values, Politico reports.

Presenting Macron with this year’s prize, Angela Merkel endorsed the former investment banker’s vision for Europe, declaring: “We come from different political pasts but we find common ground, and that is the magic of Europe.”

The German Chancellor also repeated previous calls for a new EU migration policy based on “solidarity” across the bloc, insisting that closing the border to people from the third world was “not a solution”.

Demanding EU leaders protect “the European system of values … the dignity of each individual, in short everything that constitutes European identity,” Merkel warned the bloc should do everything to guard against “narrow-minded, backward-looking nationalisms and authoritarian temptations.”

On the same day, Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán used his inaugural speech in Budapest to denounce the EU superstate envisioned by France and Germany as a “nightmare”.

“The [European] Union must function as an alliance of free nations and give up on its delusional nightmares of a United States of Europe,” he said, vowing to oppose mass migration — the goal of which he warned was the disintegration of nation-states and the creation of a single “open society” ruled from Brussels.

Previous winners of the Charlemagne prize, which is awarded for efforts to advance EU integration, include Tony Blair, Henry Kissinger, Bill Clinton, and Angela Merkel herself.

Receiving the award in 2016, Pope Francis used his acceptance speech to outline his vision of a borderless Europe which would welcome and embrace unlimited numbers of third world migrants.

Declaring the founding fathers of the bloc to have been “heralds of peace and prophets of the future” he asserted that their vision of Europe should inspire the continent “to build bridges and tear down walls.”

PARIS – France pledged on Friday to push back against the threat of US sanctions against French companies doing business with Iran, in the wake of Washington’s withdrawal from the international nuclear agreement with Tehran.

The French government is seeking waivers and longer transition periods from the United States for companies such as Renault and Total, Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said, while pressing for European Union measures to improve the bloc’s “economic sovereignty” in the longer term.

Hungary's Prime Minister announced the days of “liberal democracy” are over and Hungary will establish itself as a “21st Century Christian democracy.”

At the commencement of his fourth term as prime minister, Viktor Orbán laid out a bold new vision for his nation, proclaiming, “the stars above Hungary shine brighter than ever.”

“Hungary is ready to take on a big challenge,” Orbán said. “Now we will be hunting for big game.”

“Rather than try to fix a liberal democracy that has run aground, we will build a 21st Century Christian democracy which guarantees human dignity, freedom and security, protects the equal rights of men and women, the model of the traditional family, puts the brakes on anti-Semitism, protects our Christian culture, and provides opportunity for the maintenance and development of our nation,” he declared. “We need to say it out loud because you can’t reform a nation in secrecy: the era of liberal democracy is over.”

Reminiscent of President Donald Trump’s inauguration speech in 2017, PM Orbán radiated patriotism and optimism for the future of his nation as he called upon Magyars to unify and make Hungary great again.

He laid out the framework for his new administration, one he says will work to transform Hungary into the most secure and fastest developing nation in Europe - an effect he hopes will positively impact Hungary’s neighbors as well.

“There isn’t anything more beautiful, secure, ancient and protected than our Carpathian basin,” Orbán said. "I know that many will consider it impossible, but I think it is achievable for Hungary to be among the top five European countries to live and work in by 2030."

“I will perform all my duties with respect to the interest of Hungary and the Hungarian people and in accordance with Christian values.”

According to an analysis conducted by the Nézőpont Institute in the wake of Hungary's historic April election, Orban's FIDESZ-KDNP coalition is the 'strongest political force' across all age demographics in the country, increasing its base by approximately 500,000 votes since 2014, indicating that the coalition could continue to win elections for the foreseeable future.

Prominent Muslims in Sweden are now demanding that the Islamic call to prayer be broadcast throughout the country after it was allowed in the city of Växjö.

On Tuesday, Swedish police granted a mosque in the southern city of Vaxjo permission to broadcast the call to prayer, which commonly includes the refrain “Allahu Akbar,” over loudspeakers once a week.

Some politicians criticized the decision, with Anna Tenje of the conservative Moderates asserting it risked “pulling the city further apart.”

Leader of the Christian Democrats Ebba Busch Thor, who campaigned against the decision, said “people shouldn’t have to hear it in their homes.”

However, with three mosques in the country now being allowed to broadcast the call to prayer, Avdi Islami, spokesman of Växjö’s Muslim Foundation, said the call should be heard nationwide.

“We want to call out at more places. There are many Muslims who are Swedish citizens, who have the same rights as everyone else,” he said.

As Douglas Murray documents in his book The Strange Death of Europe, native Swedes will be an ethnic minority in their own country within the lifetimes of most people alive today if current immigration rates continue.

A 2017 Pew Research report put the number of Muslims living in Sweden at approximately 810,000, or 8.1 per cent of the population.

In cities like Malmo, which has suffered a surge in violent crime and gang-related disorder, non-natives already make up half of the population.

As we reported in February, Sweden appointed a Pakistani Muslim migrant as the head of its national heritage board, with the individual admitting that he hasn’t “read anything about cultural heritage.”

44-year-old Qaisar Mahmood told a radio show that Sweden’s cultural traditions “hide hideous motives,” while expressing his intent to oppose Swedes who “want to protect the culture” and are resistant to change.

Swedes who criticize Islam on social media are being prosecuted for hate speech.

A 55-year-old Swedish man was recently put on trial and fined $1,265 for committing a “crime of opinion,” after he posted on Facebook that Muslims, “account for a lot of gang crime in Sweden and other violent stuff like rapes,” despite this being statistically true.

While a clear majority of Swedes are against broadcasting the Call to Prayer, Muslims now seem to want them all over the country, Fria Tider reports. Avdi Islami, spokesman of Växjö’s Muslim Foundation, explains that he wants more mosques to do the same as in Växjö and apply for permission for prayer calls, so that the Muslim message can be heard across the country.

The Bishop of Växjö, Fredrik Modéus, openly supported the Växjö Muslim Foundation’s application for the call to prayer. Police announced the acceptance of “Växjö Muslim’s application to send prayer calls via speakers at the local mosque once a week, every Friday.” In March, the Växjö mosque that applied to broadcast the call to prayer asked Allah to “destroy the Jews.”

A former imam, Tomas Samuel, who is now a Christian apologist, warned that the Muslim call to prayer “shows power and control over the country.” And applications to broadcast loud Muslim calls to prayer are not unique to Sweden.

• Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared months ago that “we are struggling so that a foreign flag will not be waved anywhere where adhan [the Islamic call to prayer] is recited.”
• Also in February, a German court banned outdoor Muslim calls to prayer because of local complaints over the content of the chant, which set Islam above Christianity.
• In January 2017 in Britain, a row broke out after an Islamic call to prayer was held inside the historic Gloucester Cathedral.
• Last year, Israel moved to mute the early morning call to prayer over loudspeakers at mosques, because residents had become enraged over loss of sleep.

Meanwhile, a woman in Austria, recovering from a stroke and neck injury, complained to staff about loud Islamic prayers in her hospital room; she was told to see a psychologist.

At least 23 of the 30 major league baseball teams plan to host a homosexual “Pride Night” during the 2018 season, leaving just two teams to have never held such an event—the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Angels—and even then, the two still support the sin of homosexuality by other means. The other five teams have hosted Pride Night in years past.

The majority of the teams plan to hold their events during June, which homosexual advocates observe as “Pride Month.” Pride Night includes various gestures of support, such as the display of a rainbow flag, the offering of homosexual-themed merchandise, the presentation of a homosexual choral group or the zeroing in on homosexuals for kiss cams.

Some teams specifically highlight their scheduled Pride Night on their website.

“The Phillies invite you to celebrate Philadelphia’s rich LGBTQ culture at our second annual Pride Night Celebration at Citizens Bank Park on Thursday, June 28 at 7:05 p.m. when the Phillies host the Washington Nationals,” writes the Philadelphia Phillies. “All members of the LGBT community, as well as family, friends and organizations are invited to come out and show their pride at this event.”

The St. Louis Cardinals additionally are offering a rainbow-themed t-shirt to attendees of their upcoming Pride Night, and plan to donate a part of the ticket sales to a homosexual advocacy organization.

“Pride St. Louis and the St. Louis Cardinals are partnering to present the 2nd Annual Pride Night at Busch Stadium on Friday, August 17,” their site reads. “Join LGBT friends, family, and allies to watch the Cardinals take on the Milwaukee Brewers.”

“With the purchase of a special theme ticket, fans will receive a Cardinals t-shirt with a rainbow STL logo. A portion of each ticket sold will benefit Missouri Courage Scholarship, which is the first, and largest, state-wide LGBTQ scholarship organization in Missouri,” it states.

The major league team says that it plans to present a men’s choral group singing “God Bless America” prior to the game.

The Boston Red Sox will hold a pre-game “pride party” and the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus will perform the national anthem at the June 7 game.

Other teams scheduled to offer Pride Night include the Minnesota Twins, the Milwaukee Brewers, the New York Mets, the Atlanta Braves, the Baltimore Orioles, the Seattle Mariners, the Oakland Athletics, and the Washington Nationals.

LifeSite News reports that while the New York Yankees have not hosted a pride-themed evening, as they do not offer themed games of any kind, they do support “organizations that assist lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youths.” The Los Angeles Angels also sell pride rainbow shirts on their website.

As previously reported, Christians believe that all men are born with the Adamic sin nature, and have inherent inclinations that are contrary to the law of God, being utterly incapable of helping themselves. It is why Jesus outlined in John 3:5-7 that men must be regenerated by the second birth.

“Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God,” he declared. “That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.”

2 Corinthians 5:15-17 also teaches, “He died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto Him which died for them, and rose again. … Therefore, if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”

Jesus additionally outlined in Matthew 19:4-5, “Have ye not read that He which made them at the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife, and they twain shall be one flesh?’”
