Mike Pence, the US vice president, has said that the US will counter any North Korean attack with an "overwhelming and effective American response".
Pence sent the warning in a strong speech in Japan's capital of Tokyo as he continues his tour of Asia.
Meanwhile, the US is backtracking on claims made last week that a naval strike group was heading to waters near North Korea as a show of strength.
