GOP front runner Donald Trump has hit out at President Obama’s gun control move, promising supporters “They are not going to take your guns away” on his watch.
In television appearances and at a rally in New Hampshire, Trump responded to Obama’s tearful announcement regarding executive action on gun legislation by assuring supporters that he would make sure “They are not going to screw around with the Second Amendment.” “It is not going to happen. That is the way it is.” Trump told supporters Tuesday evening. Trump referred to the executive orders as “no good” and “no fair,” blasting the President for sidestepping Congress on the issue. “Wouldn’t it be nice to actually get Congress together and do it the old fashioned way?” Trump stated. In a backstage interview with The Boston Herald, Trump reiterated the point, noting “He shouldn’t be doing it by executive order.” “I mean, you should be getting Congress together and there’s supposed to be agreement. All they’re doing is step-by-step, they’re hurting the Second Amendment, and that’s all they’re doing.” Trump urged.
“You have to go out and you have to cajole and deal with Congress … and not just sign something you feel like signing. He has to be able to make deals and get the Republicans and Democrats together and make deals.” the self made billionaire added. Trump also said that he felt Obama’s actions might backfire and bring more supporters to his own campaign. “I think it might,” said Trump. “We have such tremendous support, but I think something like that probably might …” Obama said during his speech Tuesday that he “can’t wait” for Congress to act. “Until we have a Congress that’s in line with the majority of Americans there are actions within my legal authority that we can take to help reduce gun violence and save more lives,” he said. “Actions that protect our rights and our kids.” In a further appearance on Fox and Friends Wednesday Morning, Trump commented on the tears shed by Obama as he spoke of the victims of the Newtown shooting during the executive announcement. “I actually think he was sincere,” Trump said, admitting that “I’ll probably go down about 5 points in the polls by saying that.” “It’s a thing that he feels – I think he’s incorrect about it, they’re just taking chunks and chunks out of the Second Amendment, but I think he probably means well,” Trump added.
