SBC Prez Steve Gaines on Scripture: It Ain’t Enough

*Note, this is Day 5 of our series, Seven Days of Gaines.
The diligent digester of God’s Holy Word will, when taking time to lift their head from the focus on His revelation to us to view the landscape of what is the Southern Baptist Convention today, rapidly realize that the chasm between that Word and our pulpits is immense. Though the SBC has been always quaintly viewed by the moniker “people of the Book,” it’s abundantly evident even to the infrequent imbiber of the written fountain of Truth that our staunch stands of the past on such things as Biblical authority, inerrancy, and infallibility have become mere “been there done that” entries on our self-aggrandized denominational resume.
The problem is that all those hard fought, righteous battles over the priority of Scripture in our faith have come to naught. Denominational leaders in every agency and pastors in probably every pulpit will pay oral homage to the importance of the Word, but betray that claim by their pragmatic disobedience. Our claims to Scriptural orthodoxy are betrayed by our practical orthopraxy. (The correct term for this would be “heteropraxy“; behavior inconsistent with our professed beliefs.)   Our walk doesn’t match our talk.
In the SBC, belief in, reliance on, and submission to the sufficiency of Scripture is absent. (Hey, you guys in the lofty towers of the SBC kingdom? Wanna turn the denomination around? First, repent. Then, believe the Word, and behave accordingly!)
God’s latest “man for the hour” Steve Gaines, having taken the helm of the fast sinking S.S. SBC, is effectively no different with regards to Scriptural sufficiency than the previous “anointed and appointed” Ronnie Floyd. But, of course, such could’ve been expected since Gaines was nominated by yet another former SBC elitist, the flash and sizzle-centric, “it’s all about you gospel” huckster Johnny Hunt.
To be an effective leader in the SBC these days, whether at the top of the denominational pyramid or in a local pulpit far from the glitz and glamor of constant Baptist Press coverage, one has to engage in the patently unbiblical, and intentionally manipulative, maneuver of vision casting. Vision casting is about as Biblical as sprinkling the blood of a throat-slit chicken across altar affixed crucifixes while clutching prayer beads and chanting some Santeria mantra summoning the spirits. Vision casting, though less messy, is no less unscriptural.
Steve Gaines is a vision caster. He’s a big vision caster.   Not “big” as in personal girth, but big as in bulky visions. It’s in his teaching others how to vision cast that he explains his belief in the insufficiency of Scripture.
‘I want a vision big enough that if the Holy Ghost doesn’t show up, it’s gonna fall down.”  Steve Gaines
Oh yeah, Gaines apparently believes that the Holy Spirit tends to make random appearances in his life or his church, or even during a worship service. Listening to Gaines speak in such a way, it seems that the Holy Spirit is just a little bit less God than God actually is since omnipresence seems to be an issue with Him. Forget that whole “I am with you always” promise from Jesus. For Gaines, when he feels something, that’s the assurance of God’s presence, not what Christ has promised.
In teaching a group about how to be a vision caster, Gaines gives us clarity about his own belief in the sufficiency of Scripture, or his belief in the IN-sufficiency of Scripture, depending on how you look at it. If you want to skip the chase, here’s a good summary statement: For Steve Gaines, Scripture ain’t enough.
(I’ve utilized the common Southern contraction of “ain’t”, though gasp-inducing to proper English users, nevertheless is colloquially accurate in the vernacular of those from the Bible belt, from which both Gaines and I arose. LOL)
Consider this excerpt from Gaines’ vision casting lesson where he clearly asserts that reading the Bible is not the only way God speaks to you. Gaines is prone to what he refers to as “the inner witness of the Holy Spirit.”
“I believe in the power of the Holy Spirit. I believe He’s real and I believe He’s talking to us all the time. I really do. If you say the only way God can speak to you is through the Bible, you have missed it.”  Steve Gaines  (Emphasis added)
Umm … friends … believers?   No.  Just say no.
There are numerous great men of God, down through the historic halls of authentic orthodoxy that would contest both Gaines’ emphasis on the Holy Spirit and his proclamation in the insufficiency of Scripture. Here are a few such refutations.
“God wants to give you His Spirit only through His external Word.”  Martin Luther
“Scripture is the Holy Spirit’s school where everything we need to know is taught and where nothing is taught that is unneeded.”  John Calvin
“The Spirit and the Word must be combined. If I look to the Spirit alone without the Word, I lay myself open to great delusions.”   George Mueller
“If you wish to know God, you must know His Word. If you wish to perceive His power, you must see how He works by His Word. If you wish to know His purpose, before it comes to pass, you can only discover it by His Word.”  Charles Spurgeon
But Steve Gaines would, and does, discount the fundamental truth known by these men, one that had formerly been staunchly defended within the SBC . It’s a truth that God Himself has made rather clear in His Word. “You have exalted above all things your name and your word.” (Psalm 138:2)   But, in the Steve Gaines translation, what the Psalmist meant was “your name and your word … and whatever I think I hear you saying to me.” (Doesn’t Scripture warn about “adding or taking away?” Yeah, I think it does.)
Gaines continued giving his wanna-be vision-casting’ students a defense for going beyond God’s Word to get their vision.
“There are some things in your life that God’s gonna talk to you about that are not spelled out in Scripture. You’ve gotta learn to walk with God. You say, well, that sounds subjective. Well, sometimes it’s gonna be personal … however you want it to be.”  Steve Gaines  (Emphasis Added)
“However you want it to be” is evidently how Gaines interprets Scripture since He goes on to cite Jesus’ “my sheep hear my voice” and “let him who has ears to hear” as Biblical evidence that listening with that inner spiritual ear is necessary for the aspiring vision-caster to “hear what the Spirit is saying.” Disregard intentionally that whole Emmaus road narrative where Christ Himself didn’t give new prophecies to those dusty trail trodders, but instead illuminated the Scriptures to them, giving a glimpse of what the Holy Spirit Himself would soon be doing for believers.
Promoting nothing short of the contemplative, mystical heresy that is already rampant among Southern Baptists, Gaines prays, “Give me an ear for you. Let me be tuned in to you.”  (Somebody lemme know. Does the “Gaines Gets Tuned -In Revelation Show” come on before or after Benny Hinn?)
He follows this brief teaching of new age-ism by launching in to nothing short of a TBN-worthy “name it and claim it” technique that he calls “get a word from the Word.”   Promoting the snatching of a promise out of the Bible – regardless, it seems, of the actual intended target of said promise – Gaines acknowledges that this technique is “something that some people don’t like.” (Well, yeah, some people don’t like it, Steve, because “some people” actually know what Scripture teaches.)
The implicit error that Gaines, and others, unknowingly reveal when they promote contemplative, mystical spiritualism by disregarding Scripture is that they are assumptively claiming that they have fully plumbed the depths of truth to be yielded from the Word. Has Gaines exhausted the Holy Spirit’s ability to teach him all that is to be known from the Word? Is the Holy Spirit unable to guide 21st-century believers through His inspired Word?  Are we somehow, today, beyond the Holy Spirit’s expiration date on His inspiration of Scripture, much less it’s sufficiency?
Gaines’ emphasis on the presence of the Holy Spirit, or the speaking of the Holy Spirit, or the vision-casting power of the Holy Spirit is worrisome. It’s worrisome because it’s not Scriptural. The Holy Spirit never points the believer to the Holy Spirit.   The Holy Spirit always, always, ALWAYS points to Christ.
As John MacArthur said, “The Holy Spirit’s work is invisible; the effects are highly visible.” Couple that with MacArthur’s following words, and discerning caution must be used when it comes to Gaines:   “Show me a person obsessed with the Holy Spirit, and I’ll show you a person not filled with the Holy Spirit.”   While we are not capable of assessing Gaines’ own apprehension by the Holy Spirit, his eagerness to either abandon or augment Scripture through spurious methods ought to cause SBC’ers to lift a well-needed discerning eyebrow.
“Getting a word from God, guys … that’s the way to live.”  Steve Gaines
It’s just a shame that for Gaines, now leading the SBC, that “word from God” isn’t actually “THE” Word of God. Southern Baptists can likely brace themselves for more Word-free, undiscerned mysticism as Gaines seems decidedly poised, even eager, to disregard Scripture in pursuit of hearing from God in other ways.
We would do well to heed the words of Scripture devoted Puritan Thomas Watson:
The Spirit of God acts regularly; it works in and by the Word; and he that pretends to a new light, which is either above the Word, or contrary to it, abuses both himself and the Spirit; his light is borrowed from him who transforms himself into an angel of light.
But, when you’re at the top of the flailing flow chart of the seeker-sensitive SBC, nothing is out of bounds in the worship of the false idol of church and denominational growth … well … except for obedience to the sufficiency of Scripture, guided by the Holy Spirit … that’s out.  That is most definitely out of bounds. And for that … Steve Gaines seems to be just the man for the job.

BOB JONES UNIVERSITY GAY SEX ABUSE SCANDAL: GETTING WORSE

BOB JONES UNIVERSITY GAY SEX ABUSE SCANDAL: GETTING WORSE
SEE: http://www.fitsnews.com/2016/06/22/bob-jones-gay-sex-scandal-getting-worse/republished below in full unedited for informational, educational, and research purposes:

SOUTH CAROLINA CHRISTIAN SCHOOL ONCE AGAIN UNDER FIRE …

Earlier this week we reported on a child sex arrest in California that had a strong South Carolina connection.
We’re referring to the arrest of 30-year-old entertainment lawyer Benjamin Lawson Adams – a former graduate of Bob Jones Academy and a former student at Bob Jones University.
Adams is facing nine felony charges – three for “lewd or lascivious acts,” three for “oral copulation,” two for “sexual penetration” and one for “sodomy with a minor under the age of sixteen.”
His alleged victim is fourteen years old.
Adams’ story – which has been picked up by mainstream media in South Carolina – has revived a sex abuse scandal which rocked the Christian school two years ago.
Adams’ connection to BJU was first made public by BJU Grace – a group of alumni and friends of the institution hoping to hold its leaders accountable for their checkered past in dealing with sex abuse cases.
The organization is named after a Christian group that was hired, fired and then re-hired by school earlier this decade to study BJU’s handling of such cases.
This website first explored allegations against BJU two years prior to the release of the Grace report.  We were also the first outlet in the state to report on this latest chapter of the scandal.
So: Where do things currently stand?
Well, investigators in California clearly believe Adams is one of the unnamed students referenced in the 2014 document (.pdf). They also believe there are additional victims of sexual abuse connected to his time at Bob Jones.
Adams has yet to comment on the allegations against him.  He has, however, addressed the situation on his Facebook page – quoting an unnamed friend who advised him that “the past is a myth, remembered differently by all.”

An unflattering collection of images posted to an online image sharing website certainly isn’t helping Adams, though …

Nor is a YouTube video in which Adams portrays a “child predator” – one who kidnaps a teen boy he met on Grindr, a gay social networking app.
Take a look …

(Vid: Via)
Yeah … that’s pretty incriminating stuff …
Of course we maintain the real scandal here involves the failure of BJU to take appropriate action when it learned of specific allegations of sex abuse.
“If the allegations of sexual abuse were made, it is unclear if Bob Jones University, once alerted to the allegations, informed law enforcement,” California detective Aleina Smith told Fox Carolina this week. “I have not found any documentation that shows the university properly reported the abuse to law enforcement at the time they learned of it.”
Actually, the school’s former president Bob Jones III is on the record in the Grace report saying a “judgment call” was made not to report one alleged case of such activity the police.
Here are the screen caps from the report …

“Knowing what we know today, we blew it,” one BJU administrator said at the time.  “If I look back on it where I am now … he would have been arrested and dealt with and expelled for commission of a felony.”
Wow …
The only question is whether Adams is the unnamed former student referenced in this section of the report.
Randy Page, BJU’s director of public relations, said the school was prohibited from releasing specific information related any disciplinary actions involving Adams.
“Because of federal privacy laws, I am unable to comment on any disciplinary actions,” he said.
Page did say the school “reports to law enforcement any reportable incidents, including allegations of child sexual abuse” and that “BJU will fully cooperate in any police investigation.”

VALERIE JARRETT & JOE BIDEN AGREE: "ASSAULT WEAPONS & HIGH CAPACITY MAGAZINES SHOULD BE BANNED FROM CIVILIAN OWNERSHIP"

VALERIE JARRETT & JOE BIDEN AGREE: "ASSAULT WEAPONS & HIGH CAPACITY MAGAZINES SHOULD BE BANNED FROM CIVILIAN OWNERSHIP"

Let me start out by saying that incompetent, unconstitutional Communists should be banned from serving the people of the United States. With that said, such Communists like Barack Hussein Obama Soetoro Sobarkah, Joe Biden and Valerie Jarrett are of the same mind, and that is to usurp the Constitution. Specifically, they are targeting the Second Amendment. In the latest out of the White House, both Biden and Jarrett agree that so-called "assault weapons," which are nothing more than semi-automatic rifles, should be banned from civilian ownership.
Below is a clip from a White House email that was sent out in response to the White House petition.
In acknowledging a petition at WhiteHouse.org that coincides with the administration's unconstitutional agenda, Biden wrote, "The President and I agree with you. Assault weapons and high-capacity magazines should be banned from civilian ownership."
There are a number of problems with the statement from Biden.
First, where does he, Obama or even Congress have any authority to ban such weapons from the public? He was speaking of AR-type weapons, which again are not assault weapons. Still, even assault weapons are not to be banned under the Second Amendment's protection of "the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed" phrase.
Second, how will banning semi-automatic rifles stop mass shootings, which Obama has overseen more than any other president in history? Anyone can obtain a Glock pistol and 100 round drum and be even more deadly than with an AR-15 and I might add that they would be able to conceal it better. However, what we hear from the administration concerning a scenario such as that are crickets. Why? Because the emperor has no clothes. Banning weapons is not only unconstitutional, it is a failed solution that only puts the people at risk of a violent and criminal government.
However, Biden was not the only one to address the issue. Obama's mama, Valerie Jarrett, wrote a blog post that cited Biden titled, "An Update on What We're Doing to Keep Guns Out of the Wrong Hands."
In that post, she wrote, "Every single year, more than 30,000 Americans have their lives cut short by guns. Whether it is from suicide, domestic violence, a gang shootout, or an accident, too many Americans have lost loved ones, including too many precious children. Many have had to learn to live with a disability, or help a loved one do what was once effortless."
"That's why in January, President Obama outlined a number of new, commonsense steps that his Administration is taking to protect our children and communities from gun violence," she added. "Today, we are announcing important progress in implementing those steps."
These are not "commonsense steps." They are Communist steps, plain and simple.
According to Jarrett, the commonsense steps are threefold.
  • First, smart gun technology
  • Second, mental illness
  • Third, engagement with state and local leaders
Pray tell, where in the Constitution is the central government to be involved in restricting arms in any fashion, including the promotion of smart gun technology? Second, where in the Constitution is the authority given to the central government to deal with mental illness? Third, where are they to engage state and local leaders in infringing on the right to keep and bear arms, a right that is a God-given right according to our founders in the Declaration of Independence?
It's time we call these people for what they are. They are not Democrats. They are Communists and their goals are anti-American, anti-Christian and demonic at their core. Sadly, too many conservatives, so-called Christians and other "constitutionalists" are more than willing to emotionally respond to mass murders in a similar fashion. It's time true Americans tell them what they can do with their bleeding hearts and return to our biblical foundations that were given to us by our Creator.

HUMA ABEDIN, JOINED AT THE HIP

Saudis kept 2 jihad groups with ties to

Huma Abedin off US terror list

BY ROBERT SPENCER
SEE: https://www.jihadwatch.org/2016/06/saudis-kept-2-jihad-groups-with-ties-to-huma-abedin-off-us-terror-listrepublished below in full unedited for informational, educational, and research purposes:

What will a Hillary Clinton presidency look like? This Saudi clout will not end. The influence of Muslim groups that do not have our best interests at heart over our domestic and foreign policy will not end. The denial and willful ignorance about the jihad threat will not end. The Muslim migrant influx, bringing untold numbers of jihad murderers into the U.S., will not end. Many, many more Americans will be killed in jihad terror attacks.
“Saudis Kept Two Terror Groups Off U.S. List,” by Matthew Vadum, FrontPage, June 20, 2016:
The Saudi Arabian government apparently had so much clout with previous U.S. administrations that they refused to designate as terrorist organizations two terror-funding Islamofascist groups linked to Huma Abedin, now the vice-chairman of Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign.
Abedin is joined at the hip to Hillary. She is to Mrs. Clinton what Valerie Jarrett is to President Obama.
That two deadly terrorist groups avoided proper scrutiny for years is a chilling reminder of how close Mrs. Clinton’s political network is to the brutal Muslim Brotherhood, possibly the Left’s favorite Islamist operation. It also underlines the extent to which Islamist enemies of the United States have infiltrated the American political establishment. And it takes on added importance now that polls show the pathologically dishonest Alinskyite radical who wrote the communitarian manifesto It Takes A Village has a significant lead over presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump.
Sifting through archived media reports, Breitbart’s Lee Stranahan discovered it was known in the weeks following the 9/11 attacks that the International Islamic Relief Organization (IIRO) and its parent entity the Muslim World League (MWL), both of which are directly funded by Saudi authorities, were financial backers of al-Qaeda.
“The Saudis have probably done more to penetrate Al Qaeda than any other foreign intelligence service, but Al Qaeda in turn has penetrated the Saudi regime,” Newsweekreported the month after 9/11.
Although the IIRO, whose website calls the group the International Islamic Relief Organization of Saudi Arabia (IIROSA), and MWL “have been used by bin Laden to finance his operations,” they were “left off the list of groups sanctioned by the United States last week, U.S. officials hinted … in order to avoid embarrassing the Saudi government.”
The League acknowledges on its website that it is “engaged in propagating the religion of Islam” and “elucidating its principles and tenets.” It also engages in strategic lying, known in the Islamic world as taqiyya. The League “is well known for rejecting all acts of violence and promoting dialogue with the people of other cultures,” its website claims, adding that it does “not intend to undermine, dominate or practice hegemony over anyone else.”
It claims on the site that it has “external centers,” “external offices,” and “Islamic centers” in Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bangladesh, Belgium, Bosnia Herzegovina, Brazil, Burundi, Canada, Congo, Denmark, Egypt, France, Hungary, Indonesia, Italy, Jordan, Malaysia, Mozambique, Netherlands, Nigeria, Pakistan, Russia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sudan, Sweden, United Kingdom, and other countries.
IIRO describes itself as “a charity organization emanating from the Muslim World League.”
Its annual report from 2011/2012 indicates that “thousands of mosques have been built with an average of one mosque a day” and that it has “1,222 staff” worldwide. Under its “Holy Qur’an and Da’wa Program” it has “8,044 male and female students memorizing Qur’an and learning Islamic studies in 306 centres and Qur’an circles.” IIRO has “304 Qur’an teachers and supervisors” in “these centres in 29 countries around the world” and sponsors “338 Islamic preachers” in those 29 countries.
Clinton protégé and campaign vice-chairman Huma Abedin, her parents, and her siblings all have intimate ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. The Muslim World League has reportedly taken in more than $1.3 billion since 1962 from the Saudi government to promote Wahhabism. The League, warns Andrew C. McCarthy, is the Brotherhood’s “principal vehicle for the international propagation of Islamic supremacist ideology.”
Abedin, who is married to disgraced former U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.), has never publicly explained her disturbing connections to the people who killed 3,000 Americans on 9/11 or why, despite those ties, she ought to be trusted with state secrets. And when courageous politicians like former Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) have tried to sound the alarm about who Abedin really is, they have been relentlessly mocked by the media and politicians from both parties. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) famously suffered from an acute outbreak of faux chivalry on the Senate floor when congressional colleagues dared to ask legitimate questions about Abedin’s loyalty to this country.
Few recall that when Bill Clinton was president in 1996, the CIA believed the International Islamic Relief Organization helped to underwrite six terrorist training facilities in Afghanistan. Harper’s reported in 2004 that the former head of IIRO’s office in the Philippines, who happened to be Obama bin Laden’s brother-in-law, “had been linked to plots to ‘target the pope and U.S. airlines.’”
The year 1996 was also eventful for Abedin. That year the young Michigan-born woman returned to the U.S. after years of living with her jihadist parents and soaking up the militant Islamic culture of Saudi Arabia. She promptly began working for then-first lady Hillary as an intern in the White House. At the same time Abedin was a member of the executive board of the George Washington University chapter of the Muslims Students Association, which was created by the MWL in the 1960s. In 1996 Abedin also began working as assistant editor at the Journal of Muslim Minority Affairs, an Islamist publication of the Institute of Muslim Minority Affairs (IMMA).
The Institute was founded in 1979 by the entrepreneurial Islamist Abdullah Omar Naseef who at the time was vice president of the prestigious King Abdulaziz University in Saudi Arabia. Naseef, who became MWL secretary-general in 1983, hired the late Dr. Zyed Abedin, Huma’s father, as managing editor of the Journal, and the Abedins relocated to the repressive Saudi kingdom. Huma’s mother is the publication’s editor-in-chief and her brother and sister also work there as editors.
The Harper’s article from 12 years ago added that the U.S. intelligence community believed MWL employees took part in the bombing of two U.S. embassies in Africa in 1998. Even though both MWL and IIRO funded al-Qaeda, Newsweek reported in October 2001, the Bush administration “left the two organizations off the list of designated terrorist groups in order to spare the Saudi government from embarrassment.” It’s not clear why the Clinton administration suppressed the truth about the two organizations.
Stranahan is optimistic that despite the frantic lies of the Left, the facts about Hillary and Huma will receive proper attention in the current election cycle.
“Defenders of Clinton and Abedin have attempted to spin concerns about Abedin’s disturbing connections as a crazed right-wing conspiracy theory, but the facts are coming out, and with America focused on the presidential race and terrorism, it is just a matter of time before the truth comes out.”
Meanwhile, even as the nation grieves for the 49 innocent Americans gunned down June 12 by Muslim terrorist Omar Mateen at a gay club in Orlando, Fla., members of the media seem blissfully unaware that for five years Hillary Clinton had a real live jihad-loving terrorist on the payroll at her family foundation.
Gehad el-Haddad, an Islamic terrorist leader who jumped straight from his job at the terrorist-friendly international cash-for-favors clearinghouse known as the Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation to a post with Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood, received a life sentence back home last year for seditious Islamist activities.
The professional propagandist may have learned about forcing Sharia law on Egyptians while he was “city director,” a senior communications post, at the Clintons’ charity from August 2007 to August 2012. (Note: Gehad is the Egyptian version of the Arabic word jihad.) Haddad was the lead English-language spokesman for the Muslim Brotherhood and a frequent apologist for the since-ousted President Mohamed Morsi’s violent crackdowns on civil liberties. He put his spin doctoring skills to use downplaying Brotherhood supporters’ attacks on women and children.
Hillary Clinton, of course, headed the U.S. Department of State during the Egyptian Revolution of 2011 that ousted longtime U.S. ally and anti-Islamist Hosni Mubarak and cleared the way for Morsi, an Obama ally.
It beggars belief that Clinton didn’t know about Haddad’s employment with the Brotherhood. A mere month after Haddad quit his Clinton Foundation job for full-time employment with the Brotherhood in 2012, Morsi received an invitation to deliver a major address at the Clinton Global Initiative, a high-profile project of the foundation.
These things are all just incredible coincidences, Clinton’s defenders will insist.
