Rubio was born in Miami, Florida, the second son and third child of Mario Rubio Reina and Oriales (née Garcia) Rubio. His parents were Cubans who immigrated to the United States in 1956, prior to the rise of Fidel Castro in January 1959. His mother made at least four trips back after Castro’s victory, including for a month in 1961. Neither of his parents was a citizen at the time of Rubio’s birth, but ultimately his parents applied for U.S. citizenship and were naturalized in 1975.
In an interview in 2012, Rubio said: "I'm a Roman Catholic. I'm theologically in line with the Roman Catholic Church. I believe in the authority of the church, but I also have tremendous respect for my brothers and sisters in other Christian faiths. I recognize, as the Catholic Church does, that there are excellent teachings of the Word throughout other denominations. The elements of salvation are found in these churches as well."
As well as contributing to private initiatives, Singer has also actively sought to persuade other Republicans to support gay marriage. He has joined other Wall Street executives in support of LGBT equality and stated that same-sex marriage promotes “family stability” and that in a time when “the institution of marriage in America has utterly collapsed,” the fact that gay couples want to marry “is kind of a lovely thing and a cool thing and a wonderful thing.”.
Singer, whose son married his partner in Massachusetts, has also financially supported the legalization of gay marriage in New York, and Maryland. In 2011, this advocacy included, supporting legislation allowing same-sex marriage in the state of New York along with other GOP donors.
In 2012, Singer provided $1 million to start a Political Action Committee named American Unity PAC. According to the New York Times, the PAC's "sole mission will be to encourage Republican candidates to support same-sex marriage, in part by helping them to feel financially shielded from any blow back from well-funded groups that oppose it." In 2014, Singer urged Republicans to pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act. This bill requires workplace protections to extend out to the LGBT community.

Paul Singer Backs Marco Rubio
Published on Oct 31, 2015
Marco Rubio's highly touted debate performance on Wednesday has already yielded a significant tangible benefit: The Republican presidential candidate has snagged the support of mega-donor Paul Singer, in a move that will be widely seen in the political world as a blow to struggling rival Jeb Bush. One of the party's most prolific and hard-to-please donors, Singer gave more than $16 million to candidates and political committees in the last four years, according to records on file with the Federal Election Commission. Fiscally conservative and socially moderate, the hedge-fund manager has donated to conservative candidates and causes, such as pro-Israel groups, former Ambassador John Bolton, and the Tea Party Patriots, but he has steered many of his contributions to his own super political action committee, American Unity, which supports Republicans who back gay rights. He gave $1 million to Restore Our Future, the super-PAC supporting Mitt Romney's 2012 presidential campaign, and he supported former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani's 2008 White House bid.
Paul Singer, Influential GOP Billionaire, Throws Support To Rubio
Published on Oct 31, 2015
Oct 30 (Reuters) - One of the wealthiest and most influential Republican donors is throwing his support behind the presidential campaign of U.S. Senator Marco Rubio of Florida, the New York Times reported on Friday.
Billionaire New York investor Paul Singer sent a letter to dozens of other donors on Friday declaring his support for Rubio in a major blow to the struggling campaign of former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, the newspaper said. They are among the candidates seeking the 2016 Republican presidential nomination.
Asked by reporters in Iowa about Singer's support, Rubio said: "When people donate to us, they buy into our agenda, and I'm glad that he has and it will help us with resources." Rubio added: "Resources alone are not enough ... but we're grateful to have his help, obviously."
Rubio, Bush, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and several other Republican candidates had eagerly sought Singer's support, the Times said.In the letter, Singer described Rubio as the only candidate who can "navigate this complex primary process, and still be in a position to defeat" Hillary Clinton, the front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination in the November 2016 general election.
Singer gave more money to Republican candidates and causes last year than any donor in the country, the Times said, citing the Center for Responsive Politics.
He is courted by Republicans both for his willingness to give and for his network of fellow conservative donors, the newspaper reported.
The Times did not say how much Singer intended to donate to Rubio, who is coming off a strong debate performance on Wednesday night in Colorado.
Rubio is third behind businessman Donald Trump and retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson in a Real Clear Politics average of national opinion polls for the Republican race.
Bush, who is in fifth place in the polling and recently downsized his campaign staff, gave what is widely viewed as a lackluster performance in the debate.

Romney's Billionaire Vulture Paul Singer, the GOP's Baddie Sugar Daddie
The untold story of the sources of the loot controlled by Paul "The Vulture" Singer and why he needs to buy the White House
by Greg Palast for TruthOut/Buzzflash - update
Greg Palast has been investigating Singer and other finance vultures for BBC Television's Newsnight. His new book is Vultures' Picnic: In Pursuit of Petroleum Pigs, Power Pirates and High-Finance Carnivores.
It's out of the closet ---- or, more accurately, out of the coven. The list of the billionaires who have given at least $1 million to Restore Our Future, the pro-Romney Super PAC, is headed by Paul Singer. Singer and his hedge fund crew at Elliott Associates, with their donations to the Republican National Committee and other "independent" groups like the Swift Boat campaign, makes it likely that Singer is now the top funder for the GOP.
For BBC-TV, I've been tracking Singer for five years. And this is the key fact you need to know about the man whose cash would pick our President: Paul Singer likes to breakfast on decayed carcasses.
The carrion king is known as Singer The Vulture. I didn't give him the moniker. The name Vulture was tagged on him and his speculator colleagues by the Prime Minister of Britain and the World Bank. Recently, former Deputy Secretary-General of the UN Winston Tubman suggested I ask Singer or his business associates, "Do you know you're causing babies to die?"
What does this guy do—put poison in kiddies' milk? Worse: he takes away the milk.

Three African immigrants who brutally raped a 14-year-old girl to the point where she wanted to kill herself were given extremely light sentences by a court in Norway, with one receiving community service and avoiding prison altogether.
The incident happened on the night of July 30 when the three men accosted the girl on a commuter train before also molesting her in a farm house and at an apartment in Oslo.
During her ordeal, the girl was raped both orally and anally before being forced to take drugs.According to reports, the abuse, which lasted for hours, was so horrific that at one point the girl expressed a desire to take her own life to end the suffering.
The girl suffered “severe mental damage” and PTSD as a result of the incident, missed a year of school and is still struggling to deal with what happened.
The three men, 18-year-old Bile Mohamed Elmi, 21-year-old Abdirizak Nur Ali and 21-year-old Mohamed Abdirisak Mohamed, were initially charged with gang rape, which carries a maximum sentence of 21 years.
However, prosecutor Cecilie Schloss Møller insisted there wasn’t enough evidence and the three men were convicted of sexual contact with a child under 16 years of age, which carries a lighter sentence.
As a result, one of the men, Bile Mohamed Elmi received just 344 hours community service “for two counts of sexual intercourse with the girl in a particularly offensive manner.” Mohamed Abdirisak Mohamed received 17 months imprisonment, while Abdirizak Nur Ali received just 10 months imprisonment.
In Norway, almost half of all rapes committed in Osloin 2011 were carried out by individuals of African, Middle Eastern or Asian origin, despite the fact that Muslim immigrants only represent 1.5-2 per cent of the population.
In addition, 100 per cent of aggravated rapes involving physical violence were committed by individuals of African, Middle Eastern or Asian origin.
Leftist political leadersresponded to the figuresby absolving “traumatized asylum seekers” of blame and instead pointed fingers at police for encouraging “xenophobia and prejudice” merely for reporting the statistics.
The wave of migrants flooding into Europe has stoked fresh concerns about an increase in rape cases. German police have been accused ofcovering up the scandal in order to not legitimize critics of mass immigration.
Meanwhile in Finland, cops have been ordered by the country’s national police board not to publicly identify migrants as criminal suspects over concerns that doing so would encourage a ‘racist’ backlash against the wave of asylum seekers entering Scandinavia.

Local authorities in the German town of Bergheim are set to build 60 brand new houses at a cost of around €12 million euros to house incoming migrants even as Germans themselves are being evicted from their gomes to make way for asylum seekers.
The town, which has a population of 59,000, is situated about 20 km west of Cologne.
A report citing the German broadcaster Radio Erft reveals that the houses will be large enough to accommodate a total of 600 asylum seekers and that land in the urban areas of Kenten, Oberaußem-Fortuna and Quad-Ichendor has already been set aside for the project.
The project is necessary because the country is running out of suitable facilities to house the migrants, with available gymnasiums, temporary camps and disused office facilities now at a premium. 10,000 migrants cross the Austrian border into Germany every single day.
The choice of Bergheim as a location for the migrants also presents a clear security risk given that extremist Salafist preachers who already live in the town have openly declared their intentionto recruit new jihadists from the ranks of arriving “refugees”.
While migrants are being provided new houses free of charge, German citizens are being evicted from their homes to offset the influx of asylum seekers.
As the London Telegraph reports, Germans living in apartments owned by local municipalities are being told to leave because the flats are needed to house migrants, even though the current occupants are paying rent.
With the migrant crisis showing no signs of abating, talks this past weekend between German Chancellor Angela Merkel and party leaders only served to bring more discord.
Meanwhile, the German village of Sumte – population 102 – faces a tidal wave of 750 migrants – a number so unbelievable that when the district government first informed Sumte’s Mayor Christian Fabe of the plan, he initially considered it to be a hoax.
A New York Times report on the story wasted no time in portraying opponents of the scheme as “Nazis” and “extremists”.
The world’s richest man, Bill Gates, has said that the private sector is too selfish and inefficient to produce effective energy alternatives to fossil fuels.
While announcing his plan to spend $2 billion of his own wealth on green energy during an interview with The Atlantic, the Microsoft founder called on fellow billionaires to help make the US fossil-free by 2050 with similar philanthropy.
There’s no fortune to be made. Even if you have a new energy source that costs the same as today’s and emits no CO2, it will be uncertain compared with what’s tried-and-true and already operating at unbelievable scale and has gotten through all the regulatory problems.
Without a substantial carbon tax, there’s no incentive for innovators or plant buyers to switch.
Since World War II, US-government R&D has defined the state of the art in almost every area. The private sector is in general inept.
The climate problem has to be solved in the rich countries. China and the US and Europe have to solve CO2 emissions, and when they do, hopefully they’ll make it cheap enough for everyone else.
