Last week, Jordan’s King Abdullah II, in what has been described as a “sharp tone,” announced that he would annul an appendix to the 1994 Israeli/Jordanian peace treaty under which certain parcels of lands in the border regions –– the Naharayim (Baqura) area near the Sea of Galilee, and Zofar (al Ghamar), some 80 miles north of Eilat in the Aqaba region –– were to have been leased to Israel in perpetuity.
Jews have farmed these lands since 1926, when the then-British Mandatory power authorized it, along with the establishment of a power station by Pinchas Rutenberg.
However, in 1994, when Israel and Jordan concluded a peace treaty, Israel transferred these territories to Jordanian sovereignty. However, Appendix I (b) in the treaty authorized continued Israeli cultivation of these farmlands for 25 years, automatically renewable for 25-year periods “unless one year prior notice of termination is given by either Party, in which case, at the request of either Party, consultations shall be entered into.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has indicated he will be taking up the matter with King Abdullah in a bid to have the termination of the lease rescinded, but Oraib Rintawi, the director of the Quds Center for Political Studies in Amman, has said, probably accurately, “Jordan cannot backtrack on this … This is a decision of the king, government and public. I do not believe there is any possibility to backtrack on this decision.”
Abdullah’s sudden and unexpected announcement, following public demonstrations in Jordan and a letter signed by 80 Jordanian legislators urging the cancellation of the appendix, illustrates two issues that are easily and indeed routinely overlooked when considering Israeli negotiations with neighboring Arab interlocutors:
- The intense hostility to, and non-acceptance of, Israel by Arab societies; and
- The undergirding problem that bedevils all such negotiations with the Palestinian Arabs –– the inadmissibility under sharia of relinquishing lands once controlled by Muslim powers and thus deemed a waqf (a perpetual Islamic trust) to non-Muslims.
Abdullah’s decision to terminate the leases next year rather than renewing them is a strong indicator of the first. It is well-known that Abdullah has been continually pressured within Jordan to do whatever he can to distance himself from Israel and even to abrogate the entire peace treaty.
This development illustrates starkly the huge mistake that can be made when Israel makes generous concessions to an Arab party under the misapprehension that the personal friendliness of an Arab interlocutor –– in this case, the late Jordanian King Hussein –– is something that is somehow guaranteed to endure even under a stable regime.
In this case, Israel fatefully waived its claim to sovereignty, no doubt thinking its territorial generosity would help to entrench and secure the original peace agreement.
Instead, what we now see is that another Jordanian king, who does not share the reputed friendliness of his father towards Israel and who has different priorities, can simply terminate the lease. Other than appealing to him to change his mind, it would seem that Israel has limited power to alter the Jordanian decision.
To the objection that the Israeli peace treaties with Egypt and Jordan give the lie to the assertion that secure treaties cannot be achieved with Palestinian Arab interlocutors, it bears recalling that, in both cases, neither country was required to relinquish lands once controlled by Muslims.
To the contrary, by signing the Camp David peace treaty in 1979, Egypt secured the return to its control of the entire Sinai peninsula, giving only a chilly, mean-spirited peace in return. Egyptian President Anwar Sadat refused to countenance even the smallest territorial concession to Israel.
In the case of Jordan, Hussein was able to sign a peace with Israel because he had already relinquished his claim to the West Bank (Judea/Samaria) in favor of Yasser Arafat’s PLO, as a result of which no territorial claims were at issue. Indeed, the only land at issue seems to have been these farmlands, which the treaty secured to Jordanian sovereignty.
The issue therefore changes character when it comes to Israeli/Palestinian negotiations. Here, Israeli governments, irrespective of their political complexion, are seeking agreements which would formalize the legitimacy of Israeli control over at least some territory previously controlled by Muslim powers and thus regarded as a waqf.
Muslim governments might bow to force majeure, knowing that they cannot dislodge Israel for the present, just as they cannot dislodge Spain from Andalusia or India from Kashmir.
These territories lost to Islam are, as it were, on the back-burner, issues to be fought another day and only the more radical Muslim movements speak of them at present or launch attacks on account of them. But the territories conquered by Israeli in 1967 are not seen in such terms and the whole world deems them to be negotiable.
Accordingly, Mahmoud Abbas and the Palestinian Authority (PA), have never agreed to normalize an Israeli presence even an inch beyond the 1949 armistice lines. This is why the most generous peace proposals in 2000 and again in 2008, encompassing full Palestinian statehood, a capital in the eastern half of Jerusalem, sovereignty even over Jerusalem’s Temple Mount (Judaism’s holiest site), ten of billions of dollars in aid to resettle refugees and their descendants, and Israeli withdrawal from virtually all — but not absolutely all –– of the territory have not met even with a PA counter-offer, let alone acceptance.
King Abdullah’s announcement is a sober reminder of these realities which can only be overcome by an undoubtedly slow, gradual, global process of change and reform in Muslim society. Sadly, this means that a genuine, formalized Israeli/Palestinian peace will remain elusive for the foreseeable future.

That may sound like President Trump at one of his rallies but it’s actually the headline of an October 19 Fresno Bee story by award-winning reporter Yesenia Amaro. “MS-13 carved out a reign of terror,” she writes, “resulting in at least 14 brutal murders in and around Mendota from 2015 to 2017.” Amaro charts how this reign of terror developed, and the bloodshed MS-13 has inflicted.
“MS-13 slipped into Mendota relatively unnoticed,” Amaro notes, and “few people outside the rural town in California’s Central Valley knew MS-13 had infiltrated the area at least a decade ago.” This was not only due to relative obscurity of Mendota, with a population of some 11,000. When the gang ramped up the violence, “there was little or no media coverage on some of the murders, some of which had been initially labeled as suspicious deaths.”
Along with the gang’s extortion, kidnapping and drug trafficking, the killings “kept nearly everyone quiet, including city leaders, who failed to sound the alarm.” Even after the 25 MS-13 arrests, Mendota Mayor Rolando Castro declined to comment for Amaro’s story “citing fears for himself and his family.” Other residents spoke only on condition of anonymity, “citing fear of gang reprisals” such as the one involving Joanna Soloria Maya.
In July, 2016, before she was slated to testify in a murder case, “Joanna was hacked to death” and her body left outside an apartment complex. As Amaro noted, MS-13 has an international reputation for “brazenly leaving the bloodied, mangled corpses in the open.” Joanna’s sister Jannette told Amaro, “they are killing people out there, like they are animals.” And the MS-13 campaign of violence is “going to get worse” because law enforcement “can’t stop it.”
One longtime Mendota resident, afraid to identify himself, told Amaro the town is now called the “La Colonia SalvadoreƱa,” the Salvadoran colony. That raises the back stories of the gang’s reign of terror.
As Amaro explains, MS-13 members “are from El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala and other parts of Central and South America.” Before they quietly infiltrated Mendota, they entered the United States illegally, defying federal immigration law and easily evading the border patrol.
Federal officials led the charge in the recent arrests of 25 MS-13 members. At a Fresno press conference, Assistant Attorney General Brian A. Benczkowski said “the dismantling MS-13 and other violent gangs that terrorize our streets will remain a top priority of the Department of Justice.” For California’s ruling Democrats, on the other hand, MS-13 has not been a priority.
At the Fresno press conference, California Attorney General Xavier Becerra said “I don’t know if you would call them human beings,” referring to those who main and scar their victims. Becerra added that his operations were not based on “labels” and the arrests were not based on “status,” only “criminal conduct.”
Once on Hillary Clinton’s short list as a running mate, Becerra supports California’s sanctuary state law that protects even criminal illegals from deportation. Governor Jerry Brown, who also supports the sanctuary law, is on record that “Donald Trump is lying on immigration, lying about crime and lying about the laws of California.”
The Fresno MS-13 bust prompted no statement from the recurring governor, a three-time failed contender for president of the United States with a reputation of being soft on crime. Brown recently signed Senate Bill 1391, which forbids the prosecution of criminals ages 14-18 in adult court, whatever the gravity of their crime.
Under this law, any MS-13 member under 18 could hack Joanna Maya to death and serve only until age 25, in a comfy juvenile facility. This gives MS-13 new incentives to set up shop in California, where criminal illegals enjoy protected status.
ICE is the front-line force against MS-13 but Tani Cantil-Sakauye, chief justice of the California Supreme Court, has accused ICE of “stalking” criminal illegals in courthouses. California senator and 2020 presidential hopeful Kamala Harris is notably hostile to ICE and other Democrats want to abolish the federal agency.
The recent MS-13 bust prompted no statement from California Democrat Nancy Pelosi. In May of 2017, after President Trump denounced the gang’s bestial attacks, Pelosi invoked their “spark of divinity” as well as their “dignity and worth.”
For Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the murderous MS-13 campaign prompted no call for deportation of violent gang members or tougher border enforcement. And like many leading Democrats, former First Lady Hillary Clinton dreams of open borders.
Meanwhile, the massive caravan now marching toward the United States also favors open borders. President Trump says the caravan includes terrorists and MS-13 members, who as Yesenia Amaro notes, come from El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala and other parts of Central and South America.
When these criminal foreign nationals slip unnoticed into American communities they hack to death people like Joanna Maya and impose a reign of terror. So in a real sense, these criminal illegals are terrorists. As the Fresno Bee headline said, “MS-13 is like no other gang.”

After a Republican Party headquarters in Volusia County, Florida was shot up, the media reported the incident as an act of “vandalism”.
The windows of the HQ were shot out Monday morning and four bullet holes were found inside the office. The attack was almost certainly politically motivated because no other business on the strip was targeted.
“At this point we can confirm that at least four rounds were fired into the building,” said South Daytona police Capt. Mark Cheatham. “We are working to see if we can get video from nearby businesses but so far we have no witnesses.”

The incident occurred hot on the heels of a South Florida man being arrested for sending dud pipe bombs in the mail to top Democrats, but what little media attention it has received downplayed the shooting as an act of vandalism.
The Daytona Beach News-Journal reported the shocking incident as a mere act of “vandalism,” equating it with graffiti.

Billionaire globalist George Soros used State Department resources and taxpayer funds to advance his leftist political activities, including influencing migration policy, according to documents obtained by Judicial Watch earlier this year.
The 32 pages of records show the Obama administration sent U.S. taxpayer money to Soros-backed groups in Albania to fund his subversive political activity, and that he assisted the State Department in deciding how to allocate taxpayer funds for certain grants.
The documents obtained through Judicial Watch’s FOIA lawsuit reveal the mechanism by which Soros-backed groups are able to organize efforts like the migrant caravans through groups like Pueblos Sin Fronteras, and the leftist coalition known as CARA.
Additionally, leaked 2016 documents from Soros’ Open Society Foundation, titled “Migration Governance and Enforcement Portfolio Review,” show close ties between his NGO and the United Nations’ migration representative Peter Sutherland related to facilitating mass migration, including shaping international migration policy.
“IMI’s [Open Society International Migration Initiative] access to the Sutherland team’s discussions has allowed us to keep civil society partners up-to-date on the latest developments, in order to inform advocacy and campaigning strategies prior to the events and to plan follow up actions,” the leaked document states.
The Soros document goes on to claim the cozy relationship with Sutherland has “set the stage for institutional reforms to global migration governance, and to break new ground on protections for migrants outside the asylum system,” meaning unfettered protection for migrants regardless of asylum criteria.
Together, these documents paint a picture of how Soros-backed NGOs and the UN are quarterbacking the migrant caravans funneling their way to the U.S. southern border, such as logistics-planning, food and water distribution, and media outreach.
This is why the globalists pulled the “Lou Dobbs Tonight” episode featuring Judicial Watch Director Chris Farrell, resulting in his permanent ban from Fox News and an apology from the network, absurdly claiming his rhetoric was antisemitic.
Farrell clearly outlined how Soros, evidenced by the above documents, allocates taxpayer funds from the State Department to his NGOs to push his far-left political agenda of creating a borderless utopia.
And that’s why he had to be silenced.

Tuesday is the day President Trump will announce his plan to stop the migrant invasion force heading north through Mexico toward the U.S. border.
According to the Washington Post, the officials are still nailing down the details.
But others are working on plans, too. Leftists are gearing up, as The New American reported last week, to file border-busting lawsuits that will stop the president from deporting the illegal aliens.
Rather than claim the president doesn’t have the authority to declare some immigrants ineligible, the anti-American legal front will claim the migrants are seeking asylum and have a right to apply for it. That would tie up their deportation in the court system.
Of course, the “migrants,” many of whom have openly said they’re coming to work, know this, and will, if necessary, act accordingly by lying to border authorities.
Tuesday Order, Leftist Legal Challenge
The anti-Trump, leftist media reported last week that the president will close the border with his authority under the Immigration and Nationality Ac and as laid out in the U.S. Code:
Whenever the President finds that the entry of any aliens or of any class of aliens into the United States would be detrimental to the interests of the United States, he may by proclamation, and for such period as he shall deem necessary, suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens as immigrants or nonimmigrants, or impose on the entry of aliens any restrictions he may deem to be appropriate.
Trump will divulge the plan Tuesday in a major speech, the Post reported:
President Trump is preparing to announce a sweeping border crackdown in a speech Tuesday, a week before the midterm elections, in which he is expected to invoke emergency powers to stop migrants from entering the United States and depict them as a grave national security threat, administration officials said Friday.
Trump is considering steps that would bar migrants from crossing the border and deny them a chance to apply for asylum in the United States, measures that legal scholars and immigrant rights groups say would contravene U.S. laws and international treaties, likely triggering challenges in federal court.
The question is whether the order can stand up in court.
According to a former U.S. federal prosecutor, as TNA reported, Trump has the authority to close the border. And the U.S. Supreme Court upheld that authority in ruling Trump did indeed have the authority to impose the misnamed “Muslim ban,” which blocked travel to the United States from suspected enemy countries.
But that, the Post reported, isn’t the legal challenge Trump faces. Rather, the open-borders legal phalanx will sue for asylum claims because Trump’s move “would likely violate the 1980 Refugee Act and a 1967 international refugee treaty that the United States signed, said Philip G. Schrag, a Georgetown University law professor and author of several books on asylum and immigration law.”
Federal law says that any immigrant “who is physically present in the United States or who arrives in the United States” — whether at a legal checkpoint or after sneaking across the border — can apply for asylum, he said.
“It’s very unlikely that the courts would hold that the president has the power ... to prevent people from applying for asylum,” Schrag said. “My prediction is that it would be subject to a temporary injunction of a court within days.”
Already, the Post hinted, the Left is preparing sue with bogus and baseless asylum claims.
“They are coming to the United States in search of protection,” one activist told the Post. “It’s ridiculous to argue that the babies in the caravan are a national security threat.”
Unsurprisingly, the American Civil Liberties Union will put its two red cents in. Omar Jadwat, director of its Immigrants’ Rights Project, told the Post that the Supreme Court’s ruling that backed Trump’s travel restrictions doesn’t apply in this case. “That’s the law,” he told the newspaper. “You get a chance to explain why you think you are going to be persecuted if you return home.”
Coming for Jobs
But the migrants aren’t “coming ... in search of protection,” as the Post itself and The Associated Press revealed.
The migrants are coming for jobs. “We are workers,” an illegal alien told the Post. “What are we supposed to do in Honduras if there’s no work?” And “most of the migrants,” the Post reported, “were not planning to apply for asylum.”
As one migrant told AP, “We only want to work.”
