The Obama administration is forging a pathway for Iran to purchase American-made airliners that are likely to be converted for use in the Islamic Republic’s military, drawing concerns on Capitol Hill amid a flurry of recent attacks by Iranian-backed forces on U.S. military assets in the Middle East, according to conversations with lawmakers and fleet information obtained by the Washington Free Beacon.

Iran recently announced that it had struck deals with the U.S. Boeing airline manufacturer and France’s AirBus that would permit the companies to transfer technology and provide training to help the Islamic Republic produce equipment that would strengthen its aging fleet of American-made planes.

Iran currently uses at least six Boeing aircraft as part of its air force fleet. These planes were put on display last week when Iran launched a series of war drills aimed at deterring Western attacks.

As Iran angles to purchase 80 new jets from Boeing, which has lobbied heavily in favor of these sales, the Obama administration is being accused of helping to pave the way for Iran to transfer these commercial liners for use in its war fleet, according to lawmakers and sources familiar with Iran’s military buildup.

Iran has a history of transferring commercial jets purchased from America to its air force for use in military operations and the transfer of weapons and other illicit material abroad.

Lawmakers worry that the White House’s efforts to facilitate new airliner sales to Iran Air, the country’s national airline, will help Tehran bolster its war fleet at a time when it is threatening military action against Western forces in the region.

“We should not be surprised to see Iran’s latest military demonstrations feature Boeing 747s,” Rep. Peter Roskam (R., Ill.) told the Free Beacon. “It is incredibly irresponsible for any American company to sell products to the Islamic Republic that can easily be used for military purposes.”

“This is not hypothetical,” Roskam said. “We know the military has requisitioned Boeing planes from Iran Air in the past. Boeing is literally enhancing the military capabilities of the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism.”

The Free Beacon has learned that Iran converted several Boeing planes sold to its commercial outlet Iran Air for use in its air force fleet.

One Boeing 747, for instance, was sold to Iran in the mid-1970s after being used by the now-defunct TWA airlines. After being used by Iran Air, the plane was transferred to Iran’s Air Force, which still operates the plane, according to fleet information.

Several other refurbished planes were also converted for use first by Iran Air and then transferred for use in the country’s air force, according to open source information.

Iran’s use of these U.S.-made planes in its war fleet has raised renewed concerns from U.S. officials on the heels of reports that Boeing and AirBus will train Iranian engineers to repair these planes on their own.

This would enable Iran to reverse engineer key technology for use in its military and potentially skirt any new international sanctions that may be placed on the program, according to sources familiar with Iran’s military activities.

Iran also has inked a deal with Russia to co-produce Su-30 fighter jets, which are similar to American strike force planes such as the F-15E.

“It seems the Airbus and Boeing deal includes technology transfer, education, and participation in producing aircraft parts and equipment,” Maghsood Asadi Samani, the secretary of Iran’s airline companies organization, was recently quoted as telling Iran’s state-controlled press.

Iran has made it a priority in recent months to rebuild its aging air force and other military assets.

One senior congressional source involved in efforts to prevent these sales told the Free Beacon that the Obama administration is effectively helping Iran rebuild its war fleet with American-made planes.

“This is insane–an American company is rebuilding the Ayatollah’s Air Force right before our eyes,” the source said. “They’re not just selling aircraft either–they are cutting the Iranians into the production process, building supply lines within the Islamic Republic so the regime can insulate itself from any future attempts to impose sanctions. This is basically the equivalent of setting up a factory to build Sherman tanks in Munich in 1938.”

Sources told the Free Beacon that Boeing has been lobbying heavily on Capitol Hill to ensure these new deals with Iran are not blocked….

In an unexpected twist, AUFC president Brad Woodhouse, the recipient of the $20,000, heard that Project Veritas Action was releasing undercover videos exposing AUFC’s activities. He told a journalist that AUFC was going to return the twenty thousand dollars. He said it was because they were concerned that it might have been an illegal foreign donation. Project Veritas Action was pleased but wondered why that hadn’t been a problem for the month that they had the money.

Just recently on Friday, October 21^st at 2:30 pm false apostolic teacher C. Peter Wagner passed into eternity.  One of Wagner’s best friends, “apostle” Chuck Pierce, confirmed Wagner’s death on his Facebook page Friday.  In honor of Wagner’s death, longtime friend Ed Stetzer wrote an article at Christianity Today entitled “C. Peter Wagner (1930-2016), Some Thoughts on His Life and Passing” highlighting their friendship.  While death can be a sad occasion for those here on earth as they face the lose a close friend, family member or leader. It is an even more woeful thought that the one who died, C. Peter Wagner, is spending eternity in hell. Even more disheartening is that a prominent face in evangelicalism, Ed Stetzer is leading many astray and right into the welcoming arms of the debaucherous neo-evangelical movement by honoring Wagner’s death.  Stetzer is essentially aiding in leading people to the same false christ that Wagner worshiped by paying tribute to Wagner’s death. The death of Wagner should not be celebrated, but be used as a lesson to show where false teaching leads — to hell.

Is it harsh or judgmental to say that C. Peter Wagner has not passed into glory as Charisma News,and others would lead us to believe? No, it is not judgmental or insensitive to speak the truth. Many may criticize me or Pulpit & Pen for striking while the proverbial iron is still hot, but there is no better time in which to speak truth. Truth is not a respecter of time, emotions, people’s states of mind or what the public deems as proper etiquette. Truth only knows one thing–that it must be proclaimed. As Christians, apologists of the faith once delivered, and polemicists, we must be ready always to speak the truth; no matter the minute, the hour, or the day the truth must go forth.  From where do we gather our truth? We receive our final authority, our truth, on all matters from the sufficiency of the closed canon of Scripture — God’s Word.

The biblical truth is that C. Peter Wagner is not in “Glory” today, unless he repented last moment of his false teachings and heresy, putting his faith in the Christ of the Bible and not the one of his choosing. Yes, that is correct. Wagner worshiped a different Jesus, not the one of the Bible. Wagner praised the “christ”  of the NAR, the “christ” of extrabiblical revelation, the “christ” of modern day Montanism–a different “christ” altogether.

Wagner is often referred to as the grandfather of NAR movement.  It was Wagner that invented the term “New Apostolic Reformation” and then charged himself as God’s appointed leader of this new extrabiblical organization. It is through Wagner and his promotion of the heresy of Modern Montanism that the Charismatic window of heresy was slid open, mainstreaming it into today’s neo-evangelical landscape. Wagner had far-reaching influence on outer fringe sub-Christian sects that support such false teachings Dominionism; The 7 Mountain Mandate; Third Wave Revivalism. Wagner’s teachings had power over groups like The Latter Rain Movement; Joel’s Army; IHOP; Bill Johnson’s Bethel Church, The Hillsong Media Empire.  In Wagner’s later years he became the patriarch of the heretical  Church Growth Movement. It is due in large part to Wagner that many of these outliers and skeptical groups are now part mainstream Christianity which form this quasi-evangelical movement we see today.

If you are reading this and happen to follow any of the teachers or listen to any of the teachings from these unorthodox groups, you need to repent of your sins against a holy thrice God and put your faith in the biblical Christ.  As for those who claim the title of “Evangelical leadership” or to be a” missiologist” such as Ed Stetzer, you need to repent and stop promoting false teachers like C. Peter Wagner as a biblical viable Christian option to those in Christianity under your authority. It is these attempts to legitimatize heretics such as C. Peter Wagner that not only bring shame to the body of true believers but also will bring God’s holy wrath on those who promote them.  For it is through the Gospel that God has provided a way of salvation for men. Through the gift of His son to the world, by repentance of sin and faith in the Christ of the Bible that one will enter into the Glorious eternity with the Father. It is not through the promotion of sub-Christian chicanery like that of the teachings of C. Peter Wager one enters eternity with a Holy and Righteous God.

NAR pioneer and chief theologian C. Peter Wagner dies

C. Peter Wagner, one of the most influential leaders in the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR),died Friday at age 86. Many people who are part of the global NAR movement have been deeply influenced by Wagner without knowing it. In short, he did the heavy lifting theologically for the movement.

Wagner was a professor of church growth at Fuller Theological Seminary, where he taught for 30 years (1971 to 2001). He first coined the term “New Apostolic Reformation” to refer to the growing number of churches in the 1990s that started to accept the idea of present-day apostles. He wrote six books on the topic of apostles. He was the presiding leader over the International Coalition of Apostolic Leaders during its formative years, from 2001 to 2010.

Not all NAR leaders worked directly with Wagner or even agreed with all his teachings. Even so, there is significant overlap between the teachings of many NARleaders and those of Wagner. To understand NAR, one must understand Wagner’s views.

Though Wagner is gone, his influence on the NAR movement is lasting as the baton of NAR teachings is carried on by others, including Bill Johnson, senior pastor of Bethel Church in Redding, California.,  and Mike Bickle, founder of the International House of Prayer in Kansas City, Missouri.

C. Peter Wagner, a church growth guru who accepted the mantle of an apostle in the last decades of his life, passed away on October 21. Wagner was a missionary to Bolivia for 16 years and a professor at Fuller Theological Seminary from 1971-1999. While at Fuller, Wagner moved into the charismatic movement under the influence of John Wimber and became increasingly deceived to the end of his life. They jointly taught an influential course in the early 1980s called “Signs, Wonders and Church Growth,” promoting the use of “miracles” to make evangelism effectual. Wagner coined the term “Third Wave” to describe evangelicals who accept charismatic sign gifts and phenomena but do want to be known as charismatics. (The first wave was classical Pentecostalism, and the second was the charismatic movement.) Wagner said, “A key part of my own spiritual pilgrimage was my close friendship with John Wimber, which began in the mid-1970’s” (The Third Wave of the Holy Spirit, p. 27). He claimed that Bible-style prophesy was being restored. In a message at Indianapolis ’90, Wagner said, “In 1980, God began speaking to the churches about the resurgence of biblical prophecy. ... I’m talking about Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, Isaiah kind of prophecy, where God speaks to the churches. ... all these signs, all that the Spirit is saying to the churches, are pointing to the great revival, the capital ‘R’ revival ... children are prophesying, children are laying hands on the sick and they’re getting healed” (from notes taken at the conference by D. Cloud). Wagner claimed that he was healed of frequent headaches after John Wimber told him it was a “demon of headache” and that he had to “treat it like a cat on the back porch! yell at it and tell it to go away” (Ibid., p. 69). This is the type of nonsense that has so often passed for healing through all “waves” of Pentecostalism. Their sign gifts are nonexistent; their apostles are ridiculous; their tongues are gibberish; and their prophesies are a lie. In the 1990s, Wagner became a leader in the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR), believing that Christ’s return will be preceded by the restoration of apostles and a great revival of apostolic signs. The “prophetess” Cindy Jacobs proclaimed Wagner an apostle and said the Lord showed her that Wagner was “going to change the face of Christianity ... like what Martin Luther did” (“Mobilizing the Prophetic Office,” National School of the Prophets, May 11, 2000). Wagner wrote many books on these subjects and had a vast heretical influence. We don’t know where Peter Wagner is today, but we do know that he now understands that he is no apostle. I heard Wagner, Wimber, and many other Pentecostal, charismatic, and “Third Wave” heretics speak at conferences in New Orleans ’87, Indianapolis ’90, St. Louis 2000, and elsewhere. Indeed. And the Catholic Church, obsessed with a spurious and self-defeating “Muslim-Christian dialogue,” couldn’t care less about the plight of these Christians, either; in fact, the Catholic hierarchy actively moves to silence those Catholics who speak out about what is happening.

“Turkey Targets Christians,” by Robert Jones, Gatestone Institute, October 23, 2016:

American pastors in Turkey are being arrested hand over fist.

American Pastor Andrew Brunson, of the Resurrection Protestant Church, was arrested in Izmir (Smyrna)on October 7 alongside his wife, Norine Lyn Brunson, for “threatening the national security of Turkey.” Brunson is expected to be deported in 15 days. The couple is still being held in detention.

Turkish authorities also seized the residence permit of Ryan D. Keating, an American student pursuing a PhD in the philosophy of religion at Ankara University. Keating is a Christian who heads the Ankara Refugee Ministry for the Kurtulus Church. While he was leaving Turkey for work purposes, he was told at the airport that his residence permit in Turkey had been cancelled in September for “national security”, meaning that he will not be able to reenter the country. His wife and children are still in Ankara.

Yet another American Protestant pastor, Patrick Jansen, was not allowed to reenter Gaziantep, where he served. And still another American Protestant was ordered to leave Turkey upon landing at the airport.

They are not the first. In the last four years, more than 100 Christian pastors and other religious officials have been deported from Turkey — the visas of some of them were not renewed or were completely cancelled. They have been banned from reentering.

Pastor Brunson had also been exposed to an armed attack in front of the church in 2011, by a Turkish Muslim from the city of Manisa who shouted: “Al-Qaeda will bring you to account”, called members of the congregation “traitors” and threatened them with “bombing the church in Manisa.”

In the meantime, the Protestant Life Bridge Church, in the southern city of Antakya (Antioch), has been closed and sealed upon a complaint of the National Education Directorate and the order of the governor’s office for “giving education illegally.” The church, officials of which are also American citizens, was giving Bible lessons to its members.

The congregation has started looking for a new place to hold their Sunday services, the Turkish Christian news channel SAT-7 TURK reported on October 8.

The Protestant community in Turkey has been exposed to discrimination and persecution for a long time.

According to a global report by the organization Open Doors,

“Persecution of Christians is more than just physical violence. It is a complex, multifaceted phenomenon that involves many aspects such as various forms of cultural marginalization, government discrimination, hindrances on conversion, interferences on participation in public affairs and restrictions on church life.”

According to the 2015 Human Rights Violations Report by the Association of Protestant Churches, Protestants in Turkey are continually exposed to hate crimes, and physical and verbal assaults.

For example, on September 10, 2015, a man went to the Ankara Batıkent Bereket Church, shouted profanities and insults, and struck the church leader. Security forces arrived and took the man to the local police station, where he was released with no action taken.

The man threatened the church leader again, demanding he shut down the church. When the police were notified again, no one came. And when the pastor closed the church and went to the precinct to explain, again no official action was taken.

The Protestant community in Turkey is not recognized as a legal entity, and hence, has no legal right to organize in officially-recognized churches.

The Association of Protestant Churches reported:

The Protestant community has generally tried to solve this issue to setting up associations or becoming a representative of an already existing association. As of 2015, members of the Protestant community have 1 foundation, 35 church associations and 18 representative offices connected to these associations. This association forming process continues. Associations are not accepted as a “church” or a “place of worship.” The problem of a religious congregation becoming a legal entity has not been completely solved. The present legal path does not allow for a congregation to obtain a legal personality as a “congregation.” … Thus, small congregations continue to be helpless…

The Protestant Community does not have the right to share its religion freely or to train religious leaders.

Another source of discrimination against Christians in Turkey is the obligatory declaration of faith: “The section for religious affiliation on the identity cards forces people to declare their faith and increases the risk of facing discrimination in every arena of life,” according to the Association of Protestant Churches.

There are also problems in education and the compulsory “Religious Culture and Moral Knowledge” class, textbooks of which are dominated by the tenets of Islam and Islamic practices.

Currently, all school children in primary and secondary schools in Turkey must attend the class.

According to the 2015 report by the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom, on the compulsory religious education in Turkey in textbooks, “The characterizations of both Jewish and Christian beliefs, sacred texts, and prophets are done through Islamic beliefs rather than through what Jews and Christians believe themselves.”

Teaching the Bible is considered “illegal” by the Turkish authorities, so what are Turkish children are taught about Christianity at school? A brief section in a Turkish textbook describes Christianity as follows:

“When Jesus reached 30 years of age, Allah gave him the duty of being a prophet. He then began inviting people to believe in Allah. At the start, only 12 people believed in his call. They are called the ‘disciples.’ The holy book of Christianity is Incil [the Gospels]. The four Incils written by and known with the names of their writers as Matthew, Mark, Luke and John are the most famous… Christians accept prophethood of other prophets besides Prophet Muhammad… Christians believe all human beings are born sinners, thus all children are washed with holy water to cleanse from their sins. This is called baptism.”

As the report of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom stresses, according to Christian theology, this description is completely false:

The view of Jesus as a prophet is not what Christians believe, but what Muslims believe. Similarly, the holy book of Christians is not only Incil, but the Kutsal Kitap or Kitabı Mukaddes, the Holy Bible, with the Old and New Testaments as the two main parts. Students are not told where the four Gospels, which are part of the New Testament, fit into the Christian Bible. The expression “the most famous” is also confusing, as they are the only ones in the canon of the New Testament; it most likely alludes to the idea that there were Gospels which prophesied Prophet Muhammad but were changed or destroyed by Christians. Similarly, it is not clear what the text means in describing Christians as believing in other prophets besides Muhammad. Also, there is no unanimity in Christianity on the baptism of children, or its meaning regarding salvation from sins.

“In principle, students can be exempted by a simple written request by their guardians to the school authorities, however, in practice this is not always adhered to,” added the report.

Religious minorities have reported that some schools refuse exemptions on the premise that there is no other class students can take, and they offer no similar alternative electives specific to the traditions of such children. Instead, religious minority students are faced with the option of taking the class or sitting alone somewhere else on the school premises during the classes, thus separating them from their peers and singling out their religious differences.

For school-age children, such experiences can be traumatic. Thus, many parents of religious minority children continue to let their children take compulsory religious education rather than putting them through such an ordeal at a young age.

The sources of Christian persecution in Turkey are “Islamic extremism and religious nationalism,” reported Open Doors. “Islam has become a key feature of Turkish nationalism. Pressure on believers from Muslim backgrounds is especially acute due to the Islamic social environment.”

According to the Istanbul Protestant Church Foundation, which primarily consists of Turkish converts to Christianity:

“Christians still face many difficulties as they attempt to be accepted in their own society even though Turkey boasts as being the most pluralistic culture in the Middle East.

“The land of Asia Minor is the historical setting of the first expressions of the Christian faith, widely recorded throughout the New Testament. Today, this land continues to host some of the most ancient churches. However, the Christian presence has shrunk dramatically in the last century due to many adverse circumstances.

Today, only less than 0.2% of Turkey’s population is Christian. But even this tiny, dwindling minority is still routinely exposed to discrimination on many levels. The historical and current situation of Christians in Turkey and the wider region makes one wonder: Is there no end to Christian-hatred in the Muslim world?

Is there also no end to the Jew-hatred, Alevi-hatred, Yazidi-hatred, atheist-hatred and basically hatred of all non-Muslim groups? Is there no end to the bloodshed between the Sunni Muslims and Shia Muslims? It seems that Islamic jihad and Islamic supremacism has created a deeply anti-humanitarian culture in the Muslim world, which has caused the extermination or repression of millions of people.

It also seems that it is high time that the activists of the global “human rights community” condemned or at least publicly discussed this “culture of hate” in Muslim communities — and particularly the Christianophobia. But apparently because the victims are Christian, these “human rights activists” could not care less.

Whether the U.S. administration will speak out for the American Christians whose rights and religious liberty have been violated in Turkey remains to be seen.

Don’t hold your breath.

CHICAGO – The largest Catholic university in the U.S. prevented an on-campus organization from displaying a pro-life poster, suggesting that the message was “provocative” and “hurtful.”

DePaul University is a private university in Chicago, founded in 1898. Although the university celebrates its “Catholic character” in its mission statement and seeks to foster the Catholic faith on campus, the school is being criticized for refusing to allow an organization to display a pro-life poster.

Earlier this month, the DePaul College Republicans requested permission to display on campus a poster bearing the phrase “Unborn Lives Matter.” Campus officials declined their request, saying the pro-life sign would have to be redesigned before it could be displayed.

The university’s president, Dennis Holtschneider, explained their reasoning in an online letter.

“DePaul is a private Catholic institution, and … we are committed to developing arguments and exploring important issues that can be steeped in controversy and, oftentimes, emotion,” he wrote. “Yet there will be times when some forms of speech challenge our grounding in Catholic and Vincentian values.  When that happens, you will see us refuse to allow members of our community to be subjected to bigotry that occurs under the cover of free speech.”

Holtschneider then cited the College Republicans’ proposed poster, saying it was banned because the message “provokes the Black Lives Matter movement.” Therefore, unless the poster is redesigned, it will not be allowed on campus.

“Certainly, everyone is allowed to have their opinions on these topics,” he added. “I simply ask when you are expressing your opinion that you respect the difference between a reasoned discussion and words whose primary purpose is to wound.”

DePaul College Republicans said they were appalled by the university’s pronouncement.

“We, the DePaul College Republicans, are appalled by the university’s decision to censor pro-life messaging and give the Black Lives Matter movement some sort of protected status,” said Jorin Burkhart, an executive board member of the Republican club, in a statement to “The College Fix.”

Burkhart said the poster “was in no way meant to ‘mock’ BLM.”

“Frankly, DePaul University seems intent on trashing the very Catholic and American values it claims to be grounded in,” he said.

The Roman Catholic Church’s catechisms condemn abortion in no uncertain terms, describing it as a “moral evil” that is “gravely contrary to the moral law.” But the vice president of the DePaul College Republicans, John Minster, told “The Daily Wire” that the university “has shown its true colors” in disapproving their group’s message.

“Rather than standing up for the pro-life and free speech ethics this ‘Catholic’ University claims to uphold, administration has bent the knee to radical leftists, banning more speech despite the pro-life message,” Minster stated. “These habitual violations of students’ rights are why organizations like the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) have claimed DePaul University may be the worst school for free speech in the nation. Sadly, administration is proving FIRE correct.”

DePaul University is not the only school that has controversially banned pro-life displays. As previously reported, anti-abortion posters were removed from a North Dakota high school and the University of Alabama, following complaints. In 2014, an agitated professor at the University of California—Santa Barbara angrily stole a sign from members of a pro-life organization and later destroyed it with scissors in her office.

Just three weeks away from the end of one of the most contentious presidential campaigns in U.S. history, artists, activists and educators converged in Washington, D.C., to talk, listen and share ideas about how art can influence social justice. The gathering was the three-day conference Creative Time Summit: Occupy the Future.

The summit, which ended Sunday evening, featured more than 50 speakers addressing themes of democracy, social change and art. Speakers included Alicia Garza, organizer, writer and co-creator of #BlackLivesMatter; Hans Ulrich Obrist, artistic director of Serpentine Galleries; and Ian MacKaye, co-founder of Dischord Records and musician with bands including Fugazi and the Evens.

The final day of the summit was held at the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design at the George Washington University and featured breakout sessions that covered topics such as mural making, unionization in art schools, gender equality in the arts and building alliances in the undocumented youth movement. Carmen Montoya, assistant professor of sculpture, led a session called “Rethinking Democratic Decision-Making.”

Corcoran School Director Sanjit Sethi co-hosted Art School/Field School: Democratizing Arts Education through Locational and Community Practices with Richard Saxton, director of M12 Studio and associate professor at the University of Colorado, Boulder.

The round table discussion was designed to be a true conversation. “We want to extract knowledge and recognize the expertise in the room,” Mr. Sethi said.

There is no doubt that it was a “true conversation” in which only one perspective was allowed to be heard.

The summit’s closing event was the collective reading of the co-authored text “I want a president…“ in front of the White House on Sunday evening.

The original “I want a president…” text by artist and activist Zoe Leonard was created in 1992, listing demands for a new U.S. president. The new text was developed collectively through a series of community writing workshops that were co-organized by curators Natalie Campbell and Saisha Grayson and held at the Corcoran School, MLK Library, Bread for the City and other organizations in D.C. and New York City. Earlier this month, participants came to the Corcoran School for the final editing of the document that was to be performed.

Dozens of summit attendees came together to read both the 1992 and 2016 texts in unison, repeatedly for an hour. As tourists and passersby stopped to listen, they were encouraged to join the performance. The atmosphere was jovial as people joined their voices together and the reading created an inclusive space for an engaging conversation about our country’s future.

Here is one excerpt from the 2016 “I want a president…” text:

I want a Native American for president. I want a Muslim refugee for president, and I want a queer for vice president, and I want someone who walked hundreds of miles across a desert and swam across a river to be here….

It’s a common and recurring tendency among conservative Catholics to be complacent regarding the jihad threat because of a desire to see Muslims as allies in a culture war against all-encroaching and authoritarian secularism. This idea is based on ignorance of or indifference to the fact that, with its polygamy, divorce at a word, sexual slavery of Infidel women, allowance for wife-beating, tolerance for early abortion, and more, Islamic sexual morality is hardly akin to Catholic sexual morality. There is also a tendency, which is also found all over the West outside the Catholic Church, to assume that various concepts, and acts designed to express them, mean the same thing in an Islamic context that they do in a non-Muslim context. That false assumption is what we see here from Archbishop Chaput with regard to modesty.

Archbishop Chaput says: “The hijab and the burqa say two important things in a morally confused culture: ‘I’m not sexually available;’ and ‘I belong to a community different and separate from you and your obsessions.'” In reality, that is what a Western woman might be intending to convey, but in an Islamic context the message is slightly different, and that slight difference is all-important. Yes, the hijab and burqa certainly say, ‘I’m not sexually available” and “I belong to a community different and separate from you and your obsessions.” But there is more. The Qur’an says: “O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused.” (33:59) This is the foundation of the prevailing assumption in Islamic culture that if a woman is raped or sexually abused, it is her fault for exciting men, who can’t be expected to control themselves. This is the assumption underlying honor killing, and the reason why it is so common in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and other Muslim countries for women to be imprisoned after they were raped: the rape is their fault.

So the hijab and burqa are really saying: “I am assuming the responsibility — willingly or not — for the possibility that I might be raped or sexually abused.” It is a visible sign of the subjugation of women.

And that “willingly or not” clause is all-important as well. Archbishop Chaput says: “I admire the integrity of those Muslim women” who wear the hijab and the burqa. He assumes that they are wearing it freely, as they would be in the West. And to be sure, many Muslim women, especially in the West, are indeed wearing it of their own volition. What does Archbishop Chaput think of the integrity of Aqsa Parvez, whose Muslim father choked her to death with her hijab after she refused to wear it? How does he feel about the integrity of Amina Muse Ali, a Christian woman in Somalia whom Muslims murdered because she wasn’t wearing a hijab? And of the 40 women who were murdered in Iraq in 2007 for not wearing the hijab; and of Alya Al-Safar, whose Muslim cousin threatened to kill her and harm her family because she stopped wearing the hijab in Britain; and of Amira Osman Hamid, who faces whipping in Sudan for refusing to wear the hijab; and of the Egyptian girl, also named Amira, who committed suicide after being brutalized for her family for refusing to wear the hijab; and of the Muslim and non-Muslim teachers at the Islamic College of South Australia who were told that they had to wear the hijab or be fired; and of the women in Chechnya whom police shot with paint balls because they weren’t wearing hijab; and of the women also in Chechnya who were threatened by men with automatic rifles for not wearing hijab; and of the elementary school teachers in Tunisia who were threatened with death for not wearing hijab; and of the Syrian schoolgirls who were forbidden to go to school unless they wore hijab; and of the women in Gaza whom Hamas has forced to wear hijab; and of the women in Iran who protested against the regime by daring to take off their legally-required hijab; and of the women in London whom Muslim thugs threatened to murder if they didn’t wear hijab; and of the anonymous young Muslim woman who doffed her hijab outside her home and started living a double life in fear of her parents, and all the other women and girls who have been killed or threatened, or who live in fear for daring not to wear the hijab?

What about their integrity? Those who taunt or brutalize hijab-wearing women are louts and creeps, and should be prosecuted if they commit any acts of violence. At the same time, the women who don’t wear hijab in Muslim countries are far more likely to be victims of violence than hijabis in the West. Who speaks for them? 

And while Archbishop Chaput is admiring the integrity of Muslim women who wear the hijab and the burqa, has he considered the possibility that some of them face lives of misery and brutalization if they dare not to wear it, especially in light of the Qur’an’s mandate to beat women “from whom you fear disobedience” (4:34)?

The conservative Catholic complacency regarding Islam, and particularly Islamic morality, is based on ignorance, as you can see here from my debate with the Catholic apologist Peter Kreeft. It is compounded by the outright falsehoods that Pope Francis continues to spread, most notoriously his outrageously false claim that “authentic Islam and the proper reading of the Koran are opposed to every form of violence.” The Pope has created tremendous confusion among Roman Catholics who imbibe the prevailing idolatry of the papacy, treating every word from the Pope as a divine oracle and even reading out of the Church those who dare to stand up and say that he has said something false when he obviously has. Meanwhile, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops is increasingly authoritarian, ruthlessly suppressing any dissent from the Pope’s complacent and false claim that Islam is a religion of peace with a dispatch it has never shown in teaching or defending the actual tenets of the Catholic Faith. In pursuing this line, however, the papal idolators are digging themselves into a rather large hole, as they’re attaching the Church’s dogmatic and moral authority to a falsehood, which challenges any claim to such authority in the first place. In other words, if one cannot be a Catholic and believe that Islam is not a religion of peace, then Catholicism is false, and the Church not worth staying in anyway. Thus either the Church will reject this suicidal position, and do it soon, or else collapse upon its own self-contradiction.

In his excellent speech at Notre Dame (about which more anon), Archbishop Charles Chaput makes an interesting point about Muslim women who wear the hijab or burqa:

Some of my friends are annoyed by that kind of “in your face” Islam. But I understand it. The hijab and the burqa say two important things in a morally confused culture: “I’m not sexually available;” and “I belong to a community different and separate from you and your obsessions.”

There are problems with Islam, especially in its more assertive forms, and the archbishop says as much in passing. But those two messages are messages that our culture needs to hear….

I have a long list of concerns with the content of Islam. But I admire the integrity of those Muslim women. And we need to help Catholics recover their own sense of distinction from the surrounding secular meltdown. The Church and American democracy are very different kinds of societies with very different structures and goals. They can never be fully integrated without eviscerating the Christian faith. An appropriate “separateness” for Catholics is already there in the New Testament. We’ve too often ignored it because Western civilization has such deep Christian roots. But we need to reclaim it, starting now.
