The Liaison Committee -- a joint forum of B'nai B'rith World Center and the Ecumenical Theological Research Fraternity in Israel -- convened on November 5-8 a consultation to discuss anti-Israeli positions prevalent among Mainline Protestant Churches for the past twenty years and more. Twenty participants form the U.S., Canada, Germany, Netherlands, Finland, Norway, Uganda and U.K. discussed developments within their denominations on Israel and the persecution of Christians in Arab countries.
The consultation took place at a significant timing -- two weeks after seven U.S. leading Jewish organizations -- including B'nai B'rith International -- canceled a joint discussion with Protestants representatives after leaders of their denominations sent a letter to Congress accusing Israel of war crimes and calling for an end to U.S. military aid to Israel.
The opening session of the consultation included a lecture by Rabbi Shlomo Riskin, Chancellor and Founder of the Center for Jewish-Christian Understanding and Cooperation on "The State of Israel as the Fundamental Component in Jewish-Christian Relations Today" and a response from Rev. Paul Wilkinson, Ph.D., Associate Minister, Hazel Grove Full Gospel Church, England.
