Nashville Mayor Megan Barry dodged repeated questions at a televised press conference Wednesday night on whether her extra-marital affair with her chief bodyguard, a city employee, was hypocritical as a champion of women’s rights. She also seemed to acknowledge she only came out because the news was breaking.
“I am embarrassed and I am sad and I am sorry for all the pain I caused my family and his family, and I know that God will forgive me, but I know Nashville doesn’t have to,” Barry said. She added she hopes she can earn back people’s trust.
Earlier in the day, in an exclusive interview with NewsChannel 5 Investigates, Barry insisted that she has not misused taxpayer funds as part of the relationship with Metro Police Sergeant Rob Forrest, NewsChannel 5’s Phill Williams reported on Wednesday.
Forrest resigned — the term being used is retirement after 31 years with the police department. Barry said he gave notice on Jan. 17.
During the press conference, Barry was asked more than once about the professional aspect of having an affair with a subordinate, especially in terms of women’s rights. The point was raised that if a man were in her position, he would be expected to resign. Instead, she as boss kept her job and her employee resigned. One reporter said she was “giving women’s rights a bad smell.”
Barry deflected the questions and said the Me Too Movement is about women who have been sexually harassed and discriminated against economically. Her affair is different because it involved two consenting adults, she said repeatedly.
“I didn’t stop being human when I became mayor,” she said more than once.
Barry was asked why she is talking now about the affair, which dates back to several months after the start of her term. She said rumors were swirling and would become public. “I needed to own it,” she said.
The mayor was asked if she could have asked Forrest to resign once the affair started.
“It was wrong, and I should have gone to the chief and I should have said what was happening,” she said.
Barry has racked up nearly double the out-of-town trips of her predecessor, Mayor Karl Dean, it was mentioned during the press conference. She has journeyed to both coasts of the U.S. and places in between. She also traveled to Athens, Greece — and Paris, the City of Lights, widely acknowledged as a romantic destination.
The mayor denies she and Forrest had the affair while he was on duty, being paid by taxpayers.
He averaged $34,000 a year in overtime for the last three years of former Mayor Karl Dean’s term, NewsChannel 5 reported.
But after Barry took office, Forrest’s overtime pay increased to just below $60,000 in fiscal year 2015-2016.
The next year, that increased to more than $75,000, bringing his total pay to $157,187 in fiscal year 2016-2017.
Barry justified having a police guard as a result of the department’s policy for protecting a mayor. She said her police detail only traveled on official trips, not family trips. Her globe-trotting business trips were made for conferences, transit planning and for the soccer stadium issue.
The mayor justified her extensive traveling as a result of her “aggressive schedule.” The schedule lines up with Forrest’s overtime, she said, and she promised she would turn over any records that were requested. She said she did nothing illegal.
Another question dealt with the expense of her trips versus the $2.4 million she wants to cut from Metro departments for a $13.2 million Nashville General Hospital bailout as well as plans to spend $9 billion on a transit plan. The word “hypocritical” was used in connection to Barry asking taxpayers and Metro government to give up billions while she spends time with a lover on the city payroll.
“What I did was wrong,” Barry responded. “I should not have had that affair.” She added that she would have traveled with someone on her security detail if not Forrest.
Barry would not say when or how the affair ended.
The mayor was asked about speculation she had planned to resign during the press conference. She said she will not resign. She said she plans to keep working on transit and her other agendas.
“This is not a tragedy, this is a mistake,” she said.
When asked how difficult pushing her agendas would be now, Barry said, “I have personal failings. I am only human.”

Nashville Mayor Megan Barry Releases Statement on Extramarital Affair: ‘Firmly Committed to Working Hard to Serve the People of Nashville Now and into the Future’
republished below in full unedited for informational, educational, and research purposes:

Late Wednesday, the office of Nashville Mayor Megan Barry released a statement in which she admitted she has “engaged in an extramarital affair with the former head of my security detail.”
Though she apologized to the people of Nashville and her husband, Barry gave no indication she was even considering resigning, saying “I remain firmly committed to working hard to serve the people of Nashville now and into the future.”
A press conference is now scheduled for 7 p.m.
You can read the full statement here:

“Today, I have acknowledged publicly that I have engaged in an extramarital affair with the former head of my security detail.
“I accept full responsibility for the pain I have caused my family and his. I am so sorry to my husband Bruce, who has stood by me in my darkest moments and remains committed to our marriage, just as I am committed to repairing the damage I have done.
“I also must apologize to the people of Nashville who elected me to serve as your mayor. I knew my actions could cause damage to my office and the ones I loved, but I did it anyway. I must hold myself to the highest standard of which the voters deserve to expect. Please know that I’m disappointed in myself but also understand that I’m a human and that I made a mistake.
“In 2015, I was elected to serve as Mayor of Nashville on a platform that included building more affordable housing, improving public education, and promoting better transportation options. We have made progress on these fronts – but there is more to be done. While I regret any distractions that will be caused by my actions, I remain firmly committed to working hard to serve the people of Nashville now and into the future.
“God will forgive me, but the people of Nashville don’t have to. In the weeks and months to come, I will work hard to earn your forgiveness and earn back your trust.”
Two years ago, when Metro Councilman Loinel Greene was implicated in potentially illegal activity and resigned, Mayor Barry had a somewhat different attitude about the standards of conduct that apply to elected officials in Metro Nashville Government.
“Mr. Greene did the right thing by resigning from his position on the Metro Council. Nashville deserves to have elected leaders they can trust to uphold the law and serve as role models. I hope whoever is elected to replace Mr. Greene to serve Council District 1 will do just that,” Mayor Barry said. (emphasis added)
Greene was later disbarred.
Sources tell The Tennessee Star that if Mayor Barry, who has given no indication at all that she intends to resign, were, in fact, to resign, Vice Mayor David Briley would become acting mayor, and a special election for a new mayor would be held within six months.

District Attorney Glenn Funk Requests TBI Investigate Nashville Mayor Megan Barry Affair
BY CHRISTINA BOTTERI
republished below in full unedited for informational, educational, and research purposes:

Fallout from Wednesday’s bombshell admission by Nashville Mayor Megan Barry that she carried on a years-long affair with the head of her security detail, Rob Forrest, continues.
Serious questions as to the taxpayer funds that Barry may have funneled to Forrest in the form of overseas trips and overtime payments has triggered District Attorney Glenn Funk to ask the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation to look into the matter to determine if there was–and the extent to which there may have been– any criminal wrongdoing by Metro Nashville’s chief executive.
“District Attorney Glenn Funk has asked TBI Director Mark Gwyn to investigate whether Mayor Megan Barry and/or others, including Sgt. Rob Forrest, violated any criminal law including misappropriation of public funds and official misconduct,” Funk spokesman Steve Hayslip told The Tennessean Thursday morning.
“As with any TBI investigation, agents will collect any and all relevant evidence and interviews and, in turn, submit investigative findings to the district attorney general for his further review and consideration,” TBI spokesman Josh DeVine confirmed to The Tennessean.
Meanwhile, Rob Forrest’s wife, through her attorney, requested the former security chief’s cell phone and its contents be held and preserved by the Metro Nashville Police Department. MNPD spokesperson Kris Mumford told The Tennessean that, “The phone device was collected and has been preserved.”
Fox News 17 reports Sheri Weiner, who chairs of the Metro Council Ethics Committee, is preparing to release a statement soon:
The head of Metro Council’s Ethics Committee says they are aware of what’s going on but are not not actively doing an investigation. They are, however, prepared to investigate should a formal complaint be filed. In order for the committee to do an investigation, someone must file a formal complaint of which the Metro legal department deems necessary to look in to.

Mayoral Office Statement on
Mayor Megan Barry's Travel Denies
Impropriety, Malfeasance
republished below in full unedited for informational, educational, and research purposes:

"February 5, 2018
Multiple media outlets have requested documents and asked questions related to the travel schedule of Mayor Megan Barry and Sgt. Rob Forrest. Below is a statement from Mayor Barry’s Communications Director, Sean Braisted, outlining the facts and information as best we know them at this time. We will continue compiling information and documents as requested and release them to media in a timely fashion:

“We appreciate the patience of the media and public as we have been working to compile information and records that have been requested by the media. We wanted to get the information out as quickly as possible but also as accurately as possible, and that has taken some time.

“We have been compiling expense reports, receipts, schedules, and other documents that will provide more information to those who want to know whether any taxpayer funds were used in relation to this affair.

“What the records show is this:

“Mayor Barry has never sought reimbursement for meals or other expenses related to travel. She has never sought to financially benefit from any of the travel she has taken on behalf of the city. We believe that at no time did Mayor Barry or Sgt. Forrest ever attempt to use taxpayer dollars to support their extramarital affair.

“Some of Mayor Barry’s trips were paid for by organizations or foundations that requested her attendance. Any other hotel expense or airfare paid for by Metro was for official business on behalf of the city of Nashville booked through the normal scheduling process.

“On most of the Mayor’s travel, she was with an assigned security detail. Nashville is one of the 25 largest cities in the United States of America, and many mayors throughout the country travel with security detail. Whether for a domestic or an international trip, the protective detail is responsible for advancing the Mayor at meetings and events, understanding security protocols and safe entrances and exits, and ensuring that the Mayor is able to travel safely and keep to the schedule of events. In domestic airports, the protective detail goes through the TSA U-FAN program in order to quickly move through security checkpoints while being armed.

“There were a handful of occasions when Mayor Barry stayed an extra day or two in a city where she traveled. That isn’t unusual; in fact, our tourism industry thrives on people who spend an extra day or two outside of a conference to experience a new city.

“In those few cases, Mayor Barry paid for her own hotel rooms out of personal funds or stayed with family.

“On those few occasions, Sgt. Forrest, in his capacity as the head of her security detail, also stayed those extra nights in a separate hotel room – which were paid for by Metro – because the official schedule would soon resume in that city.

“Those total four nights in 2017, and on each of those nights, Sgt. Forrest did not record on-duty hours that would have resulted in pay or overtime.

“The trips being questioned by the media are her trips to San Francisco for the NewDEAL Ideas Summit in May of 2017, her trip to Kansas City to tour soccer and transit facilities and speak with the Mayor of Kansas City concerning that city’s experiences with these projects, and a trip to Athens, Greece, as a member of the 100 Resilient Cities.

“In San Francisco, Mayor Barry arrived on Sunday for a conference that started on Tuesday after Memorial Day. She traveled early so that she wouldn’t have to travel on Memorial Day and would have time to prepare in advance for the conference. She paid for her own hotel room in San Francisco for the extra night.

“In Athens, the 100RC conference ended on Saturday, and her hotel charges were covered by the Rockefeller Foundation through Saturday night, though she did not have any official business scheduled on that day. She chose to stay one extra day – Sunday – before flying back on Monday. That extra night was funded by her own personal funds, not Metro.

“In Kansas City, Mayor Barry stayed with her mother in Overland Park, Kansas, following official business on Friday; she had a private family memorial service for her son, Max, with family in Kansas on Saturday. That flight was paid for out of personal funds.

“On those four nights without business, Sgt. Forrest had a hotel room paid for by Metro because he needed to be available on a following day for travel. While Mayor Barry paid for her own rooms, or stayed with family, Sgt. Forrest’s rooms were a legitimate business expense because of his need to help facilitate travel for the Mayor on her return home.

“We are also releasing travel schedules from 2015 and 2016.

“You will see a security detail traveled sporadically with Mayor Barry until mid-to-late 2016. This was based on the recommendations of the Police Department that Mayor Barry have police detail on all official business trips, increases in terrorist attacks and mass shootings both domestic and international, and because we had an opportunity to learn what worked best in terms of logistics for travel.

“We have not identified any days during this time period in which the Mayor stayed more than necessary for her official duties.

“To the best of our knowledge, Sgt. Forrest has not claimed overtime or other expenses beyond what was required of him in his official capacities.

“Mayor Barry’s travel was a reflection of our city’s growing prominence on a national and international stage and her desire to learn more from other Mayors and leaders on how best to implement policies and practices that would meet the needs of the people of Nashville. Sgt. Forrest’s travel was a reflection of his role as the head of the Mayor’s security detail and the person primarily responsible for the Mayor’s safety and security.

“As the Mayor has acknowledged, it was inappropriate to start and continue this relationship, but we believe that any and all expenses incurred by either Sgt. Forrest or Mayor Barry were in the course of normal business.

“We will continue to be releasing documents as they become available, and will do our best to answer questions in a timely fashion; however, we will wait to gather as many facts as necessary before commenting in the interest of accuracy.”"

Nashville mayor's son mourned after apparent drug overdose ...
Barry’s Marital Vow-Breaking Consistent with Her Oath-Breaking Hypocrisy on Guns
BY DAVID CODREA
republished below in full unedited for informational, educational, and research purposes:

USA – -(Ammoland.com)- “People that we admire can also be flawed humans, and I'm flawed, and I'm incredibly sad and sorry for the disappointment that I will see in those little girls' faces,” Nashville Mayor Megan Barry told The Tennessean Wednesday.  She was talking about being caught in an extramarital affair with the head of her security detail, a situation coinciding with his “retirement” while she still tries to keep her place at the public trough.
Tellingly, her self-serving mea culpa lets slip that she considers herself admired.

Why she should see disappointment in the faces of any little girls remains unexplained. Time was adults sheltered small children from salacious sexual details, but then again, we’re dealing with a “progressive.” Bringing that up though, along with talk of “forgiveness” and “regaining trust,” should resonate with the sob sister constituency. It should also divert attention from concerns about potential criminal conduct, questionable overtime, and solo trips with her lover — including seven days in Athens.

“But, what I hope they can also see is that people make mistakes, and you move on from those,” Barry further equivocated.  Sorry, but a mistake is when you add numbers and forget to carry over to the next column, or read the label wrong and set the oven at 350 instead of 375. Breaking your vows and betraying trust, deliberately, repeatedly and with premeditation, is a choice, and one she knew was hurtful and wrong, yet did anyway.
But it’s not the broken vows gun owners should be outraged over, except as an indicator of a petty tyrant who demands control over others yet will not exercise it over herself. What we should be concerned about is her oath, and repeatedly breaking it is also no “mistake.”
Article. VI. of “the supreme Law of the Land” mandates:
“[A]ll executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution.”
Barry took that pledge as freely as when she promised “I do.”
But while enjoying the benefits of a taxpayer-funded “four-person team in charge of keeping the mayor safe and transporting her to various functions,” Barry was an outspoken citizen disarmament zealot.
Among the infringements she’s publicly called for: Ending private sales, overturning preemption to allow a patchwork quilt of urban (Democrat) bans, opposing open carry, and keeping teachers disarmed so that schools will remain “gun-free” predator-empowerment zones.
It’s no surprise that the husband Barry cheated on for two years is also anti-gun. While he appeared to try and straddle the issue in a recent editorial, it’s clear his sentiments are with the side that disparages the “political and personal liberty” view of the Second Amendment:
“[T]he rest of us see it as a grotesque desecration of the very idea of a free and civilized society.”
“Us.”
If there’s any doubt how he really feels, a recent tweet, complete with blame-apportioning to NRA for school shootings ought to clear things up:

How can you feel sorry for the guy?
It’s ironic, but hardly surprising to observers of “progressive” cognitive dissonance, that when an anti-gun “feminist” made a conscious decision to reject one man and couple with another, she chose the one who is capable of protecting her – with a gun.
