The BRAIN Initiative - Unlocking the Human Mind:
Published on Apr 11, 2013
Obama announced plans for a new initiative to map the human brain- the first year's price tag is $100 million (Some sources are saying $110 million, though the number is likely to change and increase over the years of the research). There is a lot we don't understand about the human brain.
This project hopes to map the complex activity of neurons in the human brain, which is still not fully understood. It will encourage many new technologies to help in the process. The project could potentially lead to a great number of things, such as cures for neurological diseases, more jobs in the science field, and of course understanding the potential and workings of the human mind.
This is a very forward thinking initiative, whether you think it's just politicking on Obama's end or not. But will this important research be approved? Will a misunderstanding between applied science and basic science lead politicians away from the project? If the Human Genome Project is any indicator, this is a great idea not only for knowledge and health, but for the economy as well.
