On December 18, 2014, President Obama signed an executive order creating the President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing. In May 2015, the task force came out with its Final Report, which is commonly given the title “21st Century Policing.”

One of the report’s recommendations, which the Obama-friendly media fixated on, concerns greater restrictions on transfers of military equipment to local police agencies. However, as we reported in a related article ("What's Happening to Our Police?"), the new “accountability” rules will not explicitly reduce the flow of war materials to law enforcement, but simply place more federal controls over local police. Moreover, the new Obama rules regarding military gear were just one component of a broader set of recommendations issued by Obama’s plan for “21st Century Policing” — the overarching theme of which was promoting increased federal control over law enforcement.

While speaking to a group of police at a carefully stage-managed event in Camden, New Jersey, the president also touted some of his other efforts to exert more control over police — officers who, in accordance with the Constitution, are supposed to serve and be accountable to local communities and the wishes of local citizens, not the mandates of the White House. Among other schemes, Obama boasted of his administration’s alleged efforts to “fight crime,” improve relations between police departments and the communities they serve, and promote “transparency.” He also touted a White House “data initiative” aimed at prodding police departments into following federal “guidelines” on data and body cameras.

Finally, Obama also celebrated federal “grants” created by the administration to promote and fund the implementation of dubious policies associated with “community policing strategies.” Those federal grants, of course, along with others, are at the heart of Obama’s efforts to nationalize everything from healthcare and education standards to law enforcement. Among the schemes to be promoted with the new grants are national standards for police departments receiving federal funds. Some critics have started describing the plot as “Common Core for police,” a reference to the Obama administration’s Department of Education efforts to bribe states into imposing the deeply controversial national K-12 school standards and the associated federal testing regime. The effort also comes just a few months after United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, citing Ferguson, demanded that American police submit to “international standards.”

According to a report by Obama’s task force released in March, two tentacles of the Department of Justice, the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) and the Office of Justice Programs, “should provide technical assistance and incentive funding to jurisdictions” that adhere to the White House plan, “in return for receiving federal funds.” The report also called for uniform federal standards for data collected by local police departments, and much more.

Even before citing militarization of police as an excuse to usurp more control over local police, Obama was celebrating the recommendations of his task force, and demanding rapid implementation. “I’m going to be asking Eric Holder and the Justice Department and his successor to go through all of these recommendations so that we can start implementing them,” he explained. “I know one area that’s going to be of great interest is whether we can expand the COPS program that in the past has been very effective, continues to be effective, but is largely underfunded.”

The recommendations offered a “great opportunity” to “really transform how we think about community law enforcement relations,” Obama said. “We need to seize that opportunity,” he continued, echoing the “never let a crisis go to waste” rhetoric of other statists. “This is something that I’m going to stay very focused on in the months to come.” He certainly was not kidding.

Just weeks after the report was released, the administration unveiled a list of six U.S. cities targeted to serve as “pilot sites” to develop and deploy federal guidance for local police — all of it supposedly to create “better procedures, reduce racial bias, and regain citizens’ trust.” The plan, officially dubbed the “National Initiative for Building Community Trust and Justice,” will use U.S. taxpayer dollars to deploy “experts” and “researchers” charged with training officers to act in a manner that the DOJ deems just — in essence doing the bidding of the Obama administration. Officially, the Justice Department will be helping local officials “fight crime” under the scheme, according to news reports.

Initially, the program, which will cost American taxpayers almost $5 million, will aim to “assess” the relationship between local police and the communities they serve. Then, the DOJ squads will work to develop plans supposedly aimed at enhancing “procedural justice,” reducing bias, and supporting “reconciliation in communities where trust has been eroded,” the Justice Department said in a statement announcing the plan. With more than two-thirds of Americans saying in a survey that the federal government is “out of control” and a “threat” to their liberties, it was not immediately clear how “trust” would be “restored” by deepening federal involvement.

The first six cities to be targeted as pilot sites will be Birmingham, Alabama; Fort Worth, Texas; Gary, Indiana; Minneapolis, Minnesota; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and Stockton, California. Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price described the program as “a tool to strengthen our partnership with the justice system.” But other police departments are also in the cross hairs. According to the official announcement, an unspecified number of “police departments and communities that are not pilot sites” will also be targeted for more DOJ “training” and “technical assistance.”

It bears mentioning that the DOJ,  which supposedly will guide local law enforcement in proper procedures, has in recent years been exposed training state and local police to view citizens’ speech as potential indicators of terrorism — including among damning public expression mundane matters such as bumper stickers promoting the Bill of Rights or a U.S. withdrawal from the UN. Ironically, at the time of the announcements on pilot cities, the DOJ was being led by disgraced Attorney General Eric Holder, who was held in criminal contempt of Congress for trying to stonewall an investigation into the administration’s “Fast and Furious” scheme to arm Mexican drug cartels.

The efforts to further nationalize and federalize law enforcement are also in line with Obama’s campaign rhetoric about building a “civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded” as the U.S. military. And critics say the agenda should be ringing alarm bells nationwide.

“Americans everywhere should be very concerned about oversight of local police agencies,” explained former detective Jim Fitzgerald, the national field director for The John Birch Society, the parent organization of this magazine. The constitutionalist group, which has chapters in all 50 states, has been running a campaign for decades called “Support Your Local Police and Keep Them Independent.” The effort is meant to, among other goals, protect local communities from having their police departments turned into tentacles of an all-powerful federal government.

“These steps to exercise and take control over police departments should raise a red flag among police officials and give deep concern to anyone who understands the history of national police forces,” continued Fitzgerald. “Have we so soon forgotten the Gestapo and the KGB, both national police agencies, that terrorized the citizens of Germany and Russia and led to the imprisonment and deaths of tens of thousands of innocent men and women? Has there ever been a national police force that benefited the citizens who live under it? Never!”

Of course, the nationalization of police did not begin with Obama, and it probably will not end with him. So-called fusion centers, pairing local and state officials with federal bureaucrats under the sprawling “Homeland Security” banner, have been in place since the George W. Bush administration. And a broad range of DOJ offices and programs has been quietly expanding federal control over police for decades. But the trends are accelerating, and the endgame is becoming more clear.

Decentralized government is one of the cornerstones of America’s freedom and its constitutional system of federalism. Even if Obama’s radical plans to nationalize police departments were not unconstitutional, though, history provides numerous examples showing why national policing is not just unwise, but extremely dangerous to liberty. Congress must rein in Obama, and in the meantime, state and local governments should refuse to surrender self-government to an out-of-control White House in exchange for unconstitutional federal bribes. The American people, if they hope to preserve liberty and self-government, should work to support their local police, and keep them independent.

A brand new undercover video was released today by the Center For Medical Progress, further exposing Planned Parenthood’s involvement in the trade of aborted fetal tissue and organs.

In the footage, Dr. Carolyn Westhoff, Senior Medical Advisor for PPFA, admits that Planned Parenthood provides buyers with hearts, eyes and “gonads” of unborn babies.

The officials on tape also intimate, once again, that the organisation is using methods that contravene federal law to sell body parts for profit.

“We’ve just been working with people who want particular tissues, like, you know, they want cardiac, or they want eyes, or they want neural,” says Dr. Westhoff, speaking to a reporter who she believes to be a potential buyer.

“Certainly, everything we provide–oh, gonads! Oh my God, gonads. Everything we provide is fresh.” Westhoff blurts, as if she’s selling organic produce in a Grocery store.

“Obviously, we would have the potential for a huge P.R. issue in doing this,” she also states, while offering to contact “national office abortion people” from Planned Parenthood on behalf of the potential buyer.

The footage also shows Deborah VanDerhei, the National Director for CAPS, a Planned Parenthood internal committe, referring to financial transactions for fetal tissue as “donation for remuneration.”

“I have been talking to the executive director of the National Abortion Federation, we’re trying to figure this out as an industry, about how we’re going to manage remuneration, because the headlines would be a disaster.” VanDerhei states.

No kidding.

“We have independent colleagues who generate a fair amount of income doing this.” VanDerhei also states, adding that “It’s an issue that you might imagine we’re not really that comfortable talking about on email.”

VanDerhei is also recorded speaking with Pennsylvania based Planned Parenthood official Vanessa Russo. Russo notes, “A company like this that wants to give our organization money for the tissue – I think that that’s a valid exchange, and that that’s okay.” VanDerhei nods in agreement and mutters “Mmhmmm.”

In another piece of footage, Vanessa Cullins, the Vice President of External Medical Affairs for Planned Parenthood, issues a warning about possible exposure of the fetal tissue trade.

“This is important. This could destroy your organization and us, if we don’t time conversations correctly,” she is recorded telling a reporter she believes to be a prospective buyer.

Commenting on the new footage, head of CMP David Daleiden noted “From email black-outs to contorted oxymorons like ‘donation for remuneration,’ the lengths to which Planned Parenthood leadership will go to cover-up their illegal sale of aborted baby parts are nothing less than the desperation of a guilty conscience.”

“Planned Parenthood CEO Cecile Richards openly admits they receive ‘$60 per tissue specimen,’ and their contracts with StemExpress offer payments per fetus ‘determined in the clinic to be usable.’” Daleiden adds.

“Planned Parenthood runs their abortion and baby parts business in open disregard for the law and should be prosecuted immediately. Their taxpayer funding should be reassigned to Federally Qualified Health Centers, which provide more and comprehensive health services at locations outnumbering Planned Parenthood 20 to 1.” Daleiden further urges.

As the House plans to vote on a bill to freeze Planned Parenthood funding in the coming days, Senator Rand Paul issued an appeal Monday to pastors nationwide to get behind the move to defund the abortion organisation.

“When I saw all of those undercover videos showing Planned Parenthood’s chief abortionist admit they routinely skirt laws against partial-birth abortion to kill unborn babies, dismember them and sell their body parts for profit, it sickened my stomach. I vowed to do everything I could to strip them of every last dime of taxpayer dollars.” a statement accompanying a video message reads.

“I’m writing you today—to ask you to help mobilize the grassroots pressure it’s going to take to force the Senate to strip Planned Parenthood of every last penny of taxpayer dollars.” Paul adds.

“Is this really worth getting–I don’t even know what in general, what a specimen generally brings in?” VanDerhei later asks a prospective buyer. When she is told $100 per specimen, she remarks, “But we have independent colleagues who generate a fair amount of income doing this.” VanDerhei suggests that Planned Parenthood goes to great lengths to avoid leaving a paper trail about their fetal tissue activity: “It’s an issue that you might imagine we’re not really that comfortable talking about on email.”

In a conversation recorded between VanDerhei and Vanessa Russo, Compliance Program Administrator for Planned Parenthood Keystone in Pennsylvania, Russo argues, “A company like this that wants to give our organization money for the tissue–I think that that’s a valid exchange, and that that’s okay.” VanDerhei nods her head up and down and affirms, “Mhm.”

The sale or purchase of human fetal tissue is a federal felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison or a fine of up to $500,000 (42 U.S.C. 289g-2).

Vanessa Cullins, the Vice President of External Medical Affairs, seems fully aware of the criminal exposure that fetal body parts sales present to Planned Parenthood: “This is important. This could destroy your organization and us, if we don’t time those conversations correctly,” she tells a prospective buyer.

"There are four psychological principles that activate the power to create profound political change, including the election of Bernie Sanders as president:

1. Know that anything is possible; the last thing to worry about is what the majority thinks.
The majority didn’t wake up one day and say, “Oh, let’s free the slaves.” The majority didn’t wake up one day and say, “Ah hell, let’s go on and give women the right to vote.” Hardly. Serious social change emerges from a small group of people, usually considered outrageous radicals by the status quo of their time, who simply have a better idea. Such ideas always seem too hard, too different, too far-fetched, when first articulated; only later does the manifestation of their ideas seem to have been inevitable.

By definition, those who propose the revolutionary idea do not have the same material force as does the status quo –financially, or in any other way. Their winning edge – ourwinning edge – is conviction. Conviction is a force multiplier. It creates greater power than any amount of money or institutional authority. Today, it’s the conviction that short-term economic gain for corporate interests should not be the bottom line when creating political, social and economic policies in the United States, that elevates the Sanders campaign and provides its moral authority.

The axis of social change today is more vertical than horizontal: don’t dumb down the message in order to attract more people, but rather go deeper and deeper into the message as it is in order to attract the natural resonance of those who agree in their hearts.

2. Remember that democracy is more than a political system; it’s an evolutionary step forward for the human race. It isn’t just our right, but also our responsibility, to protect our democracy when it’s threatened and expand it where its scope is limited.

Every generation is a steward of our democracy, and just as governmental officials swear to defend and protect the Constitution of the United States, so should we all. In supporting the Sanders campaign, we’re not merely standing up for what we want. We’re standing up for one of the highest ideals of American democracy: that government should balance the protection of individual liberty with a concern for the collective good. At a time when so many in power seem to have forgotten the “collective good” part, we’re here to remind them. In fact, we’re here to do more than remind. We are here to insist, through the powers given to the people through free elections, that the cry for democracy be heard amidst the clanging cymbals of meaninglessness that pass for politics today.

From our earliest days as a nation and continuing through today, American politics has been an ongoing contest between those seeking to expand the practice of democracy and those seeking to diminish it. When not only one, but both major political parties in the United States have become in too many cases mere handmaidens to the new corporate order of things, it’s more important than ever – because we are patriots – to stand up and say, “Hell, no!” We are not just doing this for ourselves. We are doing this for generations to come.

3. Exercise emotional self-discipline. Personal negativity expressed towards individuals carrying the banner of the corporatocracy diminishes our power to create the alternative.

Just as a professional athlete literally can’t afford 0.01 % of a second to decry the dumb mistake he or she might have made a moment previously, we can’t afford the time or energy it would take to simply complain about what we don’t want. We need the time, and the energy, to promote what we do want: in this case, for Bernie Sanders to win the Democratic nomination and then the Presidency.

Demonizing individuals undercuts the moral and spiritual power of the Sanders campaign, and fortunately Senator Sanders himself remains above it. “Non-violence” means more than a refusal to pick up a weapon; it means the refusal to give in to violent thoughts or words of any kind. There are ways to passionately disagree without being hateful. Many of the people we most disagree with are using the tools of democracy no differently than we are, and have a right to do so. We should spend less time demonizing them, and more time emulating their efforts. Our biggest problems today do not stem from illegal efforts so much as from legal ones — legal now, sad to say, because of the actions of our own Congress, President and Supreme Court. The only tool powerful enough to override this too-often legal tide toward democratization, is the legal use of the tools of democracy. We just need to kick ass and make this happen.

4. Reject the propaganda that someone else’s win is inevitable.

There were many who said we could never abolish slavery, that women would never get the right to vote, that institutionalized segregation in the American South was here to stay, and gays would never be allowed to marry. Today, the propagandistic effort to defeat Sanders is through minimizing his candidacy, marginalizing his efforts, asserting that the machine arrayed against him is too powerful for a bunch of ragamuffin populists to overcome. Let’s remember that the economy of slavery was a powerful machine, too. Yet a bunch of ragamuffin Quakers started a revolution that could not be stopped.

The elite sees the size of Sanders’ rallies across the country, and they’re more concerned about it than they’re letting on. Don’t succumb to their pretension that they’ve got this all sewn up, because in their hearts they know that they don’t. Do whatever you can, on any given day, to keep spreading the word that a political revolution is needed in America, and the Sanders campaign is the only one that represents it. If we each raise our voices in whatever way possible, the cry of freedom that this effort represents will ring across the land, continue to accrue to the Sanders campaign the force and passion it is already building, and achieve in time his winning the nomination and ultimately the White House.

If enough of us make the effort, then the political revolution Bernie talks about will come about. If enough of us don’t, then it will not. But this isn’t the time in history to sit out the effort, that’s for sure. In Senator Sanders’ words, “Will I succeed? I can’t guarantee you that. But I can tell you that from a human point of view it is better to show up than to give up.”

If enough of us stand with him, we’ll do what generations before us have done so magnificently: we will have proven that, in the final analysis, Americans are serious about protecting and fostering the first principles that make this country great. Often, Americans are distracted and wake up late to what is truly going on. But when we do wake up, we’ve proven time and time again that we can slam it like nobody’s business. Now is such a time. It’s time to wake up. It’s time to slam it. It’s time to win this election for Bernie.
