Few Christians in Sudan will enjoy Christmas this year as government authorities continue to crackdown on churches and parishioners alike.

Just a week before Christmas, security forces arrested Reverend Kowa Shamaal and Reverend Hassan Abdelraheem from the Sudan Church of Christ denomination at their homes in Khartoum North and Omdurman, respectively. No reason for the arrest has been given for the two church leaders who come from the Nuba Mountain region in South Kordofan State, according to news reports.

Church demolitions

On October 17th, government officials warned the administration of the Lutheran church in Al-Thawra, Omdurman, that it will be demolished because they want to restructure the area. Without media attention except for a few Facebook posts and pleads from churchgoers, Sudanese authorities bulldozed the 33-year-old church building just three days later. “They gave us a notice that the church will be demolished after 72 hours,” said Pastor Gabriel Koko of the Omdurman Lutheran Church. Pastor Koko added that they were in the process of attempting to register the church when the demolition happened.

“The government asks you for consent from the local committee which in turn will not agree unless the higher council for Dawah and Guidance gives permission and vice versa, you are lost in the middle,” the frustrated pastor told Nuba Reports. Now parishioners worship outside in Omdurman’s blazing sun, singing hymns with the rubble of their church piled next to them. Two more churches were destroyed that month after alleged arsonists burnt down another church in Gedaref, Eastern Sudan, and security officers illegally demolished another church in Al-Thawra, Omdurman, according to human rights reports. “The Lutheran church in Gedaref was demolished by the police in 2006, then rebuilt and now burnt to ashes, nothing remains of the church which had a 300-member constituency,” said Samir Makeen, a lawyer closely involved in this case. Makeen travelled to eastern Sudan to follow-up on the case proceedings and found that the police force was largely uncooperative.

“The case file at Rowena police station cites an unknown assailant although I believe that the police can easily catch the arsonists, but they seemed unprepared to do anything regarding this case,” added Makeen who has worked on similar cases before.

South Sudan’s independence and the fate of Christianity in Sudan

The Gedaref-based church is at least the third church to be set ablaze while another four churches were demolished or partially demolished since a referendum in January 2011 that led to South Sudan’s independence from the country. Just a month before the referendum, Sudan’s President Omar Al-Bashir told supporters in Gedaref that Sudan will not be religiously diverse if South Sudan separates and the constitution will only be guided by Shariah law. “On the eve of South Sudan’s secession in July 2011, Sudanese phone users received a text message (from the state-influenced telecommunication companies) saying that Sudan is now 97% Muslim and since then we’ve felt that we don’t have a place in this country,” said Samia Joseph*, a Nuba human rights activist.

In April 2013, the Minister of Guidance and Endowments, Al-Fatih Taj El-Sir, announced in parliament that no new licenses would be granted to build churches in Sudan, citing a decrease in the mainly Christian South Sudanese population, according to news reports. While those in South Sudan started to enjoy the opportunity to practice their faith without oppression since independence in 2011, Christians in Sudan have faced greater religious persecution. Even the Christmas holiday has become challenging to celebrate. “Christmas is no longer a holiday in Sudan, Christian civil servants and students used to get three days off work, but now we can’t even celebrate Christmas properly. Last year the police stopped our celebration at four p.m.,” added Joseph. M.M., a Nuba hailing from Um-Dorein county in Southern Kordofan State and affiliated with a church in Omdurman said authorities have essentially stopped acknowledging the existence of other religions other than Islam after the 2011 secession.

“They cancelled Christian studies from public schools and many parents had to resort to the church for religious teachings,” said M.M. who insisted on using her initials to protect her security. Nabil Adib, a well renowned human rights lawyer, said that 2012 saw a sustained escalation of religious persecution in Sudan in the form of land-grabbing and demolishing of churches and mass arrests of church-related employees, including foreign and Sudanese pastors. “Since then, around 200 foreign pastors or church-affiliates were rounded up and arrested by the security apparatus and were given two choices, either leave the country and give up all belongings or continue to be detained and face charges,” said Adib adding that all of them chose the first option and fled the country.

State security’s infamous “religious security” unit have arrested dozens of Christian leaders, including five Anglican pastors in Khartoum after the Anglican Cultural Center was shut down and all the books in its spacious library were confiscated.

Land grabbing

In 2014, three churches in Khartoum states were demolished under Bashir’s zero-tolerance policy towards religious pluralism. The policy also acts as a veneer for land-grabbing opportunities with investors affiliated to the ruling National Congress Party (NCP), according to several Christian sources in the capital. The Pentecostal church on Sayed Abdel-Rahman street in Khartoum, for example, lies on a valuable and very expensive piece of land which was sold as a house in the 1990s.

Adib was involved in the land sale for the church almost two decades ago and again involved when state security took over the church land last year without recourse to the law. “We filed a constitutional case citing the illegal acquisition of the Pentecostal church without any allegations for persecution on religious basis” said Adib who added that they have received no response for almost a year now. National security currently occupy this land, one of the most expensive plots in the capital, Adib said, even confiscating personal belongings found on the land, such as cars. The Anglican Church in Khartoum North faces a similar fate after the state replaced a democratically-elected Church committee in 2014 with a government-appointed one in a bid to acquire the large Church land plot….

ROME — Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu, also known as “Mother Teresa,” will be sainted next year as she is being credited with the purported healing of two people through what Roman Catholics believe is her intercession after her death, the Vatican announced on Friday.

Jorge Bergoglio, also known as “Pope Francis,” approved a decree on Thursday that Bojaxhiu was responsible for a second miracle 11 years after she died.

The situation involved a Brazilian man who contracted a viral infection in 2008 and slipped into a coma after developing brain abscesses.

“The patient’s wife continuously sought the intercession of the Blessed Mother Teresa for her husband,” explained Brian Kolodiejchiuk, who had called for Bojaxhiu’s canonization, in a statement.

When the man was wheeled into an operating room, the arriving surgeon found him awake and asking, “What am I doing here?” He recovered, and despite being told that he would never be able to have children, his wife conceived.

The first miracle the Vatican attributed to Bojaxhiu was the healing of a cancerous tumor suffered by an Indian woman in 2003.

“[P]eople have sought her help and have experienced God’s love for them through her prayers,” Missionaries of Charity said in a statement following the declaration. “Every day, pilgrims from India and around the world come to pray at her tomb…”

In the Roman Catholic religion, in order for a person to be sainted, they must be credited with bringing about two miracles after their death through their intercession, with the exception of just one miracle for those who are martyred for their faith.

“The Holy Father has authorized the Congregation for the Causes of Saints to proclaim the decree concerning the miracle attributed to the intercession of blessed Mother Teresa,” the Vatican announced in a statement.

Bojaxhiu won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her work among the poor. She is known for her humanitarianism on the streets of Calcutta, India in founding the Missionaries of Charity.

“Mother Teresa” died in 1997 at the age of 87, and was beatified by Pope John Paul II. Beatification is “a recognition accorded by the Catholic Church of a dead person’s entrance into Heaven and capacity to intercede on behalf of individuals who pray in his or her name.”

However, Mike Gendron of Proclaiming the Gospel Ministries in Plano, Texas, told Christian News Network that the concept that one can be responsible for a miracle after their death is unbiblical, as well as the notion that the dead can intercede for the living.

“According to Scripture, a miracle originates from God and He performs them to arouse people’s awe and wonder and to bear witness of Himself. The miracles God performs cannot usually be explained by natural causes,” he explained. “When we study miracles in the Bible we see that they consistently point people to the one true God and Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.”

“Miracles supposedly done through the intercession of dead Catholics do not meet these biblical principles,” Gendron continued. “They do not glorify God or point people to Christ, but instead bring glory to the dead Catholic ‘saint’ and point people away from Christ as the only mediator between God and man.”

The former Roman Catholic-turned-evangelist also noted that the practice of a theological leader “sainting” certain individuals does not line up with Scripture.

“God is the only one who can convert a sinner to a saint,” he said. “Saints are the ones God has sanctified or set apart in Christ Jesus (1 Cor. 1:2). Of all the references to saints in the Scriptures we see they are alive both physically and spiritually.”

In regard to Bojaxhiu being honored by the Vatican, Gendron said that the selection is wrongful as she did not believe in evangelizing those of other religions, but rather had a Universalist mindset.

“[H]er theology embraced a works-righteousness salvation and she saw no need to evangelize. She encouraged Hindus, Muslims and Buddhists to be better Hindus, Muslims and Buddhists,” he said. “She never pointed people to Christ as the only savior, mediator and redeemer. Instead she taught a bizarre ‘pseudo-pantheism’ in which she believed Jesus was present in everyone.”

In her book “Life in the Spirit: Reflections, Meditations and Prayers,” Boxjaxhiu wrote, “We never try to convert those who receive [aid from Missionaries of Charity] to Christianity, but in our work we bear witness to the love of God’s presence, and if Catholics, Protestants, Buddhists, or agnostics become for this, better men — simply better — we will be satisfied.”

“It matters to the individual what church he belongs to. If that individual thinks and believes that this is the only way to God for her or him, this is the way God comes into their life — his life. If he does not know any other way and if he has no doubt so that he does not need to search, then this is his way to salvation,” she stated.

MOTHER TERESA SET FOR SAINTHOOD

    With the declaration that a second miracle has occurred, Pope Francis had given clearance for Mother Teresa to be canonized next September, the 19th anniversary of her death. Sainthood requires the documentation of two miracles attributed to the deceased individual. The first, in 1998, was the cure of a stomach tumor in an Indian woman. Though the bishop declared this a miracle performed by the dead nun, the woman’s husband said he believed that medicine had cured his wife. The second case, in 2008, was the “inexplicable” recovery of a Brazilian man who woke from a coma after his wife prayed to the dead nun. 
    By her own admission, Mother Teresa found only darkness in her spiritual life and practice. This is documented in the shocking book Mother Teresa: Come Be My Light, the Private Writings of the Saint of Calcutta (2007), which contains statements made by the nun to her confessors and superiors over a period of more than 65 years. In March 1953, she wrote to her confessor: “... THERE IS SUCH TERRIBLE DARKNESS WITHIN ME, as if everything was dead. It has been like this more or less from the time I started ‘the work.’” In 1979 she wrote: “THE SILENCE AND THE EMPTINESS IS SO GREAT -- that I look and do not see, -- Listen and do not hear.” 
    Her private statements about the spiritual darkness she encountered in contemplative prayer continued in this vein until her death, and they are the loudest possible warning about the danger of the Catholic contemplative mysticism which is sweeping through evangelicalism. Contemplative practices, such as the Jesus Prayer, breath prayers, visualizing prayer, centering prayer, and lectio divina are exceedingly dangerous. They are vehicles to bring practitioners into contact with demons. Many who practice these things end up believing in a pagan concept of God such as pantheism (God is everything) and panentheism (God is in everything). Through these practices people typically become increasingly ecumenical and interfaith in thinking. A TRUE SAINT

The Roman Catholic doctrine of sainthood proves its heretical nature. Nowhere do we find Christians in the New Testament churches praying to saints. The Bible instructs us to pray to God the Father through Jesus Christ, the one Mediator between God and men (1 Tim. 2:5). To pray to a mere man or woman is blasphemy. In the New Testament the term “saint” is applied to all born again Christians, not to a special class of deceased Christians. See Acts 9:13, 32, 41; 26:10; Rom. 8:27; 12:13; 15:25, 31; 16:2, 15; 1 Cor. 6:1, 2; 14:33; 16:1, 15; 2 Cor. 8:4; 9:1, 12; 13:13; Eph. 1:1; Phil. 1:1; Col. 1:2, 4; Phile. 7; Heb. 6:10; 13:24. Even the carnal Christians at Corinth are called saints (2 Cor. 1:1). Born again Christians are not saints because they are sinless and special; they are saints because they have a sinless Savior and He has removed their sin before God (Rev. 1:5, 6; 1 Pet. 2:9, 10). In the sight of God, through Jesus Christ, the believer is “holy and unblameable and unreproveable” (Col. 1:22). This is why we can be called saints. Praise the Lord’s holy name!

Is Mother Teresa Qualified to Be a Saint?

Mother Teresa, who dedicated her life to helping India's poor, will be made a saint by the Roman Catholic Church after a second miracle was attributed to her. In the Roman Catholic religion, in order for a person to be sainted, they must be credited with bringing about two miracles after their death through their intercession.

Mike's Comment: The widespread perception that Mother Teresa sought to relieve the suffering of the poor was the furthest thing from the truth. She believed suffering would help the poor make satisfaction for their sins. This is consistent with Roman Catholic theology which declares the sinner must "make satisfaction for" or "expiate" his sins by doing penance (Catechism of the Catholic Church, para. 1459). At the end of her life, Mother Teresa doubted the existence of God and heaven. In her private letters she wrote: "Lord, my God, you have thrown [me] away as unwanted and unloved. I call, I cling, I want, and there is no one to answer, no, no one. Where is my faith? There is nothing, I have no faith."

Yet in spite of her lack of faith and her rejection of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the pope will declare her a saint. Read more of Mike's comments in his interview with Christian News Network.

Billy Graham’s Muslims Are ‘Saved’ Remarks

Remarks from Billy Graham asserting that Muslims and those of other religions who “turn to the only light they have” without consciously trusting Christ are saved—despite clear warning in Scripture—have come back to light after his son Franklin Graham, the president of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA), expressed disagreement with a Wheaton professor who contends that Christians and Muslims worship the same God.

As previously reported, associate professor Larycia Hawkins posted to Facebook two photos of herself wearing a hijab earlier this month, and stated in a lengthy explanation that she plans to wear it everywhere she goes during the Advent—including at the professedly Christian college and to church.

“I stand in human solidarity with my Muslim neighbor because we are formed of the same primordial clay, descendants of the same cradle of humankind—a cave in Sterkfontein, South Africa that I had the privilege to descend into to plumb the depths of our common humanity in 2014,” Hawkins wrote.

She said that not only does she have a common ancestry with Muslims, but that Christians and Muslims worship the same God.

“I stand in religious solidarity with Muslims because they, like me, a Christian, are people of the book,” Hawkins asserted. “And as Pope Francis stated last week, we worship the same God.”

In light of controversy over the matter, the professor was suspended by university officials and placed under review. Some Wheaton students protested her suspension, calling for Hawkins to be reinstated.

Franklin Graham, the son of Billy Graham, who graduated from Wheaton in 1943, expressed dismay over Hawkins’ actions and statements in a social media post on Wednesday.

“Can you believe this Wheaton College professor who says she’s going to wear a hijab for the holidays this year to show solidarity with Islam? Shame on her!” he wrote.

“She said that Muslims and Christians worship the same God. Well she is absolutely wrong—she obviously doesn’t know her Bible and she doesn’t know Islam,” Graham continued. “The God of the Bible has a Son named Jesus Christ. The god of Islam doesn’t have a son, and even the thought of that would be sacrilegious to Muslims. The God of the Bible sent His Son to earth to die in our place and save us from our sins.”

Graham’s remarks come in contrast to those made by his father in 1997 while being interviewed on Robert Schuller’s “Hour of Power.” During the segment, Graham stated that Muslims and those of other religions may be saved without hearing of Christ or reading the Scriptures in realizing that they “need something,” although not pinpointing what it is.

“I think that everybody that loves Christ or knows Christ—whether they’re conscious of it or not, they’re members of the Body of Christ,” Billy Graham said. “And that’s what God is doing today. He’s calling people out of the world for His name.”

“Whether they come from the Muslim world, or the Buddhist world, or the Christian world, or the non-believing world, they are members of the Body of Christ because they’ve been called by God,” Graham continued. “They may not even know the name of Jesus, but they know in their heart that they need something that they don’t have, and they turn to the only light that they have.”

“And I think that they are saved, and that they’re going to be with us in Heaven,” he declared.

Schuller then sought clarification on Graham’s remarks.

“What I hear you saying that it’s possible for Jesus Christ to come into human hearts and soul and life, even if they’ve been born in darkness and have never had exposure to the Bible. Is that a correct interpretation of what you’re saying?” he asked.

“Yes, it is, because I believe that,” Graham replied. “I’ve met people in various parts of the world in tribal situations, that they have never seen a Bible or heard about a Bible, and never heard of Jesus, but they’ve believed in their hearts that there was a God, and they’ve tried to live a life that was quite apart from the surrounding community in which they lived.”

In 2005, when asked by talk show host Larry King if Muslims and others will go to Heaven even though they don’t believe in Christ, Graham replied, “That’s in God’s hands. I can’t be the judge.”

“How do you feel when you see a lot of these strong Christian leaders go on television and say, ‘You are condemned. You will live in Hell if you do not accept Jesus Christ,’ and they are forceful and judgmental?” King asked.

“Well, they have a right to say that, and they are true to a certain extent, but I don’t — that’s not my calling,” Graham replied. “My calling is to preach the love of God and the forgiveness of God and the fact that He does forgive us. … [Y]ou can get off on all kinds of different side trends, and in my earlier ministry, I did the same, but as I got older, I guess I became more mellow and more forgiving and more loving.”

Efforts to obtain comment from the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association as to whether Graham still holds to the belief have been unsuccessful, and Franklin Graham has likewise not addressed concerns over the matter. However, in the past, representatives have reportedly pointed to an article published in Decision Magazine in the 1960s, which outlined Graham’s viewpoint on the issue.

Franklin Graham raised concern in 2012 for removing language from the association’s website referring to Mormonism as a cult.

TODD BENTLEY RAISING THE DEAD 

(Friday Church News Notes, December 25, 2015, www.wayoflife.org fbns@wayoflife.org, 866-295-4143) - Todd Bentley, the discredited healing evangelist of “Lakeland Outpouring” infamy, is back at it. Now he claims to be raising the dead in Pakistan. A “healing” crusade in Karachi was allegedly attended by 500,000 Muslims, 290,000 of whom “accepted Christ as their Saviour.” The highlight, though, was the raising from the dead of three people, including a boy who had been dead for “20 minutes.” In a YouTube clip, Bentley says, “The Archbishop over the Anglican, Presbyterian and Methodist churches of Pakistan was on the platform. And he came like the Pope himself to Pakistan to welcome us into the country” (“Controversial Evangelist,” Christian Post, Dec. 18, 2015). Bentley was the “evangelist” of a Pentecostal healing “revival” at Ignite Church in Lakeland, Florida, in 2008, where he made all sorts of outrageous claims, such as a man being able to see out of a glass eye. His ministry was unable to document any of the healing miracles. After weeks of hoopla, the meeting shut down when it was learned that Bentley had an “unhealthy relationship” with a female staffer and was engaged in “excessive drinking.” He subsequently divorced his wife and married the staffer. Bentley’s meetings have a sideshow feel with raucous music and the grossly-tattooed “evangelist” crying out, “Come and get some,” and “[Miracles are] popping like popcorn.” He claims to know what is happening in the audience, calling out things like, “Someone’s getting a new spinal cord tonight.” He “flings” the Spirit upon people while weirdly yelling, “blah, blah, blah, blah.” “Holy laughter,” spiritual drunkenness, violent shaking, and “falling under the power” are an integral part of the “revival.” Bentley claims to have seen many angels, including “financial angels” who spread prosperity to him and those who attend his meetings. One of his angels is named “Emma,” though there are no female angels in Scripture. My friends, God is not dead, but He has given us clear instructions in Scripture about healing. If someone is sick, he is to call the elders of the church and confess any sins, and they are to anoint him with oil and pray over him (James 5:13-16). This assumes, first, that the individual is born again through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ. It assumes, second, that he or she is a member of a Bible-believing church. James 5 does not describe a “healing crusade.” We believe in divine healing for today through prayer, but we don’t believe in Pentecostal showmen. German government cracks down on dissent against migrant influx

The German government and Facebook are working with an organization led by an ex-Stasi agent to oversee a new program that will identify “xenophobic” posts made on the social networking website and punish people who make them with fines and jail sentences.

The German Minister of Justice Heiko Maas met with Facebook this week to form a special task force that will work to remove comments from the website that “call for hatred” against migrants.

The organization will be overseen by Network Against Nazis (Netz gegen Nazis), a group led by left-wing activist Anetta Kahane.

Although Kahane now describes herself as an “anti-racist,” she was intimately involved in another dark period of German history, working as a Stasi informant under the codename “Victoria” from 1974-1982.

The Stasi, which liaised with the Soviet KGB, was the official secret police of the former Communist government of East Germany. Its role was to spy on the population and to use its vast network of informants to hunt down political dissidents. Numerous Stasi members were prosecuted for their crimes after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.

Last week, Chancellor Angela Merkel vowed to tackle “racist” comments made on social media sites, describing them as “sedition” and demanding that Facebook take action.

“25 years after the German reunification, former DDR citizens, along with their West German brothers and sisters, are to be monitored by former Stasi cadres,” notes the German website PI News.

A report in Bild also confirms that ‘Network Against Nazis’, led by Kahane, will be involved in monitoring Facebook for “racist” and “xenophobic” comments, as well as “refugee-baiting” remarks.

Those found guilty will be hit with fines of around €5000 euros or 120 days in prison.

While European governments roll out the red carpet to potentially millions of future migrants, authorities are cracking down on dissent. Last week, an anti-migrant demonstration set to be held in Warsaw was banned on the grounds that it was “driven by out-of-place hatred.”

Anti-migrant sentiment is building across Europe, partly as a result of the mainstream media’s failure to report on the negative impact that the influx of unassimilated foreigners will bring, as is documented in the video below.

This clampdown on Facebook free speech is now one of the German government’s highest priorities following a meeting between between Angela Merkel and Mark Zuckerburg, and means that henceforth all criticism of the immigrant invasion will be severely curtailed. Such a vast initiative will need an army of loyal and trusted functionaries, and who better but Ms Kahane and her Network Against Nazis.  (“Netz gegen Nazis”) to show they mean business.  Just to make sure ordinary Germans get the message the government have charged the leader of the dissident PEGIDA movement for anti-immigrant comments he made on Facebook.

In the lucrative anti-racism sector, Anetta Kahane is without doubt a shrewd and far-seeing  operator. She recognised earlier than most that there were huge amounts of money to be had by re-packaging ordinary people’s concerns about immigration into “Neo-Nazi” scares, and she worked hard to ramp up this industry and turn it into the money-making machine that it is today.



“Neo-Nazis”


Like so many Jewish leaders in Europe these days, Kahane is quite brazen in expressing her wish for the destruction of White Europe. “You have to really change the policy of immigration inside Europe. This is very important; you have to change the educational system and the self-understanding of the states. They are not only white anymore or only Swedish or only Portuguese or only German. They are multicultural places in the world.”

It was her founding of an organisation called the Amadeu Antonio Foundation in 1998  that has been her springboard to fame. This well-funded outfit aims to smear and defame all White resistance to immigration as “neo-Nazi” and works closely with magazines such as Stern and Die Welt  to that end. Modelled after the Stephen Lawrence campaign in the UK, it receives lavish funding from the German government, the EU and a host of international NGOs including the Ford Foundation.

Her work has earned her a huge profile, and she is frequently sought out by the media for her views. She is not slow to oblige. Except, perhaps, when it comes to one matter.

This is her role as a collaborator for the Stasi or East German Ministry of State Security between 1974 and 1982.  From the age of nineteen, Kahane — codename: “Victoria” — was an enthusiastic informer or inoffiziele Mitarbeiter (IM) and submitted monthly secret reports on the political reliability of dozens of fellow students, journalists, actors and writers she mixed with.



The Stasi


Her own file shows her controller considered her to be zealous and reliable. Her role as a trusted informant in the state apparatus meant privileges denied to ordinary East Germans such as foreign travel. At the East German embassy in Mozambique she worked as a translator and informed on her colleagues there. She was paid in money and “gifts” for her services.

Collaborators like Kahane wielded a terrible power.  The spraying of graffiti or even written criticism of the regime could result in years of imprisonment and hard labour. A wrong word out of place and a career could be blighted forever.

She was far from the only one. John Koehler, author of The Stasi, estimates that if part-time collaborators were included, there could have been one for every 6.5 citizens, far more than were used in Nazi Germany. Only North Korea has imposed a comparable level of surveillance over its citizens.

Another prominent East German Jew was also unmasked as a Stasi IM informant. His name is Gregor Gysi; TOO readers may remember the YouTube video of this man gloating at the prospect of the race-replacement of Germans by immigrant invaders. (See also this article by Max Blumenthal, a critic of Israel. Blumenthal writes that Gysi “felt compelled to engineer the campaign to suppress our speech.” White advocating the destruction of ethnic Germany, Gysi is nothing if not a Jewish patriot.)





After reunification, Gysi tried to persuade the former Soviet authorities to hide or destroy the Stasi files identifying collaborators like himself. Ultimately he failed, but he has since fought a vigorous legal battle to suppress discussion of his time as a Stasi informant. He has bounced back from this humiliation, and today is the leader of the left-wing Die Linke (“The Link”), Germany’s third largest party.

As with Anette Kahane, Gregor Gysi enjoyed a privileged upbringing as the offspring of a senior Jewish Communist Party apparatchik. Gysi’s father Klaus was a member of the Politburo and a close friend of East German leader Erich Honecker. Klaus Gysi enjoyed a number of senior foreign postings including ambassador to the Vatican.

And they were far from the only ones. German Jews flocked to East Germany after the war and many enjoyed a rapid rise through the Party machinery. As in the Soviet Union in the early decades and throughout Eastern Europe after World War II (e.g., Poland; see here, p. 66), Jews became prominent in the security police. An infamous example is Colonel General Marcus Wolfe, chief of the Stasi’s foreign espionage directorate.

Jews were important cogs in the apparatus of communist oppression because they were not ethnically German and thought by Moscow to be therefore more trustworthy. It was a role for which there are many historic parallels — the Jews as loyal overseer for a foreign ruler, over a sullen, unwilling population.

After the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, there was a huge cry for justice against the communists. But the pursuit of this justice was a halting affair. Many of the guilty escaped punishment as their cases became stalled and abandoned. This is in stark comparison with what happened at the end of World War II when the East Germans arrested so many of their own citizens they had to re-open or establish eleven concentration camps including Buchanwald and Sacksenhausen.



When the wall fell


In the five years after 1945 some 160,000 Germans disappeared into these camps. Of these about 65,000 died, 36,000 were shipped to the Soviet Union, and 36,000 were freed.

For though many Jews obviously enjoyed a privileged existence in the former East Germany, they now insist their lives were blighted by an anti-Semitism every bit as bad as anywhere else.

As far as Anetta Kahane is concerned, in East Germany she was a victim too, forced to conceal or bury her Jewish identity. But in fact socialist dogma frowned on all as an outmoded construct that belonged in the dustbin of history.

Kahane typifies the deceptive and often self-deceptive nature of Jewish identification under communism (see above link, passim), noting “My parents were Marxist-Leninists and had nothing to do with religion. But my father liked to talk about his grandparents, which was for him the romantic side of Judaism.” But here is a curious paradox — where religion in submerged, ethnic identity typically remained intact. For while many Jews pled persecution, they seem to have had no problem pursuing specifically Jewish ethnic causes and preoccupations.

Kahane’s father, the famous journalist Max Kahane, is a case in point. He covered the case of Adolf Eichmann, the alleged Nazi war criminal. Institutional East German “anti-Semitism” did not stop him from covering this story from beginning to end and journeying from Argentina to the trial itself in Israel.

Another Stasi IM collaborator was the head of East Berlin’s Jewish Community Dr. Peter Kirchner. Although publicly a strong supporter of Israel, he was also an informant, known to his controller as “Burg.”  He does not seem to have suffered.

Jewish historian and documentary filmmaker Helmut Eshwege is yet another. Throughout his time in the GDR he was a vocal supporter of Israel, and in his autobiography, claimed to have suffered greatly from anti-Semitism. It’s a shame that in this book he did not feel able to write about his role as a Stasi informant called “Ferdinand,” which was revealed afterwards.   (At his last meeting  with his controllers on 15 November, 1989 he handed over the constitution of the new left-wing party which was to replace the communists).

There are numerous similar examples. Take Kahane and Gysi’s old comrade, distinguished writer Stefan Heym. Having sat out the war safely in the United States he returned to East Germany and a distinguished writer’s position, as a fanatical cheerleader for the regime. After the death of Stalin he wrote of how the murderer of tens of millions was “the most loved man of our times.” After reunification he lost no time in rediscovering his Jewish victimhood card. In 1995 he said “the political climate is very similar to that of 1933, and this frightens me.”

So where was the East German anti-Semitism?  The more this issue is teased out, the more it seems obvious that Jews were not singled out for persecution but at the same time were not given the special status they felt they deserved as the self-styled “pre-eminent victims” of the Holocaust. In East Germany it was taught that it was communists who were singled out by the Nazis.

Two East German policies, in particular, grated with Jews and have been

described as Anti-semitism.  One was the GDR’s refusal to recognise Israel — which was consistent with their position of opposing US-backed colonial power.

The second was East Germany’s refusal to pay Holocaust reparations. While

Israel received vast subventions and armaments from West Germany after

1945, the East refused to pay a dime. This infuriated the Jews who ascribed both these positions to “anti-Semitism.”

Both Anette Kahane and Gregor Gysi have made an effortless transformation into pillars of the new progressive Germany and have achieved great success.  They both shrugged off their past as “informers” and prefer to concentrate on the present and how the stain on German society can only be removed by the mass immigration of alien hordes from the Middle East.

The eradication of White Germany is not their only enthusiasm. They are both tireless defenders of Israel and are quite willing to hound and harass and purge not just their own left-wing comrades, but even other Jews who do not toe the line.

Gysi declared Anti-Zionism can no longer be an acceptable position for the left in general, and the Die Linke party in particular. He has echoed the words of Angela Merkel in saying that “solidarity with Israel” as an essential component of Germany’s “reason of state.”

He has led campaigns against fellow Die Linke members accused of supporting the BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) campaign against Israel and also of those who joined the Free Gaza Flotilla. His campaigns have been successful and resulted in cancelled speaking engagements and withdrawn bookings for “Holocaust Industry” author Norman Finkelstein and Israel critic Illan Pappe, both notable dissident Jews.

As for Anetta Kahane, what effect did her reports have on the lives of the people she denounced?  A good example might have been the talented young actor Klaus Brasch who, together with his brother Thomas, met Kahane in 1976.

Her confidential report on them contained the following sentence. “The enemies of the GDR primarily include Klaus Brasch and Thomas Brasch.” It would be interesting to ask Klaus Brasch about the effects that Kahane’s reports had on their careers but sadly that is not possible. Thomas Brasch died of a heart attack in 2001.  His brother Klaus died from an overdose in 1980.
