On January 11, 2015, Hartley represented the United States at a unity march in Paris in the wake of the Charlie Hebdo shooting.
On June 2015, following revelations that the U.S. had spied on French political leaders, Élisabeth Guigou, president of the Foreign Affairs committee in the National Assembly, invited Jane Hartley to appear before members. However, the ambassador refused to meet the committee and respond to questions. She has been a member of the Council on Foreign Relations for more than 10 years.
