Pope seeks Holy Year pardon for women who have abortions
Published on Sep 1, 2015
The head of the Catholic Church has called on all priests to pardon women who have abortions and the doctors who perform them. However, this will be relevant only during the coming Holy Year, as earlier announced by the Pope.
“I have decided, notwithstanding anything to the contrary, to concede to all priests for the Jubilee Year the discretion to absolve of the sin of abortion those who have procured it and who, with contrite heart, seek forgiveness for it,” the Pope said in a letter addressed to Archbishop Rino Fisichella, president of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization on Tuesday.

Pope Francis said the moral burden of women who terminated pregnancies should be alleviated.

“I think in particular of all the women who have resorted to abortion. I am well aware of the pressure that has led them to this decision. I know that it is an existential and moral ordeal,” he said.

“I have met so many women who bear in their heart the scar of this agonizing and painful decision,” he added.

The Pope emphasized that abortion is still a grievous sin, which nevertheless can be pardoned.

“What has happened is profoundly unjust; yet only understanding the truth of it can enable one not to lose hope. The forgiveness of God cannot be denied to one who has repented, especially when that person approaches the Sacrament of Confession with a sincere heart in order to obtain reconciliation with the Father,” he said.

From his point of view, the loss of “sensitivity to welcome new life” is one of the most serious problems of the modern world.
The change would apply only during the Holy Year for now, said deputy Vatican spokesman Father Ciro Benedettini. He added only a bishop, missionary or the chief confessor of a diocese can formally absolve women from abortions.

The Year of Jubilee is a special year of remission of sins, which is normally celebrated every 25 years. The next scheduled Holy Year will be celebrated in 2025. The Pope, however, can decree an extraordinary Holy Year, which Francis has declared for next year.

Francis, 78, is the first Latin American Pope. He is known as a reformist seeking to make the Catholic Church more modern and open. In June, he said in some cases divorce can be a moral necessity, despite the fact that dissolution of marriage is prohibited by the Catholic Church.

    Veneration[edit]

Junípero Serra was beatified by Pope John Paul II on September 25, 1988, this being the next-to-last step towards canonization, or recognition of sainthood, in the Catholic Church. The pope spoke before a crowd of 20,000 in a beatification ceremony for six; according to the pope's address in English, "He sowed the seeds of Christian faith amid the momentous changes wrought by the arrival of European settlers in the New World. It was a field of missionary endeavor that required patience, perseverance, and humility, as well as vision and courage."
During Serra's beatification, questions were raised about how Indians were treated while Serra was in charge. The question of Franciscan treatment of Indians first arose in 1783. The famous historian of missions Herbert Eugene Bolton gave evidence favorable to the case in 1948, and the testimony of five other historians was solicited in 1986.
On January 15, 2015, Pope Francis announced that in September, he hopes to canonize the 18th-century Spanish Franciscan as a part of his first visit to the United States. He will be the first native saint of the Balearic Islands. He will be canonized on 23 September 2015 in Washington D.C. by Pope Francis.
Serra's feast day is celebrated on July 1 and he is considered to be the patron of vocations.
The Mission in Carmel, California containing Serra's remains has continued as a place of public veneration. The burial location of Serra is southeast of the altar and is marked with an inscription in the floor of the sanctuary. Other relics are remnants of the wood from Serra's coffin on display next to the sanctuary, and personal items belonging to Serra on display in the mission museums. A bronze and marble sarcophagus depicting Serra's life was completed in 1924 by Catalan sculptor Joseph A. Mora. Serra's remains have not been transferred to the sarcophagus.
A statue of Friar Junípero Serra is one of two statues representing the state of California in the National Statuary Hall Collection in the United States Capitol. The statue, sculpted by Ettore Cadorin, depicts Serra holding a cross and looking skyward. In February 2015, State Senator Ricardo Lara introduced a bill in the California legislature to remove the Serra statue and replace it with one of astronaut Sally Ride. In May 2015, some California Catholics were organizing to keep Serra's statue in place. California Governor Jerry Brown joined in support of retaining the statue during a July 2015 visit to the Vatican.

Our Lord's Victory Cry, "It is Finished!"
BY MIKE GENDRON OF PROCLAIMING THE GOSPEL

republished below in full unedited for informational, educational, and research purposes:

"The night before the Lord Jesus Christ went to the cross He prayed to His Father that He had "finished the work you have given me to do" (John 17:4). When we consider all that He had to do to save sinners, His victory cry, "It is finished," speaks volumes. Righteousness had to be perfected, divine justice had to be satisfied, blood had to be shed, redemption had to be paid, sins had to be forgiven, reconciliation had to be accomplished, death had to be conquered, salvation had to be secured, and heaven had to be opened. All this was perfectly accomplished so that eternal life could be offered as a free gift of God's grace to those who trust the all-sufficient Savior.

Only when sinners realize their hopeless and helpless condition can they begin to understand the glorious promises revealed in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Everything that man could never do was completely accomplished by our Lord Jesus Christ. His mission to seek and to save the lost culminated on the cross. The work of salvation was finished. The eternal sin debt was paid in full. Since it was an eternal debt, it was impossible for man to pay. But God forgave us "all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross" (Col. 2:13-14).

Jesus "appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself" (Hebrews 9:26). Yet Catholicism rejects the Word of God by teaching a Catholic must do "something more to make amends for the sin: he must 'make satisfaction for' or 'expiate' his sins. This satisfaction is called 'penance'" (CCC, par. 1459). What a terrible deception this is for faithful Roman Catholics who look to their church, rather than the Bible, for truth! By adding to the perfect and sufficient work of Christ they have nullified God's grace which is the only means by which God saves sinners (Rom. 11:6). The very purpose Christ became our kinsman redeemer and suffered an excruciating death was to expiate sin, once and for all, by His perfect sacrifice.
Roman Catholicism also rejects another finished work of Christ: the purification of sins. God's Word declares "when He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high" (Heb. 1:3). Those who trust Christ alone are purified from all sin, by His blood (1 John 1:7). Catholicism denies the efficacy of Christ's blood and instead offers a place called "purgatory." It states: "every sin, even venial, entails an unhealthy attachment to creatures, which must be purified either here on earth, or after death in the state called Purgatory" (CCC, par..1472). How can a religion which names the name of Christ reject His precious blood for a fictitious place that robs Him of His glory?
After finishing His all-sufficient work on the cross, Jesus now offers His righteousness as a gift to all who believe (Rom. 5:17). The only way to receive the gift is by faith in Christ alone. Those who are blinded by religious deception must do what the Apostle Paul did. He exchanged his religion for a relationship with Christ. He wrote: "I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith" (Phil 3:8-9).
