LTRP Note: Today, the church is “reaping the fruit”
of nearly 40 years of Spiritual Formation influence (since Richard
Foster’s Celebration of Discipline was released in 1978). Lighthouse
Trails has warned its readers on a number of occasions about the
direction AWANA children’s club is going with regard to contemplative
spirituality (i.e., Spiritual Formation) (see links below). In the
letter to the editor (below our note), you can see that AWANA is
now teaching children to “listen to God” (the goal in contemplative
prayer).We thought AWANA clubs purpose was to teach children the Word of God through memorization. Since when did they take it upon themselves to teach children to listen to God’s voice in two-way conversations during prayer? Is this not a gateway into Christian mysticism?
Regardless of what one believes about hearing God’s voice outside of Scripture, how is it AWANA’s place to teach children to engage in possibly dangerous “conversations”? Will they also be teaching children about discerning of spirits (that is, testing the spirits – 1 John 4:1-6) and that there are demonic spirits that are “speaking” to people? We hope so. AWANA is supposed to be teaching children the Word of God, helping children to store up God’s Word in their hearts. They now want to teach them how to take part in subjective mystical experiences. Remember, this is coming from an organization that has been promoting Spiritual Formation for several years. How can we trust them to teach children this? Will it not surely be slanted by proponents of contemplative spirituality?
Those who disagree with our posting this about AWANA are certainly entitled to that. But we have been researching AWANA for several years, and we believe this “listening to God” theme is just another stepping stone into dangerous mystical spirituality. Are we saying we do not believe in the work of the Holy Spirit in the believer’s life? No. But we do not believe that there is some kind of taught art (i.e., technique, method, system) in listening to God’s voice as so many in the church are promoting today, just as we do not believe that Christians are supposed to go into a silent state of mind so they can really hear God. If these “practices” were so important to God and so essential to us, why aren’t they taught in the Bible? When the disciples wrote the New Testament, there is nothing to indicate that they sat in stillness entering some sort of sacred space and then began a kind of channeled writing. No. Rather, God inspired them through His Holy Spirit and led them to write the things they did.
Obviously, the parent who contacted us and wrote the letter to the editor is very concerned. And we are too. If you have children or grandchildren who participate in AWANA, we strongly urge you to examine all AWANA literature and teaching tools carefully as well as discuss your concerns with your children’s AWANA leaders, and make sure they understand the dangers of contemplative spirituality.
The big emphasis in today’s church is, “Hear God’s Voice!” It’s all about feel-good and mystical experiences. It is a great tragedy that the focus isn’t on “Know God’s Word” and allow the Lord through His Holy Spirit to work in our lives.
Jesus said, “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth” (John 17:17).

Ask certain indigenous peoples of the South Pacific Islands who Papa is, and they will tell you she is a female goddess4—just like The Shack’s female Papa. Ask certain Haitians, New Orleanians, and Wiccans who are into Voodoo, and they will tell you that Papa is a shapeshifting “trickster” who can appear as either a male or female deity—just like The Shack’s Papa.5 And if you ask, they will all tell you that their Papas are universal Papas who dwell “in, around, and through all things”—just like The Shack’s Papa.

On the “Journeying to Goddess” website, under the heading “Goddess Papa,” we read that Papa is “the Earth Mother who gave birth to all things” and that “Polynesians summon Papa to help in all earthly matters.”6
In his book Unshackled, Pastor Larry DeBruyn describes how William P. Young’s “Papa” bears a striking resemblance to “the name, nature, and nurturing potential” of this Polynesian Earth goddess Papa.7 Quoting from a source on Hawaiian gods and goddesses, DeBruyn cites the references they make to the “comfort,” “care,” “guidance,” and “unconditional love,” that are given to people “in times of crisis and grief” by this Hawaiian Papa and how her “intervention instills calming reassurance and healing.”8 Young seems to parallel the same script as The Shack story wholly revolves around the comfort, care, guidance, and unconditional love that is given by Papa to his main character, Mack, during his time of crisis and grief—how Papa’s intervention instills calming reassurance and the ultimate healing of Mack’s “Great Sadness.”9
Another website elaborates on how the female Polynesian Papa “worshiped by Native Hawaiians” is regarded as “a primordial force of creation who has the power to give life and to heal.”10 A pagan site informs us that a Papa goddess is especially prevalent amongst the Maoris of New Zealand,11 while another site references a South Seas Papa as part of the mythology of the Southern Cook Islands group.12 While Young obviously put a lot of thought into the naming of his Shack characters, and even though he spent his early childhood living on the South Pacific Island of Papua New Guinea,13 he claims to have had no knowledge of this South Seas Papa goddess prior to his writing of The Shack.14
Papa as Trickster
Certain Haitian, New Orleanian, and Wiccan Voodoo practitioners are devoted to a spiritual “Papa” who can appear as both “male and female” and is known as the “trickster.”15 By simply googling “Papa” and “trickster,” a variety of websites emerge to describe this Papa Legba spirit that stands at the gateway to the spirit world. One of these sites—“Exemplore”—states that Papa Legba “is one of the most widely served African deities” and “is always the first and last spirit invoked in any ceremony” because “he opens and closes the doorway to the spirit world.” 16 The site explains that in Voodoo, “Papa” is “the intermediary” who “stands at a spiritual crossroads and grants or denies permission to speak with the spirits of Guinee.”17
On the same Exemplore site, in a special section for witches, Papa is described as a “master shape shifter” who “can help you transform on the astral realm, master dream powers, and advanced magics.”18 But in regards to Papa, it states that “in his shapeshifter form he tends to change genders and forms to delight himself. So don’t be surprised if a woman shows up to help you.”19 And just as Young’s female Papa and the South Seas islands female Papa can be summoned for help, comfort, and healing, this Voodoo trickster Papa can be similarly called upon. One of the posted comments on this witches part of the site states—“Anyone can summon Papa!”20 But sometimes this Voodoo Papa comes when he is not summoned. In another comment, a perplexed woman wrote—“I did not know about Papa at all until he presented his self to me as my spirit guide. Is this normal?”21 A posted reply assured her that “Papa does his own thing his own way, so if he presented himself to you, you can be sure it is him.”22 Another site expressed the confusion that can result from a female ”God” named Papa—“It’s so confusing because Papa is a Mama.”23 But Scripture assures us that the one true God is “not the author of confusion” (1 Corinthians 14:33). He is not a Papa who is a Mama which art in a shack—He is “our Father which art in heaven” (Matthew 6:9).
Praying to Which Papa?
So what Papa are people invoking when they are inspired to pray to Papa after reading The Shack? Is Young presenting Shack readers with the true God of the Bible or with a generic Papa “God” that overlaps with all the other mamas and papas and gods and goddesses around the world? The Shack’s “Jesus” answers that question loud and clear for any Shack reader who has a heart for the truth. With words purposefully put in his mouth by Young—a self-described universalist24—The Shack’s “Jesus” proclaims that his Papa “God” is “the ground of all being” because he “dwells in, around, and through all things.”25 In other words, The Shack’s Jesus says that the Shack’s Papa indwells everyone and everything. This is the same universal God that David Spangler describes in the beginning quote of this article. But this is panentheism, and this is a lie. This is the foundational teaching of the New Age/New Spirituality/New Worldview that has been rapidly emerging both in the world and in the church. All of this is to say—The Shack’s Papa is a universal Papa and The Shack’s “God” is a counterfeit “God” who has cunningly wormed his way into an unsuspecting church.
Trickster Book
As seen with the Voodoo Papa, some of these mama and papa gods and goddesses are also “tricksters.” And they are definitely doing their trickster thing—which often entails cleverly undermining existing societal rules and established religious beliefs as they offer their unique brand of spiritual healing in the name of a more universal alternative spirituality. What can be especially deceptive is that much of their rebellious spiritual activity is cloaked in half-truths, clever remarks, playful humor—and even Christian language. And what seems all too apparent is that The Shack—and particularly The Shack’s Papa—fall into this trickster category. The novel grabs people’s hearts and minds even as biblical Christianity is being dismantled in front of them as they read the book. And only a trickster book can convince people they are reading about Jesus Christ when the name of Christ is never mentioned—not even once—in the entire story. A generic universal Jesus and a generic universal Papa and not a single mention of Christ, or the Devil for that matter—yet The Shack has already become one of the most popular Christian books ever written!
Trickster books for the church will use Christian language to pull the wool over your eyes so they mess with your mind—it’s all part of “messing around” and being a trickster. Toward the end of The Shack’s story, when the female Papa shapeshifts into being a male Papa, Mack asks if Papa is “still messing” with him. Papa’s immediate answer is—“Always.”26 At this point, sincere readers of The Shack need ask themselves a reasonable question—“Is the one true God of the Bible always “messing” with us, or is this what you would expect from a universal gender-bending trickster Papa “God” who bears more of a resemblance to the trickster god of this world than the one true God of the Bible.
But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. Mr. President, VETO THE BUDGET BILL!
There is way too much wrong with this bill! Money goes to Planned Parenthood to murder more of our unborn, money continues to go to sanctuary cities to hide illegal alien criminals, there is no money for the border wall so our sovereignty is still nonexistent. We fought like hell to send all these republicans to Congress and they act like Democrats because our President isn’t one of “them.”
Pence called the deal a “bipartisan win for the American people.” Who the hell is this globalist ass kidding? Oh yeah, we know he’s one of them and chummy with the Republicans who hate Trump, and we haven’t fallen for his phony Bible thumping.
Chuckie Schumer thinks they’ve had a massive victory, and perhaps the above Chambers quote would seem to be true, especially with the aid the republicans are giving to the democrats to thwart everything Trump promised in his campaign. Even without the Conservative Caucus vote, this rotten piece of legislation may pass.
I don’t want our side to be the losing side; I want us to win, but to do that, we have to let the criminals in Congress know we mean business.
I want the wall built, I want the influx of non-vetted refugees from known terrorist nations stopped, I want sanctuary cities defunded, I want Obamacare repealed, and I want taxes lowered across the board!
No one person helped Donald J. Trump get elected, certainly not Jared Kushner as some have proclaimed. The only reason Trump is in our White House is because the American people heard him echo what they themselves wanted, and they responded with massive votes.
So, let’s take a look at where we stand on these issues, even though there are far, far more, and see who is blocking our President and ultimately THE AMERICAN PEOPLE!
Build the Wall
Most of the billions of dollars in cash sent to Mexico by Mexicans living in the U.S. is transferred by “undocumented” workers, read illegal aliens, and the total topped $26 billion in 2016, according to research by the Washington institute Inter-American Dialogue.
While services have expanded, the cost of sending money to Latin America and the Caribbean has dropped to below 5 percent of the transfer amount. Time to raise it. Do the addition, if it’s raised to 7 percent, that extra 2 percent would bring in $520 million in one year. Surely in a number of years the wall would be paid for, so what’s the hold up? Haven’t we given enough taxpayer aid to illegal aliens? How about getting some of it back to build the wall?
House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said that the cost could range from $12 billion-$15 billion. Surely businessman Trump could beat that price. The likes of McCain, Murkowsky, Corker, Cornyn, Lankford, Amash, and others of the same ilk are fighting our president tooth and nail. They have a million excuses for allowing our southern border to remain a sieve.
And according to Rush Limbaugh they’ve actually laughed at Trump’s belief that he’ll get the wall. Maybe they’d best call China and ask them to tear down their wall, after all, it isn’t fair to illegal aliens.
Mexico is saying the wall is hostile and unfriendly and an aggravating action!
Really Mexico? Well, your criminals pouring over our borders and
murdering Americans and bleeding the taxpayers dry is rather hostile and
unfriendly as well.Tyrannical Judges Gutting the Constitution
Mr. President, the Constitution and the law is on your side for your travel ban. You have the authority to stop these judges from delaying your executive orders regarding who enters our country. The majority of these judges have been put in place by Democratic presidents. Carter, Bush, and Obama appointed the three 9th circuit court judges who upheld District Judge Robart’s stay on Trump’s first EO.
Obama appointee Judge Theodore D. Chuang ruled that the purpose of the President’s first travel ban, and also his revised travel ban, was to discriminate against Muslims for political reasons and the ruling cited Mr. Trump’s own campaign words against him. What hogwash!
What these judges do not understand is that this is not an executive order against a religion, but against a worldwide political movement that carries with it hatred for infidels, or non-Muslims. Hundreds of thousands of non-vetted refugees have entered this country, and they have no desire to assimilate. One needs only to look at Europe today to understand why Trump’s EO’s should stand.
Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution gives Congress the power to regulate immigration. In 1952, Congress passed a law empowering the president to deny entry into the U.S. to “any class of aliens” considered to be “detrimental to the interests of the United States.” In other words, a threat to America and in the interests of national security. And that is exactly what our President is trying to do! He wants to stop the threat!
The Supremes like making law, don’t wait on them, use the law you now have that previous presidents have used, and move ahead.
Defunding of Sanctuary Cities
Judge
William Orrick was appointed by Obama, in 2012, to the position of US
District Judge for the Northern District of California. This leftist
ruled that the US government can’t withhold federal funds from sanctuary
cities. Orrick raised a couple hundred thou for Obama, and he also
blocked the release of the underground recordings of Planned Parenthood,
in which the sale of harvested organs from aborted babies was openly
discussed.Attorney General Jeff Sessions and the U.S. Department of Justice had sent warning letters to nine jurisdictions which were identified in a May 2016 report by the Department of Justice’s Inspector General as having laws that potentially violate 8 U.S.C. § 1373 a/k/a “sanctuary city policies.” Link
The administration says sanctuary cities allow dangerous criminals back on the street and that the order is needed to keep the country safe…think of Kathryn Steinle and others murdered in “sanctuary” cities. These sanctuary cities, like Portland and Berkeley are ripe for leftist violence, and are “safe spaces” for total censorship of free speech.
Again, the law is usurped by these judges, and again it will probably end up in the supreme court…which means more American citizens will die in these cities before a ruling on the law which already exists to protect us, comes down from the high court.
Obamacare Repeal
Conservatives were thankful that RyanCare failed. What Trump supporters wanted to know was why Paul Ryan was allowed to put forth something that still had the stench of Obamacare, and expect the shrinking middleclass to like it.
RyanCare 2.0 was not worth passing, and would have been political suicide for the Republicans. We want Obamacare repealed completely, without any fixes. Just get rid of the damned thing! Put those few who needed Obamacare on Medicaid for the interim while the free market adjusts.
Representative Jim Jordan, Chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, along with 30 of the most conservative members of Congress, said RyanCare didn’t go far enough, and they were right. It didn’t, and that’s why they were against it! The members are very pro-life and against Planned Parenthood, but RyanCare simply did not defeat enough of Obamacare.
Jordan was interviewed by Chris Wallace who attacked him for not passing the RyanCare bill and repeated what Speaker Ryan had said, “We’re now stuck with Obamacare for the foreseeable future.” Jordan stated that only 17% of Americans were actually for the “American Health Care Act.”
Wallace accused Jordan and the Caucus of going against Trump and Ryan on this important bill and being obstructionists. But Jordan came back with the truth of it. He said, “This is about the American people and what we told them we were going to do. There is no way this legislation was consistent with what the American people sent us here to accomplish, no way it was consistent with what we told them we were going to do, and that’s why you saw members oppose it and that’s why the Freedom Caucus opposed it in large part, because of that simple fact.”
Jordan said they promised to do it the way they told the American people, and this bill absolutely did not live up to that promise. “So, let’s do tax reform, like we told the American people we were going to. Let’s make sure we actually secure the border, build the wall, like we told the American people we were going to. We make this job way too complicated. Do what we told the American people we were going to do.”
Even the evil United Nations is warning the Trump administration in a bizarre letter that repealing the unconstitutional ObamaCare takeover of health insurance may violate what the UN likes to call “international law.”
Repeal, without any replacement is the only answer!
Tax Reform
Speaker Paul Ryan is claiming that the failure of RyanCare will now make tax reform much more difficult. White House budget director Mick Mulvaney and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin both had essentially the same message. However, plans for tax reform, job creation, trade deals, and infrastructure spending remain intact regardless of what happened to the health care bill.
That admission shows how tough it’s been for Trump to get any major legislative victories, and the Republicans have offered none to speak of. In spite of Republican control of Congress, Trump and GOP leaders haven’t been able to move forward on significant legislation. It is simply because the majority of Republicans are more in bed with their democrat so-called adversaries than with their Republican President. The push for healthcare reform hit the wall when both moderates and conservatives balked at the bill as presented, and hill Republicans concede that comprehensive tax reform may be harder to accomplish!
What a bunch of poppycock. I never saw one thing Obama wanted to be difficult for him to pass even when the Republicans won back the House in 2010 (and assumed control in January 2011), and won back Senate control in 2014 (assuming control in January 2015). They still gave Obama everything he wanted or they would have been called “racists” by the Socialist media. So, they ran scared and caved.
We have a president who made promises to the American people, who resonated with the middleclass and grassroots, who told them what he wanted to do, and the NeverTrumpers in his own party are making new legislation just as difficult for him as the communists in the Democratic party.
Conclusion
We’ve hit the first 100 days, and Lou Dobbs made it clear when he said, “Speaker Ryan, working against the President and his agenda at every turn, frustrating the entire GOP conference and indeed the American people. President Trump has been gracious, he’s been generous, even, with the inept Ryan, but the President today, acknowledging that he is disappointed.”
Folks, it has always been up to us. Electing a president you like doesn’t mean that one man alone can fix it all. The entire congress needs to be cleaned out and replaced at nearly every election if they don’t follow the Constitution. Unfortunately, we now have several generations who have not been taught the Constitution and are illiterate when it comes to understanding our government and even our voting system.
Still, it is up to all of us. We must make our voices heard, just as we did when we elected Trump. That means calling the White House and the damnable traitorous filth in Congress, it means emailing your senators and representatives. It means we have to harass them into doing what we voted for, Donald Trump’s campaign promises!

The Vatican announced confirmed miracles for two of the shepherd children of Fatima

- In the centennial of the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima, two
shepherd children who witnessed the apparitions are one step closer to
canonization. After a second miracle was approved by Pope Francis, he
signed the decree for the cause of canonization for Blesseds Francisco
and Jacinta Marto Thursday. The third seer, Servant of God Lucia Santos,
who died in 2005, is also advancing in her cause for canonization, opened in 2008.
Francisco Marto died on April 4, 1919 at age 10.
Francisco's First Holy Communion was also his last, known in the
Catholic faith as Viaticum.
His sister Jacinta died the following year on February 20, also at age
10. Their cause for canonization has been open since 1946. Both
siblings were beatified on May 13, 1989 by Pope St. John Paul II, the
anniversary of the first apparition of Our Lady of Fatima in 1917.
In her messages to the seers, Our Lady instructed them to pray their Rosary daily and offer sacrifices for sinners.
"Pray, pray very much," she
insisted. "Make sacrifices for sinners. Many souls go to Hell, because
no one is willing to help them with sacrifice."
The children followed
Our Lady's instructions, going without their lunch, wearing a rope with
knots, patiently enduring the ridicule of those who didn't believe
them.
There were six apparitions total, occurring on the 13th of
each month from May to October, with the exception of the August
apparition, which took place on August 19, the Feast of the Assumption.
This was owing to the children's being prevented by the secularist
government, which was trying to force the children to deny the
apparitions. These attempts included death threats.
The
apparitions were preceded by a wave of anti-clerical laws associated
with the revolution that had taken place in Portugal in 1910. Our Lady
stated in her messages to the children that she desired consecration of
Russia to Her Immaculate Heart and the practice of the Five First Saturdays devotion. She said if her requests were not followed, Russia "will spread her errors throughout the world." In November 1917, following the final apparition of Our Lady in October and the Miracle of the Sun, Russia fell to the Bolsheviks.
The Fatima message consists of three parts, or "secrets":
The First was the vision of Hell. The second was the the requests of
Communions of Reparation on five consecutive first Saturdays of the
month, and the Consecration of Russia. There were several consecrations
made by popes under varying circumstances, which has given rise to controversy over whether this part of Our Lady's request has been fulfilled. The Third Secret was released in the year 2000, and has likewise been the subject of controversy.
The
date May 13 holds significance owing to being the date of the first
appearance of Our Lady of Fatima. It was also on this date in 1981 that
Pope St. John Paul II survived an assassination attempt where he was
shot four times. One bullet struck the Holy Father in the abdomen,
missing a major artery by a fraction of an inch. The pope would later
credit his survival to Our Lady, saying that her hand guided the
bullet's path. The name Fatima, the town in which the three children received Our Lady's messages, was named for the daughter of Mohammed, the founder of Islam. This is from the period of Moorish occupation of Portugal and Spain, which lasted from 711–1492. Some have speculated a connection between the Fatima message and its emphasis on the Rosary with the military victory over Muslim forces at the Battle of Lepanto in 1571, which Pope Pius V credited to Our Lady of the Rosary.

TAMPA, Fla. — A religious liberties organization has
submitted a letter of complaint to a school district in Florida after
being contacted by parents who say that their child’s math teacher is
promoting homosexual advocacy in the classroom. The teacher denies any
wrongdoing.
Attorneys with Liberty Counsel wrote
to Hillsborough County Superintendent Jeff Eakins on April 19 to
express concern about Riverview High School teacher Lora Jane Reidas,
who identifies as a lesbian. They advised that they had received reports
that three children in Reidas’ classroom had been prohibited from
wearing crucifixes because they could be considered to be “gang symbols”
and “disrespectful.”It provided a photograph of one of the crucifix pendants.
Meanwhile, according to additional photographs provided to the organization by parents, Reidas has decorated her classroom with various homosexual advocacy material, including buttons on her desk that read “I Love My LGBT Students” and “Safe Schools for All” in promotion of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN).
A poster is also displayed on the wall advising that her classroom is “safe and inclusive” for “lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students and their allies,” and the word “ally”—also posted to the wall—is spelled out in large cut-out letters and covered with handwritten sayings in support of the homosexual lifestyle.
“Moreover, at the beginning of the semester, Ms. Riedas placed LGBT rainbow stickers on students’ classroom folders without their consent, which were there one day when the students arrived,” the letter from Liberty Counsel alleged. “One of our clients reports that after she removed the LGBT sticker, Ms. Riedas’ behavior toward her changed markedly for the worse.”
At the time of the correspondence, it was also believed that Reidas planned on promoting the GLSEN’s “Day of Silence” and was apparently tweeting about homosexual advocacy issues during class time.
While Reidas serves as the sponsor of the school’s “gay-straight alliance,” Liberty Counsel believes the teacher’s actions violate district policy, which states that staff “may not dedicate work time to an outside interest, activity or association,” since her homosexual advocacy has nothing to do with math class.
“Ms. Riedas has … ‘use[d] institutional privileges for personal gain or advantage’ in promoting her own politically activist LGBT viewpoint to the students, which are a captive audience. Her choice of buttons and classroom décor give the overwhelming impression that her lesbian identity is foremost in her mind at all times, and is designed to show students in no uncertain terms how she views the world,” the group wrote.
However, Reidas has denied any wrongdoing, stating that she only told one student at the beginning of the year not to wear rosary beads because they could be considered gang symbols as per district policy. She said she would never prohibit students from wearing crosses, claiming that she herself identifies a Christian.
“I’m a Christian myself. I would never do that because I would be hurt if someone would tell me not to wear my cross,” Reidas told the Tampa Bay Times.
And while she didn’t deny the homosexual advocacy displays in her classroom, she asserted that such discussions are separate from math class and that she’s simply trying to let students know that her room is a safe space from bullying.
“I am trying to let kids know that if they need a sanctuary, my classroom is it,” Reidas said. “Some teachers, they let it go because they’re kids. But I will address it. ‘That’s so gay?’ Not at all.”
She said that as word has spread about the controversy, some students are now purposefully coming to class with Roman Catholic rosaries and/or are drawing crosses or writing Scripture on the back of their math papers.
“I’m just annoyed that they’re using my students,” Reidas contended. “They’re manipulating them. They’re getting kids as teenagers to lie for their agenda.”
Liberty Counsel President Mat Staver disagrees.
“She’s free to do what she wants to do in her own time outside of that classroom,” he said. “She’s free to be a sponsor of a student-initiated, student-led club. But she crosses the line when she brings things into the classroom that pushes her ideas onto the students. You talk about being inclusive. But she’s not including people who do not agree with her.”
The district is currently investigating the complaint.
