The Obama administration has made it a priority to have the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) completed by the end of the year. The TPP is the largest trade agreement negotiated since the World Trade Organization (WTO). It covers 12 countries so far and includes provisions that reach beyond issues of trade. The full contents of the TPP are unknown because it has been negotiated with unprecedented secrecy; however, it is clear from what has been revealed that the TPP gives transnational corporations the power to alter our laws down to the local level to enhance and protect their profits.
To pass the TPP, Obama is seeking Fast Track Trade Promotion Authority from Congress, which would give the president the ability to negotiate and sign the agreement before it is presented to Congress for a limited debate and an up-or-down vote without amendments. Fast Track, which has been used to pass other undesirable trade deals like the WTO and NAFTA, would prohibit a transparent and democratic process. Without Fast Track, it would be more difficult to pass the TPP.

Since the Bush administration, leaders of these 12 countries have mostly met in secret to discuss and on Thursday another round of talks will take place. If the TPP deal is completed it could have alarming effects on people's access to medicine, online freedoms and financial regulations. The TPP is often referred to by critics as "NAFTA on steroids," and would establishing a free-trade zone that would stretch from Vietnam to Chile, encompass 800 million people -- about a third of world trade and nearly 40 percent of the global economy. While the text of the treaty has been largely negotiated behind closed doors and until June, kept secret from Congress, more than 600 corporate advisors reportedly have access to the measure, including employees of Halliburton, and Monsanto. "This is not mainly about trade," says Lori Wallach, director of Public Citizen's Global Trade Watch. "It is a corporate trojan horse. The agreement has 29 chapters, and only five of them have to do with trade. The other 24 chapters either handcuff our domestic governments -- limiting food safety, environmental standards, financial regulation, energy and climate policy -- or establishing new powers for corporations."

Parents' outrage after teachers cut references to Jesus Christ out of school choir's rendition of 'Silent Night'
(Gadailynews) Parents are in one New York school district are furious after teachers removed references to Jesus Christ from 'Silent Night' - a song about the birth of the Jesus Christ.
The head-scratching decision by officials at Ralph J. Osgood Intermediate School on Long Island, New York, changed the 200-year-old Christmas carol to cut out the lines 'round yon virgin, mother and child,' 'Christ the Savior is born' and 'holy infant.'
The resulting version of the song is hacked apart and nearly unrecognizable to anyone who knows the original version.
Kings Park Central School District Board of Education issued an apology Thursday after a video surfaced of the revised 'Silent Night.'
'This action was not approved by the Board of Education or district administration, nor is it their role to approve the songs chosen for our concerts,' the board told NBC New York in a statement.
The lyrics for the song performed by the song go: 'Silent night, Holy night/All is calm, all is bright/
'Glory streams from heaven afar/Heavenly, hosts sings Hallelujah/
'Sleep in heavenly peace/Sleep in heavenly peace.'
Every reference to Jesus Christ has been scrubbed from the performance.
'I'm not too happy with that, it's kind of insulting,' parent Robert Dowd told WCBS-AM.
'Silent Night,' originally written in German 'Stille Nacht,' was composed by Joseph Mohr and first performed in 1818 in Oberndorf bei Salzburg, Austria.
It was first translated to English in 1859 and was famously sung together in World War I by German, French and English troops during the Christmas Truce of 1914.
